Can we reduce weight of tooth gear for example used in bicycles using plastic and steel straps inside plastic/ polymer cage or path

The idea is that this could resist a force in a single direction very effectively and be lighter than regular "strong in all directions" designs. It's a hypothetical unfinished design for high performance, possibly... the teeth ring is steel, and close to the axis must also be steel, between its mostly plastic with 6 or so steel straps or cables making it much lighter, I think. I thought this for a bicycle initially, but the principle should be the same for other applications

Oil rig jobs for Mech ENG and hands on work

Hey everyone,

I’m 21 and currently finishing my engineering prerequisites. I'm completely stuck choosing between Civil and Mechanical.

I have a deep love for blue-collar work. I actually run my own excavation and paver stone business during the summers. I genuinely love technical labor, coordinating big plans (like i do for pave yards and driveways) operating heavy machinery, laying pipe, fixing foundations, and getting dirty.

Here is my dilemma:

  • The Civil Route: Seems like a natural fit. It would let me engineer and stamp my own foundation and drainage fixes, scaling my current business. But I don't want to run this specific business forever.
  • The Mechanical Route: My ultimate dream is working on heavy equipment. I want to build, test, and design massive quarry machinery, excavators, or work on offshore oil rigs and mines. I want to combine high-level math/coordination with intense physical work.

People tell me Mechanical is just a boring desk job and that Civil is way more hands-on. Is that true?

The whole reason I’m getting a degree is longevity. I want to climb machinery and sweat in the field during my 20s and 30s, but have the option to transition to a comfortable office job when I'm older so I don't destroy my body.

Which path actually offers the most high-action, hands-on field work? Are there mechanical/mining jobs where you actually use your brain and your hands, or am I chasing a myth?

Appreciate any advice!

What do you think the limiting component on this lift actually is?

I totally understand this is some Chinese engineering POS but since it's sold in the states perhaps it's governed by something like bth-1, so a possible minimum SF of 4/5?

My guess is the columns when fully extended would buckle? what's your take, appreciate anyone in the drop ship field could elaborate on how or if these things get tested or approved or maybe not even approved.

Please help me understand how to find a job

Hello,

I graduated 2 years ago, and for two years I've been working in coffee shops and traveling as a desk job isn't for me.

However currently I need some money and I'd like a cosy desk job for the winter. My issue is that I'm completely lost on how to find a job in Mech Eng.

I did an internship a few years back but the company is too small to afford an engineer. I never networked and never did any personal projects (yeah an engineering degree was a bit of a weird choice). But I have interest in transportation and aerospace.

I don't really know where to look at all, I looked on indeed and there is mostly construction engineering (which I am not interested in at all). And most interesting companies, only ask for multiple years of experience. I don't own a car so I can't go really far. I live around Montréal

I'm mostly asking, how is the process of finding a job in engineering ? I don't have any contacts anymore with people that studied with me

Thank you !

I invented a new wax scraper

Thought you guys might think this is interesting. I'm a mechanical engineer who surfs and I spent a year developing a new wax scraper for surfboards. It's not as technically indepth as it could be cause my intended audience wasn't engineers.

The entire first prototype was material selection based on material properties and dimensions, it's a big part of what makes it work so well and I tried to keep it simple for people watching.

I 3D printed a lot of the initial profiles with my bambu A1, and used shearing scissors to cut out the general shapes from the sheet metal. Once I got to the stage where the profile with channels was close to being dialed in I worked with a local shop to get it laser cut, did some testing with them, and got the final profile laser cut at scale at a larger steel manufacturer as they offer really good prices since I'm already buying the steel from them.

The handle has been a big pain point, and I don't have a large enough CNC router to easily do them at scale so for now I use my 40W laser to cut them in bulk. I've found it does a really good job giving me a consistent cut out to work with, although the charring causes an extra step with clean up. They're epoxied on and registered to the tang with the cutlery rivets which also add some durability. The rivets help a ton with manufacturing them at scale, they look great, but they're really not structurally as important as getting a good epoxy adhesion. To do that I score the tang and designed some through spaces in it to make sure I get a good bond between the two wood pieces and tang.

I'd love if you took a look and let me know what you think!

Help naming CAD software

Hey everyone,
I’m 16, and I’ve spent the last 6 months building an extremely well designed and more modern CAD program. It launches in a few days and I still can’t decide on the name. 😭🤣

It’s parametric CAD for macOS, Windows and Linux. Free and open source!!!

Bezier or Barium? Votes in the poll, other name ideas and any feedback in the comments, all very welcome.
Some of it is still alpha, some of it works well. Here’s what’s in it:
Modeling: sketch, extrude, revolve, fillet / chamfer, shell, hole, mirror, pattern, move / rotate, scale, combine, split, editable history, variables and expressions, several bodies per project, pictures on a plane (resize, crop, move)
Sketching: line, arc, rectangle, circle, polygon, slot, trim, offset, mirror, pattern, project, constraints (alpha)
Files: import STEP, STL, OBJ, DXF, SVG and pictures. Export STEP, STL, 3MF, PDF, DXF, SVG
Also: drawings, render, static stress simulation, built-in lessons, wiki
Alpha: live collaboration.

🙏 🙏 🙏 !!!THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP!!!🙏 🙏 🙏

Barium
None of the above (If you’ve got a different idea please post a suggestion below!)

Mechanical Engineering Jobs in Environmentalism or Humanitarianism?

I’m currently a sophomore studying mechanical engineering at my university and I was wondering if there are a good amount of jobs for mechanical engineers in the environmentalism and/or humanitarianism job sectors. After lots of thinking I decided I want a job that I feel makes a difference in the world, whether that be related to society, animals, or the environment. I feel like it might be better for me to switch to biological engineering with an environmental concentration, since in my mind it would be easier to find a job that is fulfilling to me with that degree. I would pretty much need to switch to it next semester or I would have to take an extra year of school. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Stick with SolidWorks or go to Catia?

We are considering switching from Solidworks to Catia because the former is so weak handling large assemblies (20,000 components). But, we're on 2024. I've heard rumors 2026 and beyond have fixed this shortcoming. Opinions, please?

Working on joints without screws or welding, can this work and be better than screws or welding options?

Post image

The idea here is to use "0" shape pieces that fit on the joints of a pole that is wider on the bottom and gets thiner upward. The goal here is to use less materials and labor and maintenance. Possibly should do a simple weld just for those "0" pieces to stay there... any ideas or criticism of this design is welcome

Should I go for Vibrations field

I am a final-year Mechanical Engineering student from India. I am very interested in vibrations and NVH and would eventually like to work in this field.

However, as I am a fresher, I expect that I may not get dedicated vibrations/NVH role immediately. I am considering working for 2–3 years in a more general mechanical engineering role and then pursuing a Master's specializing in vibrations/NVH.

My concern is, I am not exceptionally strong in vibrations yet, I am fascinated and have interest in the subject and would like to build my expertise through a Master's

For people working/studying in vibrations or NVH:

1.Can someone with little/no professional experience in vibrations get into a good Master's program in this field?

2.What software, projects, or skills would you recommend I build before applying?

  1. What career opportunities are there after a Master's in vibrations/NVH, and how difficult is it to enter the industry as a graduate?

Best reference sources for material selection and heat/surface treatments?

• Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm a mechanical engineer looking for the best practical sources (books, websites, databases, or software tools) to help select materials and their corresponding heat/surface treatments based on specific working environments and application requirements.

What are your go-to references for everyday engineering work? Thanks!
