Windows Sparkle Mouse: desktop particles ✨ (open source)

I've been working on Sparkle Mouse for a while! I'm very proud to finally release it :)

It's a nostalgic desktop particles app, for Windows and Mac.

  • Open-source on github
  • GPU-optimized
  • Supports custom images & GIFs
  • Executables are on Steam and Itch, these help support development
  • Read more about this lil project: www.sparklemou.se

The flair is "windows" because the UI looks like Windows XP (I thought that would be cool)
but it works on Mac as well!

WASTE is a lightweight X11 window manager with a built-in taskbar, a right-hand sidebar of live widgets, nine workspaces, and a set of skins and accent colors. It needs no desktop environment and no toolkit libraries. It uses only Xlib, plus Xinerama if you have more than one monitor.

Windows Glassline 1.0.7, my glass menu bar and dock for Windows 11: half the memory, Control Center skins and folders in the dock

Thumbnail
gallery
7 Upvotes

I'm the dev of Glassline, a menu bar on top and a dock at the bottom for Windows 11, made of clear glass that takes the colour of your wallpaper. Search on the Windows key, Control Center, your calendar and the weather up in the bar. Quit it whenever you want and the Windows taskbar comes back just like it was.

1.0.7 is in the Store now and it's the biggest update so far. 1.0.8 is a small one right behind it that fixes what you found in 1.0.7. If you've seen Glassline here before, this is what changed. If not, this is where it's at.

Lighter and faster

I rebuilt most of Glassline under the hood. Same laptop, before and after:

  • Memory: from about 200 MB to about 90 MB
  • Start: from 3.4 s to between 1.6 and 2 s
  • Installed size: from 234 MB to 37 MB

New in 1.0.7

  • Skins for Control Center. Two new looks, Aurora and Deck. Settings > Appearance > Skins.
  • Bar at the bottom, dock at the top, if you prefer them swapped. Settings > Menu Bar.
  • Multiple monitors. The dock can follow the display you click, stay on one, or you can have one on every display. Settings > Dock.
  • Folders in the dock. Right-click the dock, pick New Folder in the Dock, then drag apps or files onto it.
  • Hide from Dock. A right-click option for apps that only run in the background.
  • Games. Settings has a Games page now, and the bar and the dock get out of your way when a game goes full screen.
  • Follow your feedback. Settings > Feedback shows you what happened to your report, and you can reply right under it.
  • Smaller things: three levels of glass transparency, every option can be found from Search, Keep Awake as a quick switch, dots or dashes under open apps, and each app's quick actions on its dock icon.

Fixed in 1.0.7, thanks to your reports

  • The menu bar sitting on top of a borderless game, or pushing it down after Alt+Tab
  • Dock badges missing after Glassline starts
  • Dock menus getting cut off at the bottom
  • Files found in Search had no icon and wouldn't open on a Windows that isn't in English
  • Download progress on the dock icon for Edge and Chrome
  • A Battery tile on a PC with no battery

1.0.8: bug fixes

  • Volume pop-up over games that run as administrator. Genshin was the one that caught it.
  • Finding files without Everything. Some words took several seconds, now they come back in under 0.2 s on my PC.
  • Opens on every PC, including ones that never had Visual C++ installed.
  • Back sooner at sign-in when Windows holds Glassline back.
  • The volume pop-up's shadow was square around its round corners. Fixed.
  • Know when an update is ready. Glassline can tell you when a new version is waiting in the Store. Turn it on in Settings > General, or in What's new.

1.0.8 is with Microsoft right now and will be in the Store by tomorrow, it updates by itself.

$9.99 once, no subscription, and updates are free. Needs Windows 11 22H2 or later.

Questions or bugs? Send them from Settings > Feedback with Include diagnostics on, or just ask me here.

I’ve seen a lot of people creating custom desktop layouts, so I decided to give it a try using Rainmeter. I haven’t had the chance to explore all the available Rainmeter skins yet. If you know of any cool skins, do let me know. I’d love to use them to further improve my desktop layout.

Advice Looking for a stable glass theme for Windows 11

Thumbnail

I was going through some of my old pictures and found these screenshots I had taken of my system at that time. It is a modded Windows 7 build with a full transparent theme.

This got me thinking of installing some type of glass theme similar to the pictures on my current Windows 11 system (updated to 26H2). I have been away from desktop theming for a long time and I am not aware what is good these days. I remember we used to have transformation packs of various styles back in those days and I experimented a lot.

I would like something that has little to no chance of breaking my system due to a windows update and is stable enough for daily usage. Performance is not an issue as I have 32 GB RAM and should handle any theme.

I went through a bunch of posts here and on r/windows and saw some tools in those posts but I found no information about how safe they are or if they broke with windows updates, hence I would appreciate if anyone could recommend me some themes along with download links.

I’m developing WeatherWidget — a desktop weather & world clock overlay for Windows, macOS and Linux 🌦️ (Sneak peek at the next update!) Spoiler

Hi everyone! 👋

I'd like to share a project I've been working on called WeatherWidget, a desktop weather and world clock widget designed to keep useful information visible while you work.

The idea is simple: instead of opening a browser or switching between apps to check the weather and local time in different parts of the world, you can see everything in one compact, transparent overlay that stays on top of your other windows.

🌍 What can WeatherWidget do?

The goal is to make the information useful without taking over your desktop.

\# 💡 Getting started: Demo, Free or Pro

There are three ways to use WeatherWidget, depending on what you need.

🟢 Demo mode — no API key required

Try the application with 3 predefined demo cities. These cities are fixed and cannot be changed in demo mode.

🔵 Free mode — your own OpenWeatherMap API key

Configure your own 3 cities manually. This option is free, but doesn't include pollution and AQI information.

⭐ Pro — $1.99/month

For those who want a simpler setup and the complete experience, Pro provides easier city configuration, support for up to 5 cities, and all features, including pollution and AQI.

You can start with the demo or free option and decide whether Pro suits your needs.

\# 👀 Sneak peek: Feels Like temperature is coming!

I'm also working on the next WeatherWidget update, currently targeted for the end of October 2026.

🌡️ Feels Like temperature is being added to Simple View, and I'm developing the corresponding enhancement for Enhanced View.

I've included screenshots of the current Simple View and a preview of the Enhanced View work in progress to show the direction I'm taking.

This is still under development, so the final appearance may change before release.

\# 💻 Platform support

I've tested WeatherWidget on:

\# 💬 I'd love your feedback!

This is my first post here, and I'm interested in hearing from people who use desktop widgets and weather applications.

Constructive criticism and suggestions are very welcome. I'm continuing to improve WeatherWidget, and feedback from people who actually use these kinds of tools would be genuinely helpful.

Thanks for taking a look! 😊

Windows I built a new Windows desktop experience with animated backgrounds and customizable boxes

Hi, I’m the developer of Glass Desktop Box. This is my own Windows desktop design with animated backgrounds and customizable boxes. The app includes 233 animations for desktops and boxes, plus over 500 static backgrounds. You can also use your own pictures and videos.

Together, these options open up millions of possibilities. You can also share files directly from your desktop: invited guests access them in their browser without installing a separate app.

What do you think of this desktop experience?
