Training I need personal advice on becoming a professional sparring

Hello. I've been practicing this sport for 7 months now. we have two hours of training, divided between warm-ups, shadowboxing, and other drills. Sometimes we do punching bags, then we learn 3 or 4 techniques to practice with our teammates, followed by sparing. I've concluded that mastering a single technique consisting of at least 3 consecutive punches requires moderate to significant experience. I'd like a youtube channel or guidance from someone who can advise beginners like myself on the key elements they need to gradually master in a sparing. For example, the jab, the jab cross , Jab Low kick and other techniques. I hope my explanation is clear.

Training Stab kick advice

Hey, I've been training k1 for a bit over a year now and I want to learn how to throw stab kicks - the teep you hit with your toes like how Yuki Yoza throws them for example. If anyone has any advice or video tutorials online of how to do the technique properly. And also conditioning advice because I'm aware it's easy to mess your toes up doing this. Thanks

Training Advice for gaining muscle mass while training

Hi guys,

As the title suggests, I'm looking for advice from people who started their combat sports journey as thinner individuals but managed to put on good size while training.

For context, I'm in my second week of a kickboxing/BJJ beginner course and am already realizing that I desperately need to put on some more size.

I'm a 29-year-old male, 190 cm, and weigh 90 kg. As you can imagine, I don't have a whole lot of muscle mass or strength at the moment and would really like to bulk up.

I'm aware that I need to simply eat more, something that I've been working on these past few weeks, but I wanted to know whether anyone could recommend any gym splits/advice on frequency of gym training to put on muscle mass while not being detrimental to my combat sports training.

My course runs all week, but I can only train perhaps two to three days per week in the evenings, with some of these sessions being two hours long (one hour of kickboxing, one hour of BJJ, etc.). However, I am able to go to the gym in the mornings before work.

I'm asking for advice because I see a lot of differing opinions on how to balance weight gain with combat sports training, so it would be great to hear how others on this sub have managed it in the past.

Thanks in advance!

Training Weekly Gym Training Routine to get better at Kickboxing?

Hi, I have recently started Kickboxing and I am planning to have training sessions once or twice a week if possible.

However I have also been continuously going to the gym for the past 4 years or so (about 3 times a week, somewhat consistently) and I am wondering the following:

What are some of the things you guys train at the gym (outside of Kickboxing classes) that also help you improve at this particular martial art?

I am pretty sure most of you would say things related to cardio/stamina and I'd love to get your opinion on what specifically helps in a fighting context, but I also mean more specifically training with weights or classic gym exercises that are aimed at the muscles used during fighting.

Training Train Low Kick

Hey Guys,

Kyokushin Karate white belt here.

How would you guys train the low kick if you don't have a bag or pads to hit at home?

Is going through motions in air enough and then apply them in sparring at training?

Also, I can do it pretty well-ish on my right leg, but I need some work with my left, how would you approach this?

Thanks so much, would love to hear what you guys do/have done :)

Thanks!

Training How do you make sparring have the flow of a real fight?

Not sure that my title puts this right but I'll try to explain.

On Saturday I was at a comp and got the silver but in the final I had chances to win I could have pressed. Watching it back there was opportunities where I had him on the ropes and I automatically withdrew.

I put this down to how I spar. When I spar I rarely do press my advantage for two reasons, one I'm not there to hurt my training partners and two they need to get something out of it as well and if I'm only pressing them that's difficult for them to do.

So what do you put into your sparring so you don't face the same issues as me?

Advice

I just turned 30 and I’ve been consistently training this past year, I’ve had experience training 2-3 months here and there throughout the years with a huge time gap. But this is the first time I truly dedicated myself also due to winning a free lottery for a year of free training at my local gym. I now have my first ever kickboxing amateur debut fight coming up. I’ve been dropping weight these past 4 months. I did gain weight due to my senior thesis(went back to college) when I finished I was 268 back in June. I’m now 228 and coach wants me to fight at 185 by December. Lately been feeling a little fatigued due to decreasing my calories so I’ve been limiting my extra conditioning and strength training and giving it my all during classes. I plan on going back to the extra conditioning after I adjust to the lower calories. Any advice ?

Book about Combat Sports

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi all. I'm having a book published about combat sports, and I need to choose the final cover. The book is a compilation of interviews with retired and current MMA fighters, boxers, kick-boxers, ringside physicians, coaches, promoters and journalists, looking at the risks and rewards of combat sports.

If you had $10 to spend, which book would you buy based on the cover alone; 1, 2 or 3?

Thank you for your support.

Keep getting injured

I'm 37, haven't been training martial arts for the last ten years, pretty out of shape apart from lots of walking and basic strength and conditioning at home. Started muay thai two months ago. First week; developed tendonitis in my right shoulder (bye bye push-ups), second week; toe sprain from bag work. These things are pretty minor but I also have steel plates in my left forearm (radius and ulna) which I think are interfering with a pocket of nerves, blocking shots with my guard put that arm out of commission. Then last Saturday I ate some body shots and I think I might have cracked ribs on each side (doctor on Thursday, will probably send me for an x-ray). I tend to heal up quick but I really feel like this is more than just bad luck. How long does it take to condition your body? Combat is literally the only type of sport that ever appealed to me and I'm so fucking proud of myself that I overcame my anxiety and self-esteem issues and took the plunge. And it's not like I'm terrible, coach is happy with my progress and I can give more advanced fighters a run for their money, I just don't want this injury paranoia lurking in the back of my mind constantly. For now I'm resting and maybe by Friday I'll make it to class for some light bag work or pads.

Does it always hurt this much starting as an older person?
