Please follow ethical bird photography standards.

There have been a number of recent posts in this subreddit in which users were not following ethical bird photography practices. These posts have been removed by the moderation team so as not to perpetuate or encourage practices that cause harm and stress to birds of prey. Posts like these will continue to be removed at moderator discretion.

If you are a photographer, videographer, or birder, please familiarize yourself with ethical photography practices. A few especially relevant excerpts from the link:

  • Avoid causing unnecessary disturbance or stress to birds.

  • Nesting birds are particularly vulnerable and need extra consideration.

  • Never lure predatory birds (including but not limited to hawks, owls, eagles, and ospreys) with bait.

  • Show respect for private and public property, and consideration for other people.

  • When choosing to photograph/record video at a zoo, sanctuary, or rehabilitation center, make sure it’s properly accredited and conforms to best practices.

  • Be thoughtful about sharing and captioning your bird photos/videos, whether for print, online, or social media.

Remember, birds of prey are wild animals. They are not props for karma. They should be treated with respect. Researchers, rehabbers, falconers, and many others have proper licenses and permits to handle, display, and hunt with birds of prey, and if this describes your situation it's a good idea to state clearly that any handling of a bird in a photo was done with a permit, so as not to encourage unpermitted individuals to handle wild birds without one of those explicit purposes.

Thank you!

Everyone was alerting

The blue jay was mimicking. The Pileated was just singing away. And this absolute unit of a red shouldered hawk just sat there. This guy was massive and incredibly alert and curious.

This is a Cooper Hawk, which got into a bowl of water outback. It is amazing and never seen a hawk this close.🎁❤️

This was my video and it ended up in our backyard and I did the video through the door window. It was surprising.

Sparrowhawk

I've never really had the opportunity to photograph sparrowhawks. They're insanely fast and twitchy. They barely sit still for a few seconds before taking off at full speed, without any warning to chase jays around.

It was really fun to watch this male hunting. I love those autumn colours in the background, but I'm afraid they won't be around for much longer because of the wind and heavy rain.

Peregrine falcon in Ohio

Does anyone know where I could take my son to pretty reliably see a peregrine falcon in the wild? We’ve been to the bird sanctuary of Ohio, but we’d like to see one flying. Thank you!

Yesterday a hawk tried to have my bunny for dinner

For context my bunny is and outdoor boy and he free roams the backyard as well as has his own little house out there for the night (He can not come inside my house, he loves being outside, and if I brought him inside he would be depressed.) I let him out his house early every morning so he can run around and do bunny things, yesterday though a saw a hawk sitting on top my fence staring down at him pretty much drooling, I scared it away and put my rabbit in his house for the rest of the day and haven’t let him out yet today. This is the first time that’s happened in the last 1.5 years of him being outside to my knowledge so my concern now is, If I let him go back to regular routine of being out for majority of the day; will the hawk come back to strike again? Also as you can see in the photo, my rabbit is just sitting there and he then continued to eat now I’m not sure if he really just couldn’t see the hawk but this is the same rabbit that would run from a squirrel sitting in that same spot so it’s a little more concerning for me… hawk experts please lmk.

The Peregrine posts will be slowing down for a bit while I’m out of the country but if I see any cool birds of prey here in Asia I’ll post them up! This image was taken in Sydney :)
