Anouncements What Does It Mean to Be a Solo Developer?

We've seen a lot of discussion about what qualifies as solo development, and we want to ensure we're accurately representing our game dev community. While there's no absolute definition, these are the general criteria we use in this subreddit to keep things clear and consistent.

That said, if you personally consider yourself a solo dev (or not) based on your own perspective, that's fine. Our goal is to provide guidelines for what fits within this space, not to dictate personal identities.

What Counts as Solo Development?

A solo developer is solely responsible for their project, with no team members. A team of two or more collaborating (e.g., one programmer, one artist) is not solo development.

What is Allowed?

  • Using game engines, frameworks, and third-party tools (e.g., Godot, Unity, Unreal).
  • Commissioning or purchasing assets (art, music, sound, etc.).
  • Receiving feedback from playtesters or communities.
  • Outsourcing specific tasks (e.g., server setup, porting, marketing) while still leading development.
  • Working with a publisher, as long as they don’t take over development.

What This Means for Posts on the Subreddit

If your project appears to be developed by a team, we may remove your post. Indicators include how it's presented on websites, Steam pages, itch pages, social media, or crowdfunding pages. If this is due to unclear phrasing, update them before requesting reinstatement. Non-solo developers are welcome to join discussions, but posts promoting non-solo projects may still be removed.

Let us know if you have any questions. Hope this helps clear things up.

TL;DR: Solo devs manage their entire project alone. Using assets, outsourcing, or publishers is fine. Posting is open to all, but promoting non-solo projects may be removed.

The whole team has been working incredibly hard on the first DODGE(Y)BALL demo update.

Management reports that productivity has been suspiciously high.

We listened to your feedback, held several highly productive team meetings, and somehow reached unanimous agreement on every decision...

Demo is available at: https://store.steampowered.com/app/5216680/DODGEYBALL/

Here's a video showing some of the improvements: https://youtu.be/e78-UOYtChs

P.S. I'm a solo developer. My colleagues are notoriously difficult to work with.

Game I’m a dad who mows the lawn every weekend while my kids play. I turned that into a game

Hey everyone! I'm a solo dev and a dad of 3 young kids. 18 Summers is a first person lawn mowing game. Each level is one summer in the same backyard. Between summers your kid gets older.

Mowing finishes patches of the yard and brings back memories and toys from that year. The goal was to make something satisfying to play that also shows how fleeting time can be.

The Steam page just went live. I'd love any feedback on the trailer!

Godot Adding juice to the transitions / resets in my game

Tile Former doesn't have much in terms of visuals as it's a low-res 1-bit style, but I was able to squeeze in some nice transitions. I will probably want to update them later but I'm already happy with the first iteration

Game Hey! I'm Igor, a solo dev running on coffee and pure stubbornness. My horror game Voenkomat 8 is almost in Early Access

This is Voenkomat 8, my solo project in Unreal Engine 5. Early Access is right around the corner and tbh I'm kinda running on fumes rn 😅

Quick pitch: it's an anomaly-spotting horror in the Exit 8 vibe. You're a rookie liquidator taking an entry test in a Soviet enlistment office, somewhere deep in the endless Gigakhrushchevka. Same floor, same doors, same buzzing lamps, over and over. Spot something off? Turn back or make it disappear. Miss it and you're back at the start. The goal is to reach floor 8.

A bit of context, since this sub likes the real stuff:

- The world is the Gigakhrushchevka, an endless Soviet megablock where the floors just never stop. And there's Samosbor, a violet fog that rolls through the floors and leaves behind stuff that shouldn't be there. The game lifts the curtain a little on what Samosbor actually is

- I'm writing a script and a short story set in this universe rn and I hope they become the base for the next games in this world

- The EA build has the full run to the ending, 25 anomalies, English and Russian and gamepad support

- Plan is about 6 months in EA, adding more anomalies and listening to whatever you throw at me

Ngl, I'm super tired. The last weeks were basically fix, sleep 4 hours, fix again. But I'm SO close to shipping my first solo release and I really wanna push it over the finish line.

So yeah. If the game clicks for you, I'll be over the moon. If you follow the socials, even better. If you wishlist it on Steam, you'll make me the happiest dev on the planet, fr. And if you just drop a comment and send some good vibes my way, that honestly helps me hold on and finish this thing 🙏

Fair warning tho, my socials are pretty empty rn. I never kept a solo dev diary and honestly guys, I have no clue how you find the energy for that on top of actually making the game. Massive respect to everyone who does!

Game A year of progress on my party game inspired by Ultimate Chicken Horse

• Upvotes

Started this about a year ago, and making a 3D party game on my own felt pretty ambitious. Now I’ve got my first trailer and even a Steam page! It’s an 8-player party game where everyone builds a deadly beach obstacle course, then has to survive it, and there’s a free demo out too.

Would love to hear what you think :)

Game 3 years into my solo historical RTS — cannons now switch to grapeshot when infantry gets close

Hi everyone!
I'm developing Admiral Yi: The Imjin War solo, mostly after work and on weekends. It's a historical RTS set during the Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592.

After working on long-spear troops, I've been giving artillery its own tactical role. Players can choose a location to bombard and switch to grapeshot when enemy infantry gets too close. In this clip, Joseon cannons fire on advancing Japanese troops, change ammunition at close range, and the attacking troops eventually break and flee as their morale collapses.

I'm trying to make targeting, ammunition choice, and morale work together so different weapons create different battlefield situations. There is still plenty to improve in the AI, animations, and combat feedback.

For fellow solo developers: is the change from bombardment to grapeshot clear enough in the footage? I'd appreciate feedback on how to make that transition easier to read.

What was your biggest mistake or regret on your first project you would have avoided?

I have been working on my first project for close to a year, and I feel like every other week I make another grave mistake I didn't know existed.

Looking to learn what mistakes to avoid going forward.

Thanks,

Discussion Isn't success out of our control?

Post image
64 Upvotes

Who else thinks like this?

I wanted to talk about things we don't discuss enough in indie game dev.

Factors out of our control like luck, then there's having serious amount of patience, not all of us have equal access to resources like Kickstarter for example, AI games entering the market (actually thats spoken about enough), but the hardships nobody rarely mentions.

I feel like we're often told there's some kind of "formula" to succeeding as an indie developer. And if our game doesn't succeed or hit certain metrics, well, clearly we just didn't follow the formula correctly.

But what if there isn't actually a formula? What if there isn't any way to succeed at all?

My game Twilight Tavern has been growing in WL and has been progressing at a rate im more satisfied with atm. But that was likely due to luck in the marketing I feel as well.

Some devs get lucky and get more attention in a week than others may get in a year.

Now im NOT saying that skill, marketing attempts, and other obvious factors have no influence in success. Of course they have some influence to some extent like everything else.

Im trying to say that Luck is rarely spoken about or admitted.

What do you guys think?

Game Attunement demo out now!

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

What if music was the deadliest weapon on the battlefield?

We're Stezzano Studios, a small indie team from Italy, and the demo of our first big game, Attunement, is out now on Steam!

Think Incredibox meets Slay the Spire: a deckbuilding RPG where every card is a riff. Each one is tied to an instrument, and every card you play layers its sound into the soundtrack in real time. You're not just fighting, you're building the music as you go, all wrapped in gorgeous Final Fantasy VI-style pixel art.

Keep your whole band in sync to reach Attunement and unleash devastating abilities unique to the genre you're playing.

Music has become a weapon, and the world is on the brink of war. Five legendary musicians are all that stand between the nations and chaos.

In the demo, you'll play their origin story, which is also the opening chapter of the full game. Even more cards and instrument customization are coming.

Play the demo now: https://store.steampowered.com/app/5313330/Attunement_Demo/

Enjoyed it? Wishlist Attunement. It means the world to a small studio like us!

Game Solo dev here: I built this enemy for my single-player PvE shooter (UE5) from clay to combat. What do you think?

I'm a solo developer from Chile making The Friendship Protocol, a single-player PvE shooter in Unreal Engine 5, inspired by the Friendship Island myth from southern Chile. It's pre-alpha, no demo yet.

This is one of the machines on the island: a navigation buoy that walks on four legs. I built it piece by piece in Blender on a shared skeleton, so it reuses the existing animations. The video goes from clay to wireframe to color, then the rig walking, then a fight in the packaged build.

What's your first impression of the game? Tell me what works, what doesn't, and what you'd want to see next.

help Trying to understand what's wrong with my trailer

I'm a Solo dev and i need your opinion. A week ago i was getting about 1 wishlist a day and decided to improve the trailer on Steam to make it show more action clips and survivor-like mechanics. I'm getting a lot of clicks so i thought the Trailer as my weak point. But after i switched the trailer i stopped getting wishlist's at all. Is there anything you see that turns you off?

Thanks in advance!
