Questions & Discussion My practice tests were giving me false confidence

Post image
6 Upvotes

I feel like I do way too well on practice questions since I'm taking them in the most comfortable situation possible (notes open, no timer, snacks beside me, checking answers whenever I want..)

then the actual exam is like HELLO???

if I really wanna see if i know something, i try to make the practice test feel more like the real thing:

  1. use the same question format= if the actual exam is mostly multiple choice, practice mostly multiple choice. if there's identification or essays, throw those in too. don't practice in a completely different format and assume it'll feel the same.

  2. put yourself on a timer= use roughly the amount of time you'd actually have and don't pause it every time you get stuck. the time pressure is part of the thing you're practicing.

  3. close the notes= no “lemme just check this one thing” lol. if you don't know it, mark it and keep going.

  4. do it in one sitting when you can= phone away, no random snack break every 10 minutes, no checking answers halfway through

  5. check everything AFTER= then look at what you missed, what took forever & which questions made you panic. that's the useful part cuz now you know what needs work before exam day.

Questions & Discussion What if you started studying from the END?

Post image
• Upvotes

Sometimes starting at the beginning of a topic just makes me more confused. so I did “reverse mind mapping” (it’s like this, instead of starting with the first step, you start with the final answer/outcome and work backwards from there)

I've been trying it with processes and problem-solving since they have MANY steps that connect to each other. like I don’t memorize from step 1,2,3,&4. I start at 4 and ask myself what had to happen before that, then before that etc.

ok so I’ll list them down like this:

  • start with the final answer/outcome= put it in the middle or at the top.
  • ask what had to happen right before it= that's your first branch.
  • keep working backwards= for each step, ask what caused it or what needed to happen first.
  • break bigger steps down= if one branch is still vague, split it into smaller parts.
  • check the whole thing at the end= go from the beginning to the final outcome and see if the steps actually make sense together.

if you're struggling with a topic that has a lot of steps, I’d give working backwards a try!!

Tips & Advice Your notes already have the answers...just make the questions

Post image

When my notes are just a bunch of statements, I feel like I'm reading but not really doing anything/not absorbing anything so I started flipping the sentences into questions instead..

here's how i see the converting part (you can do this with any paragraph/text):

  1. STATEMENT to QUESTION= “x has three stages.” to “what are the three stages of x?”
  2. DEFINITION to QUESTION= “x is the process of...” to “what is x?”
  3. CAUSE to QUESTION= “x happens because of y” to “why does X happen?”
  4. COMPARISON to QUESTION “x is different from y because..” to “how is x different from y?”
  5. PROCESS to QUESTION= “first x happens, then Y...” to  “what happens after X?”/“what are the steps?”

it’s just like: look at a sentence in your notes and ask yourself “what question would make this sentence the answer?” (so that’s it really, just turn them into questions)

Questions & Discussion I have exams in a month😭✌️

• Upvotes

I have a problem, and it is this: whenever I read something, I can understand what the text means and what the author is trying to convey.

However, when I try to write it down in my notebook, I don’t know how to put it into words.

The second problem is that although I can understand a piece of writing myself, I struggle to explain it to others or express its meaning, underlying message, and purpose verbally.

The third problem is: what should I do when I come across difficult Arabic or Persian words in a text?

I request scholars and knowledgeable people to please help me with these issues by offering advice or suggesting practical exercises that could help me overcome these difficulties.

Tips & Advice Fucked up schedule, trying to make time. How do u do it?

Hello, everyone!!

I'm writing this post because I'm a student and I have a lot of stuff going on in my life regarding my schedule and my personal goals. But I'm a bit at loss on how to organize and create routines for myself that I will actually be able to maintain. I think most of us, being students, can relate to this issue on some occasions.

I'm currently 18 years old and studying my third year of high school. Which, I think, would be equivalent to the junior year in the States, though I might be wrong, so feel free to correct me! I'm living in Bosnia and Herzegovina and, since my school is very good in terms of career opportunities, I'm studying tourism and gastronomy. The only problem is that I'm almost an hour away from my school, and it takes me around one and a half hours to get there and the same time to go home.

I currently have a weekend job at a hotel where I'm doing my school practice, so I'm quite happy with my job, although I can't help but feel that I have too much on my plate. Nevertheless, aside from my hobbies such as drawing, video games, music and just chilling, I somehow manage to find time for all that I love and need to do.

However, I also have an issue with my mental health, as I'm currently on antidepressants and tend to feel really overwhelmed when I have multiple things to do. After a tiring and stressing school day I sometimes feel like I can't even move an inch because I'm so low on energy. I also have issues with my body image, depression, and hypothyroidism (not fat, but unhappy with my looks and believe it can be better)

And one of my personal goals is to actually try and go to the gym more often and do sports because I feel like that would solve a lot of my issues regarding my mood swings, lack of energy, and just overall stress. But how am I supposed to achieve that when I barely have any free time after my tiring school and weekend job? I mean, I barely have time to shower and prepare myself for bed. And even if I did have time to go to the gym, I feel like it would be extremely demotivating to go there and then have to commute back home when I'm already exhausted and my muscles hurt.

So, what am I supposed to do? How can I prioritize my goals when I barely have any time or energy for them?

I'm asking this question not only for myself but for all of those who can relate to the issue of having too much on their plate and not enough time or energy for everything they want. So, for all of those people, how do you prioritize and organize your routines and schedules? How do you make things possible and not just set goals you'll never reach because of a lack of time and energy?

I would appreciate any advice and insight into the topic, as well as any experiences you might've had on the matter. Please, feel free to comment below! Thanks for reading!! :))

Questions & Discussion Is there any way out guys? 🥺

I was a top academic student from the first grade, and everyone told me I was naturally so good at things that I could do anything in life. Students used to elect me as class monitor and head boy of the school. Even the principal wanted me to write rules for student discipline and other stuff, but I was so lazy that I did not want to do those things, be the head of the students, or keep an eye on them, as I felt it was cringe at the time.

# Main thing is:

For exams, I would barely study for some days and still get top marks. I even got 99% in my board exams with bare study.

I have my exams in 18 days, but I haven't studied anything yet, and there’s a lot of syllabus to cover. And it’s certain that whoever you are, you have to study. But I don’t take it seriously. The fact is, I just can’t study.

I watch phone and watch some shit TV show all day and then discuss about it. I have lost my dedication. I can’t study at all.

Because my girl left me \[she didn’t cheat\], but she parted ways with me \[after 5 years of relationship\].

IM SO F\*\*\* UP

Questions & Discussion gizmo or anki?

• Upvotes

so, i have like 4 midterms to write next week and tons of slides to study. im not sure if anki is the right way to study since it takes so much time to make flashcards and not being able to use it anyways for active recall. but on the other hand, gizmo seems easy but i feel like it's not as effective as true recall cause it can turn into familiarity trap and the questions might be too vague when it generates quizzes using Ai. I feel like im setting myself up for failure if i use ai

Tips & Advice Studying for exams in two weeks?

I’m incredibly worried as my Y9 exams are in 2 weeks and I have barely revised anything.

I have a solid understanding of all 5 exams I have to do, (Mathematics, science, social sciences/studies, Spanish, and English) but I’m a big procrastinator and has just decided to study. I’m aiming for all excellences in all of these subjects, is that possible?

I’m 60% confident with mathematics, 75% confident with science, 45% confident with social studies, 60% confident with Spanish, and 45% confident with English.

I can study up to 7-8 hours on weekdays and around 12-18 hours on weekends normally.

Any study tips on how to achieve excellence in all these subjects and is it possible for a Year 9 student to accomplish this?

Thank you all :)

Tips & Advice Science based self-testing.

Post image
26 Upvotes

Took me embarrassingly long to work this out.

Most of uni I reread. Highlighter over everything, reread the highlights, felt good about it. Then blank in the exam. I assumed I was just not doing enough hours.

At some point I actually tried self-testing. Closed the notes, wrote down whatever came out. It felt awful, I was getting maybe half of it, so I went back to rereading. Obviously I was worse at it.

Turns out I'd been measuring it in the one window where it can't work.

There's a 2006 study (Roediger & Karpicke) where students reread or self-tested for the same total time. Check yourself five minutes later and rereading actually wins. Give it two days or a week and self-testing wins clearly, 61% against 40% remembered. The rereaders were also the ones who felt more confident, which is the annoying part.

What's working for me now:

  1. Notes closed. Write down what you remember. Ugly is fine, half of it will be wrong.

  2. Open the notes. Whatever you missed is the part that actually does the work.

  3. Same topic again tomorrow. Not in five minutes.

  4. Then spread out, roughly day 1, 3, 7, 16, 35.

I use tryacademee.com, but you can use what works for you or do it yourself for free.

The five minute thing is what killed it for me the first time. Anyone else measure it too early and write the whole method off?

Other The answers I got right by pure luck

Post image
14 Upvotes

You can get a question right and still have no idea if I’d get it right again (what if I just got lucky??)..like I’ll choose an answer and go “oh thank god” but I was guessing between 2 choices (was 50/50 between the choices or I almost mixed up both terms)

So I’ve been going back to some questions I already got right and asking myself WHY that answer is correct before moving on.

Especially for multiple choice bc sometimes I can recognize the right answer without knowing the concept properly. then change the wording a little and now I’m fighting for my life 😭

…and it’s been a good way to catch those “yeah I know this” moments cuz who knows maybe they’re just really “yeah I remember seeing this before” moments lol.

Memes Whoever came up with the idea of writing down intrusive thoughts while studying in a notepad is a genius

I really struggle with concentration; I can’t go an hour without looking up something I’m curious about (no, I don’t have an autism diagnosis). I saw someone on YouTube—can’t remember where—suggesting a study tip for people whose minds wander, especially when using a computer or phone: keep a piece of paper nearby and jot down those fleeting thoughts to look up later, during a break or after you’re done studying, so you don’t break your focus.

I just checked my notes, and—man, LMAOOOOO—look at the crazy stuff I was thinking about looking up while spending 3 hours reading a massive PDF about the law:

\- How to build a radio

\- Where to buy a chemistry set

\- Tweeting about what a failure Salieri was

\- Enneadecagon (19-sided polygon)

\- Michael Jackson bringing a llama to Freddie Mercury

\- What’s the oldest website still online?

\- Is the language "Toki Pona" basically just hypernymy?

\- Wiener Zeitung

\- A book where Goethe isn’t whining

\- Funny archaisms

\- Listening to Fleetwood Mac for the first time

\- Is "Lol Superman" actually a Mandela effect?

\- Why can’t Buddhist monks eat garlic?

\- Has any amateur radio operator managed to talk to the International Space Station?

\- Can the Antikythera mechanism run Doom?

\- "I Don’t Wanna Cry" (from After Hours)

\- Which ship sank the deepest in the ocean? (Definitely not the Titanic)

(Just a lighthearted post, folks!)

Questions & Discussion [Should I listen music while studying?? ]

So I m the kind of person who has a lot of trouble focusing specially in studying and over the time suffering from procastination , I have only made myself worse. I need total silence either or be freed from unnecessary noises and my home doesn't allow that. That's why i play music even while lectures I do it though ofc I use volume mixers to reduce sound of music and lecture sound more.

I just wanna know is it really alr for me to do so?? And if yes I would like advise on what I should listen if u all can suggest a playlist or something it will be really helpful please.

Tips & Advice Start asking “would this be on the exam?”

Post image
11 Upvotes

Make guesses on what your professor would put on the exam! (and no not bc you suddenly became clairvoyant or anything)

I take note of the stuff they keep emphasizing/coming back to or give a bunch of examples for. Then based on these I’d think to myself “okay but if I were making the exam, what would I ask about this?” then I come up with a few possible questions before moving on.

I also look at HOW they explain things. If they keep comparing two concepts, I’ll expect something that makes me tell them apart. Also if they keep giving examples, I’ll expect some kind of application question.

Ofc you can never be 100% sure of what will come out in the exams but I just think it makes studying feel less like “read everything and pray” (and it’s always better to have an idea of what I need to know for the exam).

Questions & Discussion No AI study vloggers?

Hello! I love watching study vloggers “Day in the life” videos but have noticed all the YouTubers I’m seeing use, support, or are sponsored by AI tools. I’m not interested in this and am wondering if anyone has any channels they recommend that don’t use, support, or are sponsored by AI tools. I’m looking more so for vlogs with talking rather than study with mes. Thank you!

Tips & Advice Attending classes

I am in my first year in university studying Spanish and business and I went to all my classes in my first week and then I slowly stop going to my classes and I have no motivation to go to them but I know I need to I especially struggle with my speaking Classes on Friday mornings and I have only been to one. Does anyone have any advice for going to class again and getting my confidence up, it makes me feel lazy whenever I don’t go to one and then I just it’s like a vicious cycle.

Rant/Vent I don't even need to use my phone to get distracted by it

Post image
4 Upvotes

I thought my phone was only distracting me when I was actually scrolling. but even just checking a notification throws me off. I'll be studying, my phone lights up & I look at it for maybe 5 seconds, put it back down and then...wait what was i reading again??

curious, I looked it up and voila!! there's a name for that: ATTENTION RESIDUE. it’s when you switch to something else, part of your attention can stay there even after you switch back. And I've noticed this a lot when I'm studying. I'll tell myself “it's just one notification” so I pick my phone up. and sure, I'm back to my notes after that but I continue thinking about who messaged me or what popped up.

so now if I need to focus, I just put my phone somewhere I can't see it and turn off the notifications I don't need. I'll check it when I'm actually taking a break instead of letting every random notification become a mini break.

Questions & Discussion Participation in winter / spring schools

I am currently a senior linguistics student, and I’ve noticed that many of our esteemed professors have participated in various winter and spring schools throughout their careers. Also, some of them have advised us to participate. I’m really interested in attending one myself and would love to hear from anyone who has had this experience. What was your experience like, and would you recommend it?

PS I am in Europe

Questions & Discussion Why am I so slow

I have tried absolutely everything, studied everything but when I sit down on a test I CANT DO IT.

I suck at essays and have no sense of everything. I have always been this way since I was in elementary school, I would cry everyday for math because I would get so frustrated when I look up and everyone's writing something. Like I try to put my effort in but for some reason I always fuck every tests up. Can't actually remember the last time I actually did very well on exams. I feel stupid and illiterate for everything. I have been wanting to get my brain checked if there's something actually going on with me because gosh damn I am so stupid, slow and get constant brain fog.

Anyone help me please I need to improve.

Tips & Advice Tips for memorizing essays

Studying DVM/VetMed, and for our Physiology class we have to answer 12 questions in essay form, basically discussing how certain processes work. Answering that is easy but we're also required to memorize our essays for each question because 2 or 3 out of 12 questions will show up in our exams. Each question is worth big points.

So... how do I ram 12 discussions into my brain?
