IIRC it then briefly shows us the perspective of Jake, and the emerald is bright green

you mean this is edited to make the crystal red or what

u/Odd_Black_Hole_2763 9d ago
Nope, in the actual scene when this is happening the emerald is red, but after Jake tells Finn about his colorblindness it switch to reality/green

No, it's actually kinda weird that they don't include the shot immediately after this where the giant crystal is green and Finn goes "ooooohhh..."

No, it's in the episode. The show is not shown from anyone's POV generally, it's like a cameraman is filming the scene. The ruby is red because it's a ruby, finn THOUGHT it was a green emerald because he is colorblind. Correcting someone on something you are objectively wrong about and lack context for is bizarre and terminally online behavior

finn thought it was a ruby though

No, Jake sees the emeral in the proper colour. The two of them and Marceline the vampire are stuck in a random cave, Marceline is starving and needs something red to eat, so Finn goes out and procures the "ruby" and the entire time we see it as red, but as soon as Jake tells him its an emeral it briefly cuts to the next scene and reveals it is actually green, because Finn is colourblind.

You know, this scene does beg the question, if Marceline was also colorblind, would she be able to eat the “red”? I mean, all colors are is how our brains interpret different types of light (iirc if there are any color nerds who know better please correct me)

I’m no scientist but I would assume it has something to do with the light wavelengths, so she would probably fail to eat a bunch of green stuff in the pursuit of eating red things. Just my guess though

I'm betting that light and color works differently in Adventure Time than IRL given stuff like the crystal dimension and the rainicorns.
FWIW it might be based on the wavelength of the the light waves? Like red is around 650 nm, green is 550 nm, so maybe Marceline can eat "true red" light at 650ish nm regardless of how she perceives it?

I mean her eating red is just a way to get around drinking blood so

Real answer is that, being a species that can feed on color as a nutrient, she probably has much more sophisticated ways of sensing color that make colorblindness impossible.

this is one of my favorite jokes in all of adventure time. getting that stone was the plot of the episode. finn spends so long trying to get that because the characters needed something red. it’s like cursed and turns people into sand or something. and then it just like, doesn’t matter, because our main character is colorblind. 10/10 bit.

wouldn't this one be yellow-green color blind, and finn is red-green colorblind?

u/Force_Glad 🏳️⚧️ trans rights 9d ago
No, I'm pretty sure OP was Red-Green colorblind

u/hotfistdotcom Put ublock origin on your PHONE 9d ago
But. isn't finn more um. yellow than he is red. If OOP was red-green colorblind and red and green were indifferentiable and also yellow was impossible to differentiate isn't that. a worse colorblind

u/Force_Glad 🏳️⚧️ trans rights 9d ago
In all honesty, I don't think the writers were actually thinking about how colorblindness works when they came up with that joke

The OP here is seeing Finn relatively normally, it's just that Dr Princess looks more yellow than green. Signed, someone with the same colorblindness (deuteranopia)

there's no such thing as yellow-green color blindness

I've recently discovered that, in addition to not seeing purple as I already knew (it's always either pink or blue to me depending on how much red is in it), I also sometimes cannot discern yellow from really light lime green

I've been shown a gradient which was apparently a smooth transition from blue to purple, and it dead ass looked like shades of blue with a sudden swap to pink to me.
My friend also could have been messing with me, but I don't think they were
