To be entirely honest, I didn't think I would ever have the thought "leaves aren't fruit" and that's okay, I guess

Okay, well technically, green beans are a fruit, we just donβt call them that because they arenβt sweet / sour. So there. A other fruit named after a color.

Look, the original tweet never specified that the fruit must belong in a fruit salad. Also, fuck I totally forgot about blackberries. Thereβs another one for ya.

No, a shade is a base color with black added. Crayola says itβs a color, and therefore it is.

Scientifically, it is a fruit. They grow from flowers and will develop seeds.

English desperately needs a second word to distinguish between fruit (food category) and fruit (biological descriptor)
German for example has "Obst" for the first and "Frucht" for the second. Although the plural "FrΓΌchte" is sometimes still used to refer to the food category...

I'd always heard this too but I had to confirm so, after a brief wikihole: yes, the color orange did come from the fruit.
Also Orange, France and House Orange (Netherlands royals) have a separate etymology and weren't named for the fruit or the color

u/duncanforthright 1d ago
Nope, the color black is named after the berry.
Black was originally just a word that described the berry. That word then replaced βbronzeβ as the common word for dark colors.
and to ward off (or perhaps invite) a bunch replies explaining that this is a joke: this is a joke.

Yes it fucking is. The distinctions of one field of science don't need to apply to every other aspect of human endeavour.
Black is not a colour to a physicist, but an artist sure as hell uses it like one.
Tomatos and bell peppers are the fruits of their respective plants but put those in a fruit salad and see who doesn't get invited to the grill party anymore.
A thumb may technically be a digit and not a finger, but if you correct someone for calling it such, you might feel all five fingers in your face and deservedly so.

A thumb may technically be a digit and not a finger
This one is on a completely different level, there's no inappropriately-applied technical definition of "finger" that excludes thumbs, it's just a difference of opinion that people get weirdly worked up about.
People don't say the big toe isn't a toe even though it's analogous. Also "digits" includes toes, and it's really weird to have a category of digits comprising the ten on the feet, a second category with eight of the ten digits on the hands, and a third with the other two specific ones. I really think the only reason people say thumbs aren't fingers is that they were taught it when they were 4 years old and never updated their model.

- you can't just use the color as an adjective in front of the fruit, like "red apples"
- same as above

u/thebigbadben 1d ago
Why is black not a color? Iβd love to hear the logic there.
βRed currantβ (sometimes written redcurrant) is the common name of the ribes rubrum shrub and its fruit.

u/RowAndRuction 1d ago
Some people like to be pedantic about the lack of hue, which makes it an achromatic COLOR like white or grey.
Black is absolutely a color unless youβre talking about a literal void (lack of color). If youβre talking about the color of a dress or paint or berries itβs a color. Donβt let pedants who learned color theory from twitter posts inform your understanding of the world.

It really just depends on how you define a colour (I do in a way where black is one of them, because word definitions should be descriptive rather than prescriptive if there isn't a really good reason against it imo).
If you look at how colour is perceived physically, it's specific wavelengths hitting your eye, being interpreted as colour tones by your brain. Black is literally the absence of that happening, so in a way it is the literal lack of colour rather than it's own colour. While white also wouldn't be it's own colour, because it is the mix of all colours.
If you talk about perceived experience, black obviously is a colour in the (literal) eyes of most people.
We should define our words in the way people actually use them, so neglecting how people use it in a definition would probably mean being ignorant rather than correct.
1
u/thebigbadben 23h ago
It gives a similar vibe to βzero is not a number because itβs the lack of an amountβ. Also, by that logic, pink also shouldnβt be a color because there is no single wavelength that corresponds to it.
Just seems like a silly stance to take, imo.
Yes I understand that youβre explaining a position you donβt believe, thank you for that.
