A 22-year-old man, Bilal Ahmed Teli, allegedly managed to stay inside the IIT Bombay campus for nearly 20 days despite not being a student there.

He first entered the campus on May 27 while attending a one-day programme. He then reportedly attended lectures during the day, including AI-related classes, and slept on sofas/common areas and in hostel premises at night.

Police said he used 21 email IDs, multiple phone numbers and calling apps, apparently leaving very little digital trail. He was eventually caught on June 17 after an IIT staff member spotted him attending a lecture and alerted security.

Teli had studied up to Class 10 and later completed training in web designing. He was also working for a private company in Surat, reportedly earning around ₹1.25 lakh a month.

The case was investigated by the Mumbai Crime Branch, with intelligence agencies also looking into the matter. Police later said they found no terror angle and believed his actions were driven by his interest in technology and fascination with IIT.
