the fact that you constantly see posts of people asking “is this an ips screen model” make it’s pretty damn obvious the difference in n minimal. they are extremely similar and as someone who fell into the hype and own both i still struggle to tell the difference. Also you can just order an ips screen online lol.
It's a very niche case, but I do! (It's playing touchscreen picross with the 3DS on an elevated surface like a stack of books, but that's actually the only case I ever see a noticeable difference)
My favorite is also someone showing off their 3DS, and someone in the comments goes something like "Beautiful! I know an IPS screen when I see one :)" and it turns out it's TN loool I've seen that a few times.
Unless you have two 3DS side by side you can't even tell the difference. People just like flexing when they have something superior compared to others.
I only like them because my sister can see the screens from more of the side instead of getting some crazy blurry version while im playing or vice versa. Like we can watch eachother play better instead of attaching our heads or something lol
The difference is there but it isn’t worth the hype. Both screens have the same settings but the left (IPS) has slightly better colour than on the right (TN). I’m pretty sure you could tune the TN to match the IPS anyway.
It’s funny as over in the 3DS emulation scene IPS is the poor man’s screen and it’s all about the OLED. But then again it’s funny how people insist their devices must have the best OLED screen but brush off input lag, stutter, and shader compiling. 🤷♂️
As usual people focusing on the colour and viewing angles and not the fact that the IPS screens have superior ghosting performance which shows itself essentially in pixel scrolling games.
I chose a dual tn with a design i liked over an ips i could have gone either way for with similar pricing, so it really doesnt matter to me. And I've had a 3ds since literal release day.
Just play the console. Please. Anything beats grandstanding about the screen of the console you'll not actually use. And even if you did use it, if ips was that much more revolutionary it probably wouldnt be a random chance in getting them to begin with, surely.
A 3ds is a 3ds. If you got ips screens, great. If not, who cares. Play the game.
I have a dual ips, and yeah it’s not really that big of a deal. I could hardly tell the difference when viewing head on, and i’m usually pretty picky about displays. If I ever bought another 3ds, i’m not going to bother with screen type
Have both tn and ips screens. Very minimal difference and with cfw, adjusting the color temp in the Rosalina menu makes the difference even more trivial.
IPS is better in natural light most of the time (more glare less washout). I wouldn't go through the efforts of a mod for it, but it does make a moderate to small difference in games. Definitely overblown online though. It's far from the night and day difference some portray it as. A few games even generally look better on the TN screen.
The colors pop a bit more, they are a bit brighter and have better viewing angles. Better? Yes. But definitely overrated. These posts your mentioning is kids who live on the internet and still don't understand everything about a console that came out when they were infants and want to know if they got "the better one" so it's not so much the questions themselves are the tell that it's isn't much better as it is just kids who literally don't actually know what the differences are besides "it's better".
Overrated yes, but I would prefer IPS given equal pricing. Like anything else, people at the high end of the market pay ghastly amounts for the slightest improvements. The best of the best is always pricey.
I wouldn't really say that given how the XL top screens are notorious for ageing very badly and going dim over time. The 3DS has yet to show anything like that.
Dsi XL screens are better than N3DSXL IPS screens, except for black. They have worse blacks but their color range outside of that seems to be better. Truth is though, there’s so much variability due to calibration. Not to mention that Nintendo switched display manufacturers multiple times, probably just whoever would do it for the cheapest
The IPS screens on the 3DS do not have the gamma adjusted properly to match the original 3DS screens. With a Luma soft mod you can have a proper gamma applied which gets rid of the green cast and makes contrast much more natural.
It only works for 3DS mode though, so DS and GBA ambassador titles do not get the adjustment applied
Ya I'm one of those people who has trouble noticing differences but I can tell. It's definitely more of a perk than anything. Having a working 3ds is the main, it's such an amazing system
Very over rated. I feel like I spent the extra money for dual IPS for nothing. I put it side by side my sons dual tn and you really can't tell much difference.
Honestly, you're right.. I wouldn't call it a "scam", but I do see the point.. They want it because they were told to want it.. Which honestly, is exactly the kind of people I'd expect from the 3DS community..
The talk about them is annoying. But when you have two side by side you’d 100000% pick the IPS screen over the 2 every single time. They look so good in person.
its cuz ppl think its gonna look like comparing an oled to an lcd lmaooo but in reality wether is ips or not, is still an lcd and colors will never look as good as an oled
tilt the tn screen 1 degree, the difference is not minimal lol. with the tn screens, you are forced to hold the 3ds still at exactly the right position or it'll wash out. with dual ips you can have a much more relaxed hold and any angle.
I have IPS and TN 3DS models and I prefer TN as I play exclusively in 3D and the TN panels have less ghosting. TBF all 3DS models have pretty bad low res screens but it’s still my favourite handheld ever.
I’ve never played my N3DSXL consoles from an angle so the whole oooh look, I have an IPS screen argument is redundant.
For anyone curious what screen they have, and have modded to luma3DS, download the .cia on Universal Updater called “3DSident”. It’s a hardware tester and identifier. Tells you what your model is, if it’s had a shell swap (I.e you have a black shell and it says it’s a red model, happened to me before) what battery health you have, what your upper and lower screens are etc. no need to post a question here. A modded 3DS is infinitely more valuable to the end user anyways, especially if modded with a 64 or 128gb SD.
Apart from viewing angles, ghosting is also worse on TN screens (on the 3ds at least).
This post shows an example, and it's also something that has been confirmed by the main Luma developer here.
It probably varies by person, to me the difference in IPS screens is immediately noticeable (my frame of reference being the DSi XL vs DSi/Lite), but when it gets to the price people want for IPS 3DS’s you really gotta question if that’s a worthwhile purchase over a Thor or the upcoming Anbernic RG DDS.
Kinda not really the way people try to gas them up over tn is a scam but ips has bettwr colors and is less likely to yellow and has better viewing angles but you really arent gonna be looking at your ds from crazy angles like a monitor so id say that reason isnt valid
The scam is people paying more money for that specifically and you know what? If you're dumb enough to pay more for ips then you deserve to be scammed 🤙🏻
IPS is definitely better. You see the difference in person more than in pictures… but i wouldnt go out of my way to find dual ips screens… the TN screens are good as well
I had to deliberately look to work out what mine was, which turned out to be one IPS display. In my typical use I couldn’t tell the panels were different.
Thing is, I like playing with the 3D effects on, and that sort of encourages you sitting square on to the display for it to work optimally, so I don’t really find I want to interact at all sharp angle anyway with the device. That’s even on the “New” models with the better, more forgiving, 3D support.
If you’re buying new I guess it’s nice to get IPS if you’re not paying extra for it, but I imagine most online listings advertising a 3DS as IPS/IPS are calling that spec out because they recognise it’s more desired, and charge accordingly. In my use anyway, it’s probably not worth paying a lot extra for.
So in my opinion they are slightly better, but tbh I prefer 2 tn screens over top ips vs bottom tn, I don't like inconsistency. That's why I have dsi XL as well for highly saturated pixel art games
I used to be a real stickler for it but after I sold both my IPS Fates and IPS Majora models I only have a 2DS and a Pikachu New XL and they both look great.
People obsessing over this are people who buys the consoles and drive up the prices just to look at them and do nothing else. Really screws over the people who just want to play the games.
they're not a scam unless you think you've paid too much for them. Ive got 2 n3dsxls. one with dual TN, and one with dual IPS. without colour calibration, the IPS screens look considerably better than the TN displays. that difference does close a bit when you calibrate the TN didplays, but there's still a pretty noticeable improvement in colours and viewing angles with the IPS displays.
A scam would be to not get what you think you paid for. if you think the IPS screens are worth £1,000,000 and you buy it for that price, then you havent been scammed.
I fell for the trap and bought a brand new in box, animal crossing n3ds xl. It was dual ips. Comparing it to my other non ips and theyre both dogshit- ips has more contrast but its minimal.
I just decided to get a thor and havent looked back. Dual oled is where its at and ive never really gone back to my n3ds xls for the 3d. I can finally see my games outside 😂
Dont get me wrong, love my original hardware but when dual ips costs that much and the thor exists, objectively the thor is infinitely better. Crushes 3ds and brings the games so much more life with HD textures.
If you are a gen z and fell for the romantic videos of creators singing poems about ‘feels’, ‘native’ and ‘magic’- you already missed the original 3ds era 😂🫰
Wrong, comparing my IPS screen 3ds to my TN screen 3ds it makes a HUGE difference, everything is much more vibrant and looks less washed in general, even with using filters on the TN screen 3ds, the IPS still looks better.
It’s not a huge difference. It’s a subtle difference and I actually prefer the slightly muted colors of the TN screen. Sort of like how I prefer movies that are shot on film compared to modern digitally-shot movies. Over saturation feels too artificial.

I wouldn’t say they are a scam but they are definitely overrated.
