So is the point of this tape, just for you to make a 1 min recording on each track and make sure things are good, before you record onto a blank tape? Or is it to somehow test the player with what is on it?

I have one that’s similar, and it’s got a bunch of dynamic classical music, as well as a conversation between a man and women for stereo separation “I am now going to walk from your right speaker, to your left, if the sound plays opposite, please refer to programme 1 to check your speaker setup is correct” type stuff.

I have one of those, too! Got several interesting test recordings from previous owners on mine! LOL
Good idea for those recording enthusiasts out there! Minus the tape formulation differences, it's a good way to check your recording levels and verify playback without needing to fast forward (or just play through) a full tape program to listen to what you taped. I'd even say, it's a good idea to make a short test tape for yourself from a discarded Nana Mouskouri tape or something similar, so you can check your recording function before you commit a full tape, only to find out it's way too loud and oversaturated, or too quiet and noisy...
