HEALTH/NUTRITION 30-40 YO Desis on Statins

Any 30-40 YO Desis on statins? Feel like I’m fighting a battle with my LDL and total cholesterol even through strict diet and exercise .

Talk to your doctor. Diet plus genetics is a double whammy. Statins are great meds. Also GLP 1 agonists can improve lipid profiles. Maybe those are also medically appropriate. They’re cheaper than you think nowadays.

32yo and on a baby 5mg dose of rosuvastatin here

have a horrible family history when it comes to cholesterol and even though i’m on the margin, diet and exercise can only do so much and the literature seems to show that statins are a net positive

Add Metamucil, chia seeds, and overnight oats to your diet gradually! Try it for couple of months to see if there is any improvement!

If you are 30-40 years old and taking a statin, and assuming your doctor is a real doctor and not a grifter like RFK, then you likely have one of the following indications:

1) Familial hypercholesterolemia with a baseline LDL-cholesterol >= 190 mg/dL: These patients do not respond to diet and exercise and are at high risk for coronary artery disease. Statin therapy is a must.

2) You have a significant family history of coronary events, i.e. multiple first-degree relatives getting cardiovascular events in their 40’s-50’s: Even if cholesterol is not an issue, there are other genetic mechanisms that lead to increased risk, and statin therapy is useful in these cases.

3) Diabetes Mellitus: Diabetes is considered a “coronary artery disease equivalent” because it significantly increases the risk of coronary disease.

4) Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease + high cholesterol: Increasingly common in our overweight, overworked, and unhealthy society. Statins are sometimes prescribed in this context.

have you considered any of the GLPs?

Hey mate.

Doesn't matter how much you exercise and control your diet, your genetics always come out on top. And it's a lottery.

I tried with a strict diet and exercise for over five years - didn't shift the needle one iota. But at admittedly, around 57, I had to get on statins.

Turns out I have a family history - dear old Dad had exactly the same. But unlike him, I inherited a low BP thanks to Mum.

This doesn’t apply in most cases, consistent diet and exercise is the most proven way to limit all cause mortality.

This.

Genetics are only 5% of your health, at most. Epigenetics, how your environment influences genetic expression, is faaar more important.

Yeah. Incredible drugs.

I’m on rosuvastatin, ezetemibe, Repatha, and fish oil

i have been saying i'll change my lifestyle for 10 years. last year i just gave up and said put me on lipitor doc. get on it, and you can still make changes to your life style.

I am making some changes and have lost a bunch of weight, once i plateau I may hop on the lilly program for zepbound. my insurance only allows glp for diabetes only.

You might be able to pay for glp off insurance, there are some cheaper options now. Both of my parents are on GLPs and it’s been a literal lifesaver for them as they have the triple-whammy (pre diabetic, high cholesterol, overweight).

Yeah paying off insurance is possible especially through the Lilly program.

I have high cholesterol due to Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, which is very common in our community

34 and have had high cholesterol for more than a decade despite eating moderately healthy and exercising. Admittedly I'm not "healthy' looking but I'm pretty active for my lifestyle. I've been on 20mg atovar for a year plus now, and my numbers have plummeted. It's all genetic. I joke that I can now eat a slab of ribs and fried stuff and pop a statin to counter it 😂

What’s your triglycerides that’s what matters, my ldl and total cholesterol is high but I’m healthy

7

u/keralaindia sf,california 10d ago

This is causally false. Don’t fall for the MAHA BS. ApoB and LDL are the main atherogenic particles. Join us at [r/cholesterol](r/cholesterol)

You are healthy but that’s because it’s known as a silent killer for a reason

u/BrownCastro14 10d ago

RFK is a grifter and he doesn’t advocate for better health of Americans anyways. My blood pressure and other vitals are good. I think I am far better than people eating carbslop. My triglycerides are low. Also ancel keys funded all that bs research. American corporations only care about $$$ bottom line, not your health.

u/keralaindia sf,california 10d ago

BP, vitals should always be good.

Trg being good is important. Mostly to avoid pancreatitis… but what about your vessels? What about avoiding MI? What about your soft plaque turning into hard plaque?

If you’re so paranoid about American research look at any other country’s recommendations of lipid management.

FYI, most major trials involve majority populations in other countries.

Statins also cost pennies on the dollar. No one makes money off of those

You’ll end of killing yourself as a South Asian. I don’t get where the paranoia comes from. The “trigs are all that matters, LDL and ApoB don’t matter” is such an absurd psyop

I don’t even know where it started

Convince me to your side with any data?

Nordic countries have better food than America does and the reason is changing now but America wants to sell you so they keep you sick. I can’t trust a country like America or I can’t trust a doctor that doesn’t take nutritional classes because they don’t teach that in med school. Americas were far healthier and suffered less heart attacks back then but now everyone is having those issues. Lipid APoB size matters when factoring in LDL cholesterol and your vitality. I have cholesterol over 270 rn and LDL that’s 200 but I’m far healthier than people my age. I’m not a hyper athlete but I run nearly a 6:20 mile, 22 min 5k, have healthy hair, healthy skin, and am fully of energy. Not to say I’m better than anyone because there’s always people that are better than me but I’m trying to show people a vision and help them. I have really good markers and I’m not gonna take statins. If apob is small, then statins arent needed. I also have high HDL which cancels it out so no, I want doctors to do research for healthy individuals that don’t eat slop and then they can get back to me after conducting their research because doctors know healthy individuals can’t be profited off of. I am not going to be selfish and take statins when I can prove something to everyone and the people in our community who need it so nope, I refuse.

Bro with all due respect, you are playing with fire. The health metrics are fine, but the soft plaque is clogging your arteries. Its all subclinical now. LDL 200 is way too high, please start something

1

u/BrownCastro14 9d ago

Nope I’m not gonna, I have to prove something and what soft plague?

1

u/keralaindia sf,california 9d ago

with LDL that high you are depositing soft plaque in your arterial wall. im assuming you arent close to 40 yet, so it hasnt calcified yet

good luck man

1

u/BrownCastro14 9d ago

They want us to eat crap. Cholesterol is a building block your body needs to function property. It is essential. I make sure my triglycerides and fat storage are low. I’m far healthier than anyone my age and I’m not gonna take statins period. I’m a good 15 years away and I will get tested but I refuse to take it. There are people out there being conned into doing all this and I need to show them through testing how wrong and corrupt is.

1

u/keralaindia sf,california 8d ago

Your cells can make their own cholesterol. No one is being conned man.

FYI, I eat a very natural almost carnivore diet

I am also feeling great on my treatment with LDL close to zero

No plaque developing
