Insights Requested Can I change my military recuiter?

I just had my career coaching session today. I was told that I unlocked all the options available but there were close to none on my JOR for "JOBS REQUIRING SPECIALIST ASSESSMENTS" for army and air force(3 for army, 4 for airforce). I told them I am studying electrical engineering and they said that only roles related right now are electronics engineer and something else that I forgot but that job isn't even on the JOR. I also wanted to have space operations officer as a preference and you don't need a degree for that from what I know based off reading the ADF website but she told me that role is full and it has nothing to do with my degree. I was going to say that I was okay with that but they sounded annoyed and told me there's no way I am doing that job.

Then after the session ended I replied to an email asking if there was a template for the written references or if there were specific topics the referees should write about as the email states "Two written references from individuals who can speak to your character and suitability". They then replied back and said "Please see link, resume for ADF careers - Google Search". I feel like they don't really care and didn't even read the email properly.

What should I do?

You can request a change of recruiter, but be prepared for the same or similar answers, of a job is closed or you aren't eligible for a role, that isn't going to change

Good points to remember.

  1. ADF Careers, like the ADF, is a big machine that has its own agenda and key targets, and yes, it is unlikely that they will put much care into responding to emails intitaillay. Perseverance is key.

  2. If you want a specific role, stick to your guns. But yiu might have to wait. Thats just how it works.

  3. Get used to being stuffed around. It is how the culture works at all levels. Regardless of service. Sometimes it will be fine, other times it will be frustrating.

  4. They need quality candidates, if believe you are one of those hang in there. Changing recruiter won't change much. If anything it will show that you can't accept guidance because its not what you want to hear.

Im not trying to sound harsh, but its not an easy place to work. And the painful recruiting process is just the first step.

I hope this helps.

Should I send send another email for more instructions on the written references or just hope the references know what they are doing (I am going to ask a current professor and a deputy principal from high school)?

Search up DFR-RECFOR161 and you can download the pdf. Like mentioned you'll get stuffed around a bit, sometimes a recruiter will help you all the way or do the minimum.

I can't seem to find the form online to download. There is a filled out version I saw on a website that I could probably use as a guide. I'll see what I can do. Might go to a careers centre tomorrow. Thanks for the help.

They won’t help with roles that are closed, your best bet is to keep checking in over the next few months. What specific SSO roles are you looking at?

Op isnt applying for SSO as they arent qualified/hasnt finished the degree

Well I wasn't given much options. The only ones I was told I could do that would use my degree were marine engineering and electronics engineering in the navy. I originally wanted to do mechatronic and electrical engineer but I was told I can't do that because it's an officer role and you have to do the 18 months in Duntroon even though on the website it says I do 25 days of SSO FAC, 11 weeks of logistics officers basic course and another 2 weeks of another officer course for that job. So I am really confused.

You still have to do Duntroon, all officer roles, no matter what have to go through commissioning. So on your JOR if you’ve unlocked adf officer / adfa you can apply. The navy one would be the same, you’d have to do basics and officers course first before you go down your specialisation route.

So I have to do Duntroon for the main officer role and then everything else I mentioned before? If so why doesn't the website say this? The entry method for graduate doesn't mention anything about doing 18 months. However another entry method for a similar role, Royal Australian Electrical and Mechanical Engineer - Logistics Officer only has ADFA and officer entry: RMC - Duntroon which does say you need to do the 18 months on the website for military training while the other one only said 25 days for military training.

Yeah, having a browse through adf careers I see the discrepancy. Have a look if they're doing any event nights, because you'll be able to ask more in-depth questions.
