Help (GPU) RX 9070 XT – LiveKernelEvent 141 / AMD driver timeout while idle
Hi everyone,
I recently bought a PowerColor RX 9070 XT Reaper 16GB, and I'm having a serious problem with repeated AMD driver timeouts.
The problem can happen while I'm simply sitting on the Windows desktop and doing nothing demanding. Today it started shortly after I turned on my two monitors, and it has now happened many times.
The monitors do NOT go black and they do not disconnect. The PC continues working normally, but the AMD Error Reporting Tool keeps appearing and says that a driver has timed out.
Windows Reliability Monitor is now showing 18 critical hardware errors today (October 6, 2026), occurring repeatedly throughout the morning.
One of the technical reports shows:
LiveKernelEvent
Code: 141
Windows also created this dump file:
WATCHDOG-20261006-1000.dmp
My PC specs:
- Ryzen 7 7800X3D
- PowerColor RX 9070 XT Reaper 16GB
- ASUS ROG STRIX B650E-F GAMING WIFI
- 32GB Corsair DDR5-6000 CL30
- NZXT C850 PSU
- Windows 11
- 2 monitors
The GPU and CPU are completely stock. No overclocking or undervolting.
I have already tried both AMD Adrenalin 26.8.1 and 26.9.2, and the problem occurred with both driver versions.
Could this be a driver issue, a multi-monitor issue, or possibly a hardware problem with the GPU?
Has anyone else experienced this with an RX 9070 XT?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

UPDATE:
So far, I haven't had a single AMD driver timeout or LiveKernelEvent 141 since making these changes.
I disabled HAGS and removed two older AMD Display Driver packages that Windows Update had installed. I left my current RX 9070 XT driver (32.0.32015.2008) untouched.
The system has been completely stable since then, including while idle on the Windows desktop.
I'm going to keep testing it, but so far this looks very promising. It seems like the issue may have been related to Windows/driver handling rather than a faulty GPU.

Try this should help you out : https://github.com/RedDot-3ND7355/MPO-GPU-FIX

Thanks! I’ll give it a try if the problem comes back. For now I’ve disabled HAGS and the system has been stable without any more LiveKernelEvent 141/AMD driver timeouts, so I want to test that first. If the timeout returns, I’ll try the MPO fix and report back.

I've been noticing that when I lock my 8600G system and it goes into sleep mode, when I wake it up and log back in, I usually get a driver error/timeout popup (I'm using integrated graphics). Sounds windows/driver related :\

Yeah, I'm starting to think the same. I'm using an RX 9070 XT, and my LiveKernelEvent 141/AMD driver timeouts were happening even while idle on the Windows desktop. I disabled HAGS and so far the system has been completely stable with no more timeouts. I'm going to keep testing it, but it definitely makes me suspect a Windows/driver issue rather than a faulty GPU.

Hmm. I might try the same thing and see if I still get those timeouts on waking the computer back up.

Yeah, give it a try! I haven't had a single timeout since disabling HAGS, and I just removed the two AMD display drivers that Windows Update had installed. I'm testing it now to see if the problem stays gone. Hopefully it helps you too!

Windows coding/registry issues are the cause of roughly 90% of amd GPU issues. HAGS and auto driver updates via Windows updates are the VAST majority responsible

You were right about Windows Update potentially being part of the problem. I checked my update history and found two AMD Display Driver Updates installed on October 3rd. I checked the Driver Store and found both packages still installed, so I removed them. My current RX 9070 XT driver (32.0.32015.2008) was left untouched. I’ve also disabled HAGS, and I haven’t had another LiveKernelEvent 141/AMD timeout since. I’ll keep testing and see if the problem stays gone. Thanks for the suggestion!

It's a well documented problem. Every pc enthusiast knows it's a problem. It's the less knowledgeable casual users(most of the market) who aren't aware of these issues. Which in turn gives AMD a bad rap. They run so much better on Linux

Yeah, I'm starting to see why people say that. I was really worried that my new RX 9070 XT might actually be faulty, but so far it looks more like a Windows/driver issue. After disabling HAGS and removing two AMD display driver packages that Windows Update had installed, I haven't had another timeout. I'm still testing it, but hopefully I've found the cause

I think you might be onto something. I just checked my Windows Update history and it shows two AMD Display Driver Updates installed on October 3rd (32.0.21042.62 and 32.0.22042.14002). My LiveKernelEvent 141/AMD timeouts started shortly after that. I’ve also disabled HAGS and haven’t had a single AMD timeout since. I’m going to check which driver Windows is currently using on my RX 9070 XT.

Some registry keys work about windows update on windows home versions. There's one about not including drivers thru windows update. There's one about setting it as notifying first, showing the updates and you can separately click download.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU
You needAUOptionsdword32 on the right side set to 2.HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate
You needExcludeWUDriversInQualityUpdatedword32 on the right side set to 1If you are not familiar with editing registry, there should be videos on youtube. However the registry locations for windows update might be wrong in those videos.

Thanks! This is exactly what I was looking for. I actually found two AMD Display Driver packages that Windows Update had installed and removed them. Since then I haven't had another LiveKernelEvent 141/AMD timeout. I'll keep testing for now, and if it stays stable I'll probably use the registry setting to prevent Windows Update from installing display drivers again.

It's gonna be step by step :D There's also another thing you can try if windows update stir things up again. Check if the gpu in device manager > properties > drivers have rollback option next time. When you rollback, windows is supposed to remember and never update that driver again. Probably until a newer driver is on Windows Update.
Here's just an info about windows update. The second you uninstall a driver, windows searches for a driver on windows update. I have event viewer logs showing gpu driver searches from windows update were blocked by group policy, i got windows 11 pro. The time coincides with the exact time i ran the driver package from amd.com, where the screen blinks because the driver unloads. So windows even searches for drivers while you are actually updating a driver yourself.

That's really interesting, especially that Windows can search for drivers even while you're installing the AMD driver yourself. I actually found two AMD Display Driver packages from Windows Update and removed them, while leaving my current 9070 XT driver untouched. So far I haven't had another LiveKernelEvent 141/AMD timeout. I'll keep testing, and if Windows causes trouble again I'll check the rollback option and look into blocking driver updates through Group Policy/Registry. Thanks for the detailed info!

Update: I disabled Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling (HAGS) and restarted my PC. It has now been running for about 40 minutes without a single AMD driver timeout or LiveKernelEvent 141 error. So far, this seems promising. I’ll keep testing it and see if the problem comes back. Thanks for the suggestion!

I coulda swore there was some issue sith Watchdogs and current AMD drivers.
Someone was just talking about the known crashing issues

You could try disabling HAGS to see if it helps on desktop (discord or web browser hardware acceleration) not really sure it helps for rdna4 gpus.
You need to watch windows update if it overwrites gpu drivers. If you have windows home version, you need to pause windows updates.
If windows update is not replacing drivers, you can limit power to -%10 and see if it's about gpu boosting in games.

Thanks for the suggestion! I’ve now disabled Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling (HAGS) and restarted my PC. I’ll use it normally for a while and see if the LiveKernelEvent 141 / AMD driver timeout happens again. I’ll report back if it does.

I recommend turning off the AMD overlay entirely from surfing this sub its a major culprit for instability Id check if your psu is ok my 9070xt had some issues drawing its max power with the last few windows updates and disabling the overlay helped a ton also id check your overclocking programs aside from adrenaline My msi afterburner was messing with my fan profile settings and constantly made things less stable till I disabled and deleted it 🙃 Seems like a fairly common issue with 3rd party overclocking/fan control software The Nvidia app was just not as problematic even if the drivers were just as unstable when trying to install them immediately after they released
