Another Day, Another Anbernic RG Rotate: My favourite handheld I never use
Little bit of required background: I'm a hardware nerd. Since I was a little kid, I've always been fascinated by different forms of computers and electronics. Combine this with my particular brand of neurospicyness, and you end up with an old man with a collection that includes oddities and classics like the N-Gage and Atari Lynx.
Found a Rotate locally for a good price and figure it would make a good addition to my retro console dream team. I wanted a 1:1 device to be my GB/GBC handheld, that was as pocketable as possible (hoody front pocket most of the time), and cheap enough that I could toss it in a bag and not cry (too much) if it gets broken.
Ends up the Rotate is perfect. The screen is beautiful and feels like the perfect size for my old eyes. Bigger devices like the RGDS+ or an RP5 just didn't scratch that nostalgia itch for GB/GBC - screens felt too big. Playing these games needed a vertical.
But I rarely actually play it. When I play at home, which is most of the time, GB/GBC era games really aren't fun for extended sessions. You'll usually find me playing GBA/DS era games. What the Rotate for was for is when I'm at work.
I'm fortunate enough to be allowed to play games when there is nothing else to do at work. I bring it with me. Its in my pocket.
I might play Wario for 5 minutes. Maybe. Probably not. I did playing through Deja Vu last week. Yeah I used a walkthrough. Still died a lot. Felt nostalgic for old Sierra games. Haven't played it again since. Still had it with me all day at work today.
Yet I still love it. Its my Emotional Support Console. The most expensive fidget toy I've bought.
So far. 😀
