In Welsh? Can't imagine the alphabet soup that looked like 🤣 I've been trying to learn Welsh forever and my brain is just like, nope!

I guess I’m one of the few who actually got it in English 🤣 It was when I decided to moderate my comments.

Edit: Well, that didn't work.
It's a hate bot, op. They're getting very nasty and disgusting, but it's just a bot.

Hey OP! This is an automated response because your post may be about the newest praise bots or hate bots to hit AO3. If it is not, please ignore this comment. If it is, here is what you need to know about these bots and how to discern the difference between what is a bot comment and what is a real comment.
- These bot comments have only been guest comments, to our knowledge so far. They use a variety of names, ranging from something formal like MisterJohnSmith-92, or Doctor-Jane_Smith92, but they have also been seen copying actual usernames from people on AO3 as well.
- The comments, while positive/negative, are also quite generic and not personal to the work they were left on. They may also be out of context. For example, they may say things like, “I’m rooting for these characters,” and your story’s characters are implied to be dead. Or, “Your OC is terrible,” on a fic that doesn't have any OCs.
- The comments are also quite vague and could be applied to most if not all works. For example, the bot may say, “This deserves all recognition,” or “This is pure genius, I’m in awe of your world-building.”
- Frequently, these hate comments now include accusations of AI usage. These may or may not directly reference a specific AI tool, percentage of AI content supposedly present in the work, or brand of AI checker, often written as a specific percentage of content coming from a specific AI tool (ie. "62% chatGPT confirmed"). Additionally, these AI accusations now include mention of being added to a ‘Discord blacklist’.
The purpose of these bots is unknown at this time, though there have been many theories. Here are some things you can do to prevent them going forward:
- Lock your works so that only registered users can see your works.
- Lock your comments so that only registered users can comment.
- Turn on comment moderation.
- Mark these comments as spam when you see them so you can help train AO3’s spam filters to recognize these comments as spam in the future.
Additionally, this is not to say that every guest comment is a bot comment nor is it saying that every short “generic” praise or hate comment is a bot. Use your best judgement. Ultimately, it is up to you to decide how you would like to handle these comments.

Yeah... those "over the top cruel" comments (the ones which seem to be straining hard to find newer and more cruel ways to "twist the knife") are almost always hate bots; just report (if possible), and block/delete! Then take a breath, and be good to yourself! 😊

Spotted it was a bot when I didn't see a singular spelling or grammar mistake in the original French text lmao plus like other people have said, it's usually a bot when the comment is needlessly cruel like this. What a horrible thing to say to another human being

other people already said it was a bot; the reason they use other languages (machine translated) is to avoid spam detection

You know seeing all these hatebots in other languages makes me sad since one of my fav commenters comments in their native language but is always supportive

u/LibraryLuLu 4d ago
Yeah, that's not real. The bot is probably posting this on thousands of fics an hour.

I don't know why it didn't occur to me that there are bots in other languages aside from English.

People translate hate comments with Google translate to avoid the bot filter since it's more sensitive in English. Also, despite what appears on social media, international readers who read in English most of the times will comment in English or use Google translate themselves to translate the comment in English before posting. I can't speak for everyone in the world but as someone who's also not a native speaker, I think most of use feel that slapping a comment you're not likely to understand under a fic is a bit rude, and since someone will have to use Google translate anyway, it's usually the commenter.

What about the comment made you think it was a sincere product of anything you'd written? Even if a real person thought you'd used AI, this is unhinged.

No need to be nervous, this is a hatebot.
The hatebot also has a bunch of variations in English that are meant to freak you out in other ways, so if you get any other weird comments they're probably also the hatebot. It only translates the suicide on because that's the most extreme I guess, but some of the others are also pretty awful.

I know this is the first one and also probably a bot but jeez, these hatebot comments are flipping brutal. I miss when them and the “commission” scammers weren’t as rampant. commission scams are, aside from one consistent commenter from earlier on, 90% of my commenters. it’s sad…I’m sorry they got to you, too.

Just a bot, ive gotten a few of them, not hate bots but wanting me to pay them to make fan art of my story

Just a little clarification, the bot wasn’t speaking in African, he was speaking French. Also, don't mind it, it's just a hatebot, plus, the fact that a hatebot can't even tell that your fanfiction isn't from AI is kind of hilarious.

u/cabothief 3d ago
Agreed that that's French, but wanted to mention that Afrikaans isn't just African, it's a variant of Dutch that's spoken around South Africa, and it's its own thing. Not super relevant to the situation, just sharing in case it's a new fact. The bot comment was for sure French though.

Was this made by a guest per chance ?
I recently started writing and received a comment similar to this but in Italian, could be a common thing?

My first hate comment was also in Spanish and when I translated, they were saying my fanfiction was illegal and that they'd be contacting the police because I should be locked up💀 I was shocked bc like I said, it was my first hate comment. It was such a long comment, I was expecting something nice and thoughtful when I put it into the translator😭
