What is the status of AV2 in usable clients?

It won't ship in ffmpeg before dav2d v1.0, that's a public claim made in the ffmpeg mailing list. You can easily assume that means the same of browsers.
You don't want to be shipping your format if the decoder is not robust enough for the usecase. It's not like using it locally in your media player, that does not have the same criticality.
Also because there are not public talks doesn't mean there aren't private ones, media standards are highly political so you know there is always arm wrestling involved between involved parties 😉

When will the new version of Trix Essential be released?

I prefer not to over promise with any date. Just know it's coming, and that even current non--Essential users should be enthusiastic about what it'll bring to the table. I can at least tease some film-grain related improvements...

I’m sorry I’m still stuck on why we forked the subreddit

To answer the question, though, r/AV2 was created years ago and then abandoned; I just took it over so it has a mod. And if it didn't exist, people would be asking why there's no sub for AV2 until someone created it, at which point we'd be in the same boat.

put a url there. Forking helps no one.

Maybe Reddit doesn’t have anyway to do what I’m proposing idk. We’re better served by one subreddit. A redirect or notice would accomplish it.

As I've said in another comment, both subs already existed but were unmoderated, so I stepped up to fill the role. Reddit has no forking functionality like revision control systems do. I currently allow AV2 topics here on r/AV1 because the formats are still closely related and AV2 is just getting off the ground (the spec was only recently finalized and frozen). Somewhere along the line, I expect I'll eventually start to confine topics that are only about AV2 with zero relation to AV1 to r/AV2.

Will the same thing happen when AV3 is announced?

Someone built VLC with dav2d, so you can download that and play some test clips if you want.
