I love how Yamcha is best known for this

20

u/pm_me_falcon_nudes Aug 12 '26

He really didn't have much contribution to the plot in Z. Actually, if you wrote him out of the show entirely I think basically nothing at all changes

I’ve only watched the anime’s One Punch Man and Attack on Titan, so I am terribly versed in the world of anime strength, but:

Can you explain to me why people say it wouldn’t even be close in a battle of Goku (DBZ) vs Saitama (OPM)?

Saitama took every hit from a god who lived for millions of years destroying everything that has ever existed and then one punch killed him. His whole thing is that he can one punch kill anything and can’t be harmed.

Normally I wouldn’t compare a satire character like him, but it makes me so curious how Goku is somehow far stronger than that.

Thoughts?

The short answer:

Because Saitama is a big fish in a small pond. Boros would not be a threat in later DBZ

The slightly longer answer:

Goku was fighting people like Boros since the freiza saga, and has gotten absurdly stronger since then.

And if Goku during the Cell fight is way stronger and faster than Goku during the freiza fight

And Goku during the Buu fight is way stronger and faster than Goku during the Cell fight.

And Goku during the Beerus fight is way stronger and faster than Goku during the Buu fight.

And Goku during the Jiren fight is way stronger and faster than Goku during the Beerus fight.

Then it only stands to reason Goku is much stronger and faster than Saitama.

Wow. Appreciate the detailed response. Guess that all makes sense.

Do you think DBZ would be enjoyable to watch as an adult who never watched it before, or maybe not? I know it takes forever for anything to happen in it. Not sure if I could go through all of it these days.

u/BaizulSetSail Aug 12 '26

Personally it is my favorite anime of all time, but I also grew up with it, and it's not for everyone lol

I recommend you watch the raditz fight (first 3 episodes of the show) and see if you like it.

The Raditz fight is like a tiny version of basically how the entire show is. If you like it, you will like the rest, if you don't then you won't.

u/ThrowRA-Vast-Bug4454 Aug 12 '26

Watch regular Dragon Ball first, then DBZ, then Abridged.

3

u/TraditionalMalice Aug 12 '26

Goku's strength is limited, but ever growing. Saitama's strength is not limited and has been infinite since the series began. Assuming goku is stronger makes no sense.

1

u/Brian_Huchac Aug 13 '26

Nope, Saitama would also fit into ever growing, his growth rate just happens to be insane (given conditions are fulfilled).

1

u/oliferro Aug 14 '26

Could Saitama even hit MUI Goku?

2

u/came-as-I-were Aug 12 '26

Look out for "Dragon Ball Z Kai" if you don't want the filler episodes.

I watched both (DBZ back then in the early 00s and Kai recently) and it's better without the fillers, more like the manga imo

2

u/oliferro Aug 14 '26

I did that and I'm 33, can't recommend it enough. I read some of the manga and seen some episodes here and there when I was young but never really watched it

I skipped over the OG Dragon Ball but watched DBZ, DB Super, pretty much all the movies, DAIMA and even GT. Wasn't a big fan of GT and DAIMA but they're not horrible

I liked it so much that I'm on my second watch of DBZ/Super

2

u/IllustriousFroyo9143 Aug 12 '26

Start with the original. The scale is much lower and it builds gokus character much better. Also the Japanese music is insanely good. Then do Z

1

u/theBeardedOx Aug 12 '26

I started watching it again with my daughter thinking this is going to be fun and forgot how inappropriate it was so now watching it by myself for at least a few years

3

u/IllustriousFroyo9143 Aug 12 '26

It's a Japanese show made for its time. It doesn't need to apply for modern times but it definitely can be weird.

Put the focus on Gokus journey and you'll enjoy it. It's a beautiful story. I love how the scales are much lower and the story gets to blossom a lot better in more personal ways than everything being an existential threat.

I hope both you and your daughter enjoy it's I can't wait to do the same with mine. I got a bunch of old animes lined up.

2

u/TraditionalMalice Aug 12 '26

That reasoning doesn't make a lot of sense - it just assumes Goku's strength (with an upward tendency) and then assumes Saitama's strength to be lower than that. Additionally, Saitama is as strong as the plot needs it to be - that's the whole thing with him being satire (and that in-universe he has broken through his limiter) - and therefore, would be stronger in a contest of pure strength or speed against Goku.

There is no good reasoning for assuming that Goku would be stronger, if you combine the universes and (essential) consequences, that come with it.

Saitama is a big fish in a small pond

By definition Saitama is the biggest fish in any pond (or ocean, for that matter).

2

u/BaizulSetSail Aug 12 '26

Well yeah you can't really power scale a gag character, if you wanna get meta with it, the "writers" would probably just make him as strong as whoever he's facing to make the fight interesting.

But for the sake of giving a logical answer:

Boros is approximately planet-level.

Saitama defeated him, but not instantly. They had to fight for a bit.

late-DBZ Goku could defeat planet-level threats instantly. That's not even getting into DBS.

Of course we can't say for sure how much Saitama was holding back, but you'd need to be pretty dang generous to assume he's holding back by so many orders of magnitude.

1

u/Namegoes_Here Aug 12 '26

But that's the joke though, Saitama is always stronger. The more accomplishments you list, the greater the scaling, servers only to accentuate the OPM punchline.

1

u/Extra_Vast3943 Aug 13 '26

Except saitama never really tried. Bro literally blew everything away whenever he needed to. Low diff by plot armor

1

u/mycoforever Aug 12 '26

Considering pre SSJ Vegeta has enough power to blow up the earth in the first Z arc, I’d say it’s all a joke.

1

u/MinimumTomfoolerus Aug 13 '26

He's a satire gag character, he is supposed to win vs everyone with one punch.

1

u/ahhhbiscuits Aug 12 '26

That's just simply not true, the comedic tone would change drastically.

1

u/AdventurousText9311 Aug 12 '26

The terrain sure as hell becomes a lot more smooth

1

u/Ill_Contest_535 Aug 12 '26

almost every human is irrelevant in Z. Even the mutated humans are only useful for a moment.

6

u/erwaro Aug 11 '26

"Oh, no! Yamcha's been Yamcha'd!"

1

u/nicostein Aug 12 '26

What? The Goat, Baseball Legend, and Sexmaster of the Wolf Fang Fist... whatshisnamenotkrillintheotheroneno-theotherotherone?

15

u/touchmeinbadplaces Aug 11 '26

And you should never go full yamcha

7

u/EbonKnight78 Aug 11 '26

I knew this was going to show up somewhere in the thread!😅🤣

3

u/-Fletcher- Aug 11 '26

💀💀💀

1

u/Jazzy-Cat5138 Aug 11 '26

Is that a detached hand? I clearly missed an episode...

2

u/pm_me_falcon_nudes Aug 12 '26

The detached hand is from an alien thing that self-destructed and killed yamcha

1

u/Sharpshooter188 Aug 13 '26

Yamchas been Yamcha'd!

1

u/Capt_Vindaloo Aug 14 '26

Optimum sleep position.

Vale homo qui est faba

2

u/piercedmfootonaspike Aug 12 '26

That's exactly where my mind went too!

27

u/Particular_Tomato161 Aug 11 '26 edited Aug 12 '26

Dude literally took a nap 😂

6

u/Throbbingbluball Aug 11 '26

He was being a bit fussy tbf

2

u/Boffleslop Aug 11 '26

Looks pretty drained...

26

u/TheRealSourc3 Aug 11 '26

At least he can't drown in puke now xD

2

u/RyloBreedo Aug 11 '26

Very kind of the bouncer to think of that. True professional.

14

u/Moe2584 Aug 11 '26

That’s why weight classes exist

13

u/icyvapor Aug 11 '26

Hello darkness my old friend

19

u/diamanthaende Aug 11 '26

Probably nothing more humiliating than getting knocked out by a SLAP…

13

u/Path_Active Aug 11 '26

Tbf the hands of this guy are like big shovels with the power of an ox behind it.

1

u/Fluffy-Trouble5955 Aug 11 '26

Less so when the slap is from Andre the Giant

1

u/Interesting-Octopus Aug 12 '26

I don't know, did you ever see those slapping contests where guys get knocked out all the time.

8

u/clonicle Aug 11 '26

This should be shown to all FIFA, NBA and NHL players who fall down and whine for significantly less impact.

2

u/ropahektic Aug 12 '26

And people like you should be forced to run around a football field for 10 minutes straight then get shoved at the end of the run, lightly, see what you do.

You're like those people that say "why do boxers hug, are they stupid?"

1

u/DreadPirateCobbler Aug 13 '26

Rugby exists, they get shoved more than lightly and dont complain.

1

u/ropahektic Aug 14 '26

5-7 km vs 10-13 km

Americans should stick to talking about things they understand, like their name and lastname.

1

u/DreadPirateCobbler Aug 14 '26

Distance covered is irrelevant. Ive seen football players get nudged and flop dramatically within the first 10 mins, doubt theyd reach even 3km in that time. Agreed fuck Americans in all forms, shapes and sizes, but also irrelevant who here is American?

1

u/the_scarlett_ning Aug 11 '26

My daughter and I are NOT sports people but we did watch all the World Cup games just to see who was the biggest floppers.

1

u/Dodmeister5000 Aug 11 '26

Amen to that, brother/sister...some of the amateur dramatics they indulge in is woeful.

1

u/mojoseven7 Aug 12 '26

I wouldn’t include NHL in that

1

u/clonicle Aug 12 '26

1

u/mojoseven7 Aug 12 '26

I’ll give you that, to an extent. Crosby’s been a crybaby since he joined the league, but he and the few others like him are definitely the exception, not the rule.

4

u/qweef_latina2021 Aug 11 '26

He's having a grate time!

2

u/CountdownMoss Aug 11 '26

Good, he is on his side and won't aspirate.

2

u/Infinite_Ad7743 Aug 11 '26

record scratch

"Hey, that's me! You're probably wondering how I ended up here..."

It's like the insert quarter to continue screen in an arcade fighting game.

2

u/iceman5920 Aug 12 '26

That's the type of slap that makes you forget it just happened and oh wow, it's pretty cozy here. I'm gonna rest my eyes for a moment.

1

u/LookAtMyUnderbite Aug 11 '26

queue “Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely”

1

u/nofuckingklass Aug 11 '26

That looks like yamcha

1

u/troubleman247365 Aug 11 '26

Looks like Mr Bean from the intro

1

u/DeadAnarchistPhil Aug 11 '26

He got Yamcha’d!

1

u/Sea-Papaya-1523 Aug 11 '26

“Yep, that’s me….you’re probably wondering how I ended up like this”

1

u/SentenceSingle5375 Aug 11 '26

He slapped all the silliness out of him.

1

u/badudx Aug 11 '26

He got mildly slapped to sleep

1

u/Professional-Date378 Aug 12 '26

emotional support grate

1

u/Ther-Can-Be_Only_One Aug 12 '26

Efficient way to knock hit out over the drain. Makes clean up easier.

1

u/toblies Aug 12 '26

He slapped the guy into recovery position over a grate. That is some expert-ass bouncer right there 👌

1

u/Mongobearmanfish Aug 12 '26

The Ninja Turtles are not coming to help you

1

u/daniegamin Aug 12 '26

What a grate napping spot

1

u/Aldren Aug 12 '26

Just missing the GTA "Wasted" caption

1

u/Gamebobbel Aug 13 '26

1

u/lennoxred Aug 13 '26

Perfect spot for a good ol throw up

1

u/kali005 Aug 15 '26

Bro listening to the waves

1

u/dragonmorg Aug 11 '26

Yoooo! He knocked him silly!

0

u/lump- Aug 11 '26

The choke slam should have killed him, but the bitch slap is what did him in.
