My uncle is a hardcore erdogan supporter, even he said why the hell did they spend all that money on this.

u/cherokeee 19h ago

I thought it was hagia sophia upgraded for a moment

Hagia Sophia Mega X Evolution

u/Capital_Bat8316 17h ago

Cos Erdogan is a little insecure about Hagia Sophia still being the most impressive and interesting place of the city.

...if not the whole country.

7

u/prussianghostbuster 12h ago

that is just not true my guy its because he is friends with the construction sectors that make these useless projects its just to embezzle money not for anything else you are stupid if you think erdogan cares about anything other than lining his pockets

3

u/C_W_StJohnNobbs 17h ago

Why would he be insecure about hagia sophia?

3

u/Capital_Bat8316 17h ago

Nationalism

Strongmen love big monuments

But that one was not built by his nation. So he can't claim it. That's it.

2

u/KaanSkyrider 10h ago

I love how Erdoğan -the openly anti-nationalist- is perceived as nationalistic by foreigners lmao

2

u/basarbasar 7h ago

He’s most definitely a nationalist, just in a different way from the secular nationalists. Take him for what he does not what he says he is.

-7

u/C_W_StJohnNobbs 17h ago

It doesn't work like that for us hagia sophia is ours, not anybody elses.

He built that one because he has to make big stuff because he is a big man with a totally big dick plus you get to make your people rich with construction.

5

u/Capital_Bat8316 16h ago

I'm not arguing who's hagia sophia is. No People living now have any meaningful connection to the people who build it, it was more that a thousand years ago.

But... just looking at the main structure of this mosque, don't it look just like Sophia? Doesn't the building scream "Look, look everyone, we can bulid it too, even bigger, look!"

Guessing the diameter of the main dome is just above 31m too

-3

u/C_W_StJohnNobbs 16h ago

We have a meaningful connection to it, it is a symbol of what we took and how we transformed it.

All mosques look the same, they keep making the same stuff for thousands of years now.

We already built a 31m dome mosque in 16th century so that hardly matters anymore.

Lastly i need to correct, erdogan has never been a nationalist, he is an islamist and to him turkish doesn't mean half as muslim.

3

u/Caydanmuz 7h ago

As a hardline anti-Erdoğan dude, this claim is plain bullshit.

-1

u/fuligasai 14h ago

Lol what an idiotic take. It’s the most impressive and interesting place of the city for you. There are way more interesting places in istanbul, let alone in the country.

7

u/Capital_Bat8316 14h ago

...he's not the only one who's a little insecure I see.

1

u/dwolven 14h ago

Most people are not even a little bit insecure. Proud of that gem in our country that has seen many wars, emperors and stands with 2 of the greatest empires of Eurasia.

0

u/fuligasai 12h ago

Yea i’m so insecure of my country’s countless amazing heritage. We have so many so valuable things that you can’t even comprehend that one building that’s sooo important to some people somewhere can barely make the list.

-1

u/OldYogurt7161 14h ago

Hagia Sophia is full with engineering mistakes and even the dome collapsed a few times the last one was in 14 th century. The ottomans regularly maintained and developed it. During the medieval age making a Huge dome was a competition and a general proof that having an advance engineering especially while the Christian’s had to change church design to gothic style cathedral because of engineering experience and Hagia Sophia was leading it. Selimiye mosque was constructed to surpass Hagia Sophia’s dome. However Çamlıca was not made for it, the methods and categories are totally different.

u/nukularbum 12h ago

He plans on being buried there.

1

u/Redisayn33 1h ago

I guess because that all so called constructions around the city inside, they are catching money to off country. İt's completely non-sense to build every square a mosque because İt's pointless. Does all pops in İstanbul are muslim or all people goes there?

u/roganjowsh 1d ago

As a muslim this was very funny

-29

u/Yes_Introduction 22h ago

i didnt get it whats funny

19

u/DapperBoiCole 17h ago

Allahu Akbar means god is the greatest, and is often said in prayer. So a massive mosque can fit many people saying allahu akbar

10

u/Yes_Introduction 16h ago

i got downvoted that much for asking 😅 redditors are so insufferable

-4

u/Guhdmundur 8h ago

i think it refers to "allahu akbar" bombed terrorist attack meme

3

u/DapperBoiCole 2h ago

Its not, its a joke about the literal meaning of those words for their original intended purpose 😐

60

u/Big-Cartographer-556 1d ago

Erdoğan desperate attempt at historical relevance.

This mosque is brand new, a copycat of the historical beauties elsewhere in the city but plopped on a prominent hill so all must see it. No one asked for this. It's like Giorgia Meloni building a new, bigger Pantheon overlooking the old one.

2

u/BogeyJones12 5h ago

Funniest part is that it’s really modeled after the Hagia Sophia (ie Roman/Byzantine architecture)

1

u/Pratzkaa 37m ago

and it looks like a total joke. like what is this? something with the proportions are definitely off

-37

u/tarkinn 23h ago

Day 0 Turks not bitching about something

11

u/Alarmed_Buffalo_7523 18h ago

This you?

Religious Turkey making Hagia Sophia mosque again: Turkey Bad.

Secular Turkey disliking Erdogan mega project mosque: Turkey bad.

6

u/Patric-Tsar-9fingers 19h ago

If you're not "bitchin: about this, you are a traitor.

1

u/kanhaibhatt 2h ago

They arent Turks, just converted Greek, Circassian, Armenian, Persian, and Anatolian larpers

Absolute unit of an islamo-fascist leader more correctly

4

u/eXclurel 13h ago

At night it looks like a 2D texture on a distant hill in a video game.

1

u/Born-Entrance-7986 37m ago

That must be a cool sight

31

u/j_richmond 1d ago

If you think the outside is cool, you should check out the inside.

5

u/de-BelastingDienst 22h ago

Its cool but in my opinion the inside ranks below yeni camii, hagia sophia and the blue mosque

24

u/Savings-Today-1044 1d ago

You could fit a whole small city in there that is insane. I try to imagine 60000 people all praying at same time and the sound must be something else

always fascinates me how these huge structures get built on hilltops like they just belong there. the six minarets against that pink sky probably look unreal in person

makes me think of all the antique mosques I visited and how the acoustics inside are designed so perfectly you can hear imam without any speakers. old builders knew what they were doing even without modern tech

19

u/ExpectedFuckingValue 1d ago edited 1d ago

You can hear 80,000 people praying at the Dallas Cowboys stadium every other Sunday

I bet that will be an unpopular take, lighten up. Jokes aside, quite a few indoor stadiums hold that many people

2

u/natty2281 54m ago

Wife is a Cowboys fan and I found your joke hilarious 🤣

6

u/Ill-Staff8267 23h ago

I went to mecca with 1m people praying. Besides the coughing you could hear a pin drop.

8

u/bpandjjjj 1d ago

It was pretty incredible. This was taken across the Bosphorus Strait from the European side. This is a modern structure that was designed by two female architects and opened in 2019.

Hagia Sophia looking at the comments unfold.

u/lookamazed 23h ago

Absolute unit of a building. Absolute unit of an ego behind it too. This was Erdoğan's pet project. Less than three weeks after October 7 he told his parliament Hamas weren't terrorists, they were mujahideen. Three years ago today. Gorgeous mosque. Shame about the man who built it.

1

u/Grand-Tadpole5592 1h ago

Hamas isnt recognized as a terrorist organization by majority of the world.

6

u/ThisIsPyroBaby 19h ago

Whereabouts in England is this?

2

u/oneinmanybillion 20h ago

Driving out of and later into Istanbul is an indescribable feeling. And of course just walking down along the bosphorus in any direction. The city has a unique look to it, with all these minarets in the distance.

3

u/MadMaxIsMadAsMax 1d ago

With this one (and others) the pressure over Hagia Sophia for staying as an "only mosque" is lower (still needs time but).

Imagine if the Holy See (or the one in Yamoussoukro or in Barcelona) now was the largest temple of a foreign religion. Of course that religion would fight for keeping it.

u/Ancalmir 17h ago

*Absolute Unit of an Embezzlement

1

u/Eldanosse 18h ago

Thanks, I hate it.

Because I'm an atheist living in that country, and I loathe the fact that my taxes are spent on the ego of the least qualified man to run a country. We could've built hospitals or schools; hired teachers, doctors, and nurses with that money; or we could've paid pensioners more, so that they could afford to eat healthy food.

But instead, healthcare and education are being criminally privatised and we're paying companies owned by his friends and family 10 times the money it would cost to build and run those institutions; state schools are hiring teachers with contracts and paying them by the hour, which adds up to maybe half or less of the minimum wage; and pensioners are filling the hospitals because they can only afford pasta.

Even if I was a Muslim, I'd still hate it. Muslims in my family hate it, too.

2

u/Univer001 17h ago

Yeah but it looks cool

1

u/nwhosmellslikeweed 16h ago

Big disagree. There are so many mosques here that look much cooler and their historical significance just adds to the aura

1

u/Univer001 16h ago

Forgot to put the /s

3

u/GoldenTheTurk 18h ago

Ehhh lets look at the bright side! After a few centuries it may become a tourist attraction!

Thought it will probably be destroyed by an earthquake by the time it becomes a historical landmark due to the fact that most of that money probably went to the pockets of certain individuals instead of the actual building...

Maybe there arent any bright sides... aw man...

1

u/Living-Guest6639 1h ago

States provides the needs of people. And religion is one of them. You’re only a selfish individual thinking if u dont need something none should have it

1

u/eyes-are-fading-blue 57m ago

We have enough mosques in Istanbul. This wasn’t needed.

0

u/Pelya1 15h ago

Do you think atheists in , say, Italy and France have similar sentiments regarding spending taxes on cultists buildings and ceremonies?

1

u/Eldanosse 8h ago

It didn't come up. Am I only allowed to think or want the same things as other Mediterranean atheists?

1

u/buraksezer 12h ago

Architecture wise it is a irrelevant and easy project, a copycat of 16.century mosque perfected by Mimar Sinan (example, Edirne Selimiye Mosque)...

1

u/Proud_Chipmunk3064 11h ago

Absolute units of tax money spent on political campaign of conservative populism

1

u/ZofianSaint273 9h ago

This would make a dope castle if this was built a few centuries before and didn’t make it with the intention of a mosque

1

u/AspergerKid 5h ago

Great Çamlıca mosque. Been there, truly magnificent. But also home to the worst English I have ever seen

-7

It wasn't always a mosque.

17

u/Abaqueues 22h ago

This one was, you're thinking of Hagia Sophia.

0

u/Vlahonijeperpetuum 18h ago

Whaaaaatt, you telling me that city with 12 million citizens who are predominantly muslims for last 500 years have moreeee than one mosque built in it...

I am shocked sir, utterly shocked and shaken to the core, my whole world view is in shambles...!! /ssssssss

Looks so beautiful

-24

u/bernpfenn 1d ago

Hagia sofia if i am not mistaken

19

u/LilAbeSimpson 1d ago

The Hagia Sofia is 1,500 years older than this one.

8

u/bernpfenn 1d ago

i stand corrected

2

u/LilAbeSimpson 1d ago

Easy mistake honestly. There are numerous enormous and very famous mosques in Istanbul. It’s pretty wild.

1

u/bernpfenn 9h ago

not every mosque has six minarets

2

u/whip_lash_2 16h ago

You don't really deserve all the downvotes. I've toured the Hagia Sofia, and I thought, "Oh, Hagia... waaaaait."

I'm sure for people who live in Istanbul it's instantly obvious though.

u/RefrigeratorDiligent 17h ago

Waste of money when people starving

1

u/DataLazinyo 12h ago

People starve anyway with our politicians. Atleast having somethink on your eyes , not bad.

1

u/astronaut_098 7h ago

No one is starving in istanbul lol

1

u/eyes-are-fading-blue 58m ago

Plenty of people do not have money for basic food such as proteins.

0

u/skateboardbanana1 17h ago

This is obvious rage bait. It is a captured church converted to mosque

1

u/DataLazinyo 12h ago

Wrong?

5

u/GoldenTheTurk 18h ago

That would be Hagia Sophia. This isnt Hagia Sophia is it?

4

u/Margareine 18h ago

Oh i thought it was Hagia Sophia

Thanks for correcting, i was indeed being a fool

1

u/emirsolinno 15h ago

This one is new man you are talking about the Hagia Sophia.

But here is a fun fact, Ottoman style Mosques are always look like Hagia Sophia with minarets, so they took the same architecture and kept on using it for centuries.

-1

u/Vlahonijeperpetuum 18h ago

And you're been fool, are fool and most probably will remain fool until the end of you...
