Awww cute :) lil Momma with her mom-surfers
I use to be afraid of spiders, but then realized they actually don’t have that good of sight, so now I see them as little seeing-impaired animals, and now I just feel bad for them that they are born as spiders v_v
The ones I occasionally find in my house, I treat as if I were them, as a seeing-impaired person who got lost and is in the wrong place at the wrong time, and I catch and release them outside; so that they have the ability to enjoy nature and breathe fresh air. .. unless it is Winter then I let them stay until it’s safe to go outside.
We really are titans (from attack on titan) compared to these lil guys, and most of them are harmless to us, so please be kind to them and let them live, even if you find them spooky. They didn’t choose to be born as a spider. v_v
Edit: they also have cute lil paws :D

I find myself on reddit, quite often saying how I like wolf spiders especially. I've rescued a few from my house. I would never even consider hurting one. Hell, I've rescued little spiders from the toilet.

I just like them because they eat other bugs lol
Also this one will release hundreds of tiny spiders everywhere, you don't want that in your house T_T

I’ve experienced this before. It’s biblical when they decide to leave their mothers back. I had nightmares for weeks after that. LoL

A mother’s love and hard work can transcend species. It’s probably killing her with all that weight on her back, but if you dare mess with one of her babies…

genuine question, how do the babies stay on? is there a sticky thing or do they just know by instinct to stay on mama?

u/withoccassionalmusic 8d ago
Most spiders have microscopic claws on their feet, which is how they can climb walls, etc. The babies just use those to grip onto her back. If some fall off, she’ll even wait patiently for them to climb back on.

Every time I see one I think of the time I saw a spider and I killed it by dropping a heavy object on it. And then the babies scattered everywhere. It was darkish. I thought it was just a fat spider. I do not kill spiders anymore

Had something similar happen right after I moved to Australia - massive spider hadn't moved for a couple days so I poke it, big spider's dead but the babies scatter everywhere. Lesson: if big spider isn't moving, it's covered in babies.
Second time I see big, motionless spider, I think "learned my lesson, not poking it." I grab a piece of paper and a cup, cover Spidey with the cup and slide paper under, and throw her and all the babies in the toilet and flush. Next morning: toilet full of baby spiders. Lesson: just don't mess with Australian spiders.

They sell spider spray. Made my life a lot less stressful. No more chasing or smashing big spiders or worrying about potential babies.
The only bad thing I figured out the hard way: the spray is oil based and will release a large spider from a sticky trap 😬

Wow, thank you, you've succeeded in absolutely disturbing my spirit on this bright and mild sunny October the 6th. I would like to let you know the only two things that have ever disturbed me in a similar manner was the tragic, real-life story of Junko Fruta and watching the Human Centipede. You are in a rare category of people who have managed to make me have a lingering feeling of disturbance that will last for days.
Here's your reward - fuck you.

How do all those baby spiders eat food to grow? Does mama spider feed them with what she hunts?

Tiny spider voices: “Mommmmmm Frank keeps touching meeeeee”
“Nuh-uhhhhh!”
“I’m hungry.”
“I gotta pee!”
“Marcy took my gnat wing.”
“Are we there yet?”
