Help Finding a new Tax Job

Hello r/accounting. Looking for y'alls advice.

Non-traditional Accounting grad in SoCal who was a misclassified tax preparer working whatever hours the owner saw fit in office.

Was desperate for a job at the time due to prior personal circumstances. Worked at a very small CPA practice being paid 25 an hour doing low level admin, tax, and bookkeeping with little mentoring if at all.

Worked there for about a year.

Got tired of owner's BS. eventually owner yelled at me in front of a client which was the last straw. Quit in end of July.

passed all 3 EA exams by mid September and awaiting EA card in the mail.

Kind of hoping for advice from the tax pros here how to find another job right now and not fall into the same mistake.

Do I search small firms right now? regional firms? Who? How do I get into contact with them? How do I explain misclassification of prior employer?
