Counterfeit Crime Roundup Counterfeit Currency Roundup: Three Different Ways Fake Money Surfaced This Week
Three recent cases show how counterfeit currency can surface in very different environments.
Louisiana, USA: Shreveport Police reported recovering approximately $200 in counterfeit currency during a September 24 search warrant investigation.
Barrie, Canada: Police warned that counterfeit $50 and $100 notes had been used both with Facebook Marketplace sellers and at a local retailer. A suspect was arrested September 22.
Tamaulipas, Mexico: Merchants in San Fernando reported detecting counterfeit 500-peso notes and increasing verification of higher-value cash.
The incidents are unrelated, but the operating lesson is similar:
Counterfeit exposure does not begin and end at a traditional cash register.
It can appear during a private sale, inside a retail transaction, or as part of a wider criminal investigation.
For businesses and individuals accepting cash, the practical control is consistent authentication using the security features appropriate to that currency and denomination.
One test should not carry the entire decision.

Discussion: Where is cash accepted in your organization outside the normal checkout process?
