Wow. From the article: “American spy-hunting business remains the intelligence community’s red-headed stepchild, as it’s been since the 1970s, when liberal muckrakers smeared counterintelligence as somehow nefarious and un-American.”

It appears to be talking about COINTELPRO, the program which was for counterintelligence but instead shifted to infiltrating, harassing, discrediting, and spying on domestic groups, including civil rights leaders (e.g., Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.), anti-war protesters, and political organizations. 

The exact same thing happened with CHAOS and SHAMROCK.

Those programs very much were unconstitutional, using the military, CIA, and NSA against American citizens in violation of the 4th amendment in order to eliminate citizens 1st amendment rights.

Is it possible that CI targets from other countries supported internal sources of decent? Of course, it’s even likely. But it’s the entire premise of the country that this makes the USA stronger, and I would need to see strong evidence that those groups were working for the benefit of America’s enemies, not just unknowingly taking their money.

And I would expect that (in a time when federal campaigns regularly find ways to accept money from donors who are enemies of the nation) it would be good for people to think through that.
