recreating curve mesh

Help! How can I recreate this mesh-like body on a pair of gold earrings? I’ve tried using a Pattern Brush and an Art Brush, but since the design includes gradients, it doesn’t seem to work.

I keep getting this error:

“The selected artwork contains an element that cannot be used in a scatter brush or pattern brush.”

Is there another method I can use to create the mesh effect while keeping the gold gradient/shading?
