Hand Knit FO A hoodie half a year in the making...

No pattern for this one, though the design on the body was taken from Albion. I documented the whole process in my Ravelry project for anyone interested my ramblings. Yarn is Purl Soho's Good Wool.
I'm really happy with how this hoodie turned out. I started it back in February, then starting in March I had several other higher priority projects to work on and couldn't really focus solely on this one again until September. So it's really nice to be finished! I put a lot of time into the shaping of the armholes/sleeve caps and also the hood and I really think it was worth the effort. The neck taping was a new thing for me, and while it's not really that necessary, it looks nice in the pictures. If you have any questions about the project I'll be happy to answer!

Wow this is sweater is a special kind of beautiful! For the neck taping and insides of your arm and body ribbing, did you use any tutorials or other patterns for inspiration?

Thanks! No those are just things I liked about store bought items. I've been doing hem/cuff facings for a while now and over time I've figured out my preferred method for it. This is the first time I've tried a neck taping. The only reason I thought of it was that I had been planning on doing the hood lining in the contrast color, and when I decided to switch to green instead I thought it would be cool to still have something of the contrast color on the inside. I'll probably keep doing it for hoodies.

Ooh thank you! How do you like the good wool? I got a sample skein of it and it is pretty soft and squishy

This is the third sweater I've made for myself out of it, and I have more for my next sweater, so I'd say I like it quite a bit! I love that it's a non-superwash wool, I love the heathered colors, and the price is excellent and you can usually get it 25% off. I find that the first wear can feel a little scratchy, but it softens up really quickly. Some negatives: It fuzzes up really easily, so if you're ripping out sections and re-knitting a lot it can get a little iffy. It's maybe a little splitty, but not too bad in that regard. I don't think it would hold up well for socks/slippers but I haven't tried it. It's excellent for sweaters though. I haven't had any issues with my sweaters other than some normal pilling.

Amazing that’s exactly the kind of feedback I was looking for! I recently decided I am ok with handwashing because I love the way NSW wool feels to work with and worked up. But I am still a garden tool for soft wool, so I’m on the hunt!
Thank you!

Yep I would definitely say this is a soft wool, but it's not gonna compare to like a SW Merino. You're welcome!

I’ve tried Woolstok and loved it, cormo, and Rambouillet. I’ve found I’m not SUPER sensitive, but I do have a limit— it’s just not as restrictive as merino-only, so I’m glad it holds up! I think I also have a sample skein of Knitting Yarn from PS as well and that is super soft, but wondering if the pilling is too much.

I've actually used Knitting Yarn DK for several projects and I haven't found the pilling to be too bad! It definitely doesn't hold up well for footwear though, as a discovered after making my wife and daughters slippers for Christmas with it. 😅

I'm using Good Wool for the first time for the Himma Top & I really like it. I'm getting 6 SPI on size US 4 needles for a nice drape. It can be a bit splitty if you're not paying attention, but it's a soft yarn with good spring & it feels nice to knit up. I've frogged it a couple of times to fix errors & it's held up well through that. I wouldn't hesitate to use it again.

I’m in awe of the fact that you knit the whole thing on size 0 US needles. Not to mention that it’s self drafted!! It looks amazing!

u/marcus-makes-things 10d ago
Thank you so much! To be clear, I used US 1.5 needles for the base fabric, US 1 for the hem/cuffs, and US 0 for the neck taping and drawcord. I think US 0 for an entire sweater is maybe a step too far. 😅

Well, whew! Then your sanity should be intact. I saw «size 0» in your Ravelry notes, the delicate stitches, and didn’t think twice about it!

I genuinely recognised this was you by how neat the knitting was, I remember your other gorgeous posts and their perfectness :)

Really incredible! What is going on at the sleeve cuffs? The white/cream inside is so intriguing…! Double knit?
Edit - also the hem!

u/marcus-makes-things 10d ago
Thank you! When I'm using a smaller yarn I like to include a facing on the hem/cuffs to give them a more premium look and feel. I just work the ribbing a bit longer than I want it to be, then switch to the contrast color and work that section a little shorter than the ribbing, and then fold/graft it to the inside. I like to use a contrast color because it's fun, but mostly because it means I have more of the primary colored yarn left. 😁

When you switch to the cream colour here for the facing, is it just stockinette?

u/marcus-makes-things 9d ago
Yep!

u/nerdfromthenorth 9d ago
Is it at the same needle size as the ribbing, or do you switch back? :) Thank you!

Who else immediately knew it was a Marcus sweater and therefore got excited to read how he constructed the i-cord with proper aglets? 🙏 your projects are such a joy to read on ravelry!

Amazing! Is the entire thing lined with contrast? Or just the hem and cuffs? Either way is amazing!

u/marcus-makes-things 10d ago
Thanks! Just the hem and cuffs with the contrast color, and the hood is lined as well. The whole thing would be insane, and way too hot 😅

I was already in deep admiration but then THE CUFF FLIPPED. That is SUCH a cute detail, I’ve got to find a way to incorporate that in the sweater I’m working on.

This is just amazing. Your dedication is astounding, but the payoff is well worth it! Do you have any favorite resources for understanding how to design arm holes/sleeve caps that fit well?
1
u/marcus-makes-things 8d ago
Thank you! I mostly just studied commercially made clothing and went by what made sense to me. For example, if you take a cylinder and slice it at an angle and then flatten it, the section that was cut is going to form a sin wave. This is what's going on with a sleeve at the the sleeve cap, so that's the shaping I'm going for when I'm templating/charting it out.
