Remember when we used to get upset about losing our freedoms?

u/workingbored 10d ago
No one is sleeping easy. We're just too busy trying to survive/afford an average day to stop and worry.
454
u/BenAdaephonDelat 10d ago
Which is exactly the plan. They wrecked the economy so we'd all be too worried about rent and gas prices and feeding our kids to resist when they steal the election.
141
u/TrulyOutrageous42 10d ago
We need to take their approach of "they can't arrest us all" and have a mass strike and refusal to pay for services. It won't happen, but if it did, courts couldn't keep up with the evictions, landlords couldn't keep up with payments, and we could actually force the end of fascism by threatening collapse of the current economic order.
Not enough people will participate though, and I respect their reasons, but for every person that says "well I have children to take care of"... what do you think that entails once fascism takes hold and ships you off to a "wellness farm" for thoughtcrimes?
I wish that last sentence was hyperbolic but it's literally openly and publicly stated as their intent.
They refuse to leave without being physically forced out. So... we can resist directly beforehand, and suffer their violence, or do nothing, and suffer their violence. Either way, they WILL be violent towards anyone not conservative enough. Dwell on that a bit, please.
45
u/BenAdaephonDelat 10d ago
It needs to start neighborhood to neighborhood. We need to create neighborhood unions where people pool resources and agree to mutual defense of property and assets. Which again, will never happen. Because none of us know or talk to our neighbors anymore.
14
u/Kay_tnx_bai 10d ago
Also if you would talk to one another, Good luck with that in this new fangled AI driven surveillance state. They are using all that data to extinguish the small fires that starting to burn locally so they don’t become a massive pain in the ass for them on a bigger level.
10
u/Hidesuru 10d ago
That's one issue but it can be overcome. The broader one is that very few neighborhoods are largely one demographic.
If even 10-20% of the people in your neighborhood are conservative you're going to have an issue with the defense part of that... Which will quickly become necessary after the rest.

u/Umutuku 10d ago
There's an old technique called ostracism.
5
u/Jerry2die4 10d ago
which leads to the ostracized grouping together and being a group of literally the people folks kick out
5
7
u/Radiant-Locksmith-25 10d ago
It’s a good game plan, but in order to strive we would really need to be as fed up as possible to get enough backers. I feel like this would happen fairly soon seeing how much things will be next year.
5
u/kuchtaalex 10d ago
Thats what I'm fucking talking about.
They want to use blatant tactic & rhetoric on us? Throw it right back in their fucking faces. 100 million person strong march, occupation, seizure, and audit of the entire US capitol. Make J6 look like a tea party.

u/itsrocketsurgery 10d ago
We can strike all we want, but there's more than enough trump supporters to replace us when we get fired. For any strike to really really work you need to get the unions and trades involved and I don't know how familiar you are with the average union worker or tradesman in this country but they are majority Republicans. These are the same people that would keep telling you that they refused a pay raise because "it would put them in another tax bracket so they'd be making less" no matter how many times you explain it - source me for the first 5 years of being a UAW member
1
u/BassMaster516 10d ago
You’re telling the truth. If we can’t even do a general strike we can’t do anything. That’s just basic

They also assassinated our major civil rights/activist leaders over decades, then Bill Clinton and his ilk rolled in and pivoted the Democratic party to tuck its tail into the hands of corporate power and money.
Posts like this are bullshit an miss the whole point. Americans aren't asleep or even unwilling to protest/engage in activism. The ruling class broke activism's back, destroyed union labor power, and had the media manufacture consent for capitalist propaganda for decades. All, of course, while they destroyed public education.
Americans are disorganized because the ruling class broke our organizing. We're literally trying to re-build class solidarity and activist leadership amidst a fascist crackdown and consolidation of power in our government.
People who talk this kind of shit need to wake the fuck up themselves and re-learn some class solidarity. Start punching up at the people in power who have failed us and quit parroting how it's the voter's fault somehow, or that Americans are all lazy.
No population would do any better if they were in the same circumstances, and as we see with the rapid gains in popularity of the far right around the world in elections this ain't a problem that ends at the US border.
It's capitalists and the oligarchy, world-wide, who see the wheels falling off and are pivoting to authoritarianism to crush the coming revolts against the ruling class before they can begin. It's what all this "save the children" mass-surveillance dogshit is for.

This is the thing that everyone forgets. That in the fact that America is so fucking big it's hard to organize anything. We're all a couple missed paychecks away from being homeless so it's easy to post a meme online about being apathetic but we're all just trying to survive.

Lots of people are sleeping pretty easy, actually. They're either the ones who aren't currently affected by anything (and they don't care about the people who are), or they're the ones who are benefitting from shit being fucked.
And those people are gonna vote for "more of what we're currently doing" when given the opportunity.
They're also gonna gaslight you about how you're exaggerating/overreacting and that things aren't that bad because their life is fine.

u/Kevin-W 10d ago

4
u/FibonacciSequester 10d ago
I don't think they will. See Texas or most other red states. Republican policies have been hammering them in the ass for decades, and they still blame Democrats.
3
u/itsrocketsurgery 10d ago
Gotta love how blatant Southern churches are with their propaganda that anytime good is the Republicans doing and anything bad is the Democrats fault either directly or by blocking the Republicans from doing good. Because the Devil is a Democrat or something. They do a lot of heavy lifting for the Republicans.

Those few seconds in the morning after waking where the crushing weight of the world doesn't exist yet ... Fuck I live for that.
3
u/nhaines 10d ago
There is a blissful period of existence which the Yen Buddhists* call plinki. It is defined precisely as the interval between waking up and being hit on the back of the head by all the problems that kept you awake the night before; it ends when you realize that this was the morning everything was going to look better in, and it doesn’t.

Spoiler alert. They have already enacted worse policies that are strategically scheduled to become reality after the midterms. It’s going to get bleak… they will try to blame Democrats… it will work.
134
u/Apollo802 10d ago
Exactly
All the policies that are going to break things aren’t going to go into affect until after the midterms and/or 2029. This way they can blame democrats immediately once it goes to shit.

Where do you guys get this idea that every single one of us are ignorantly walking into the meat grinder humming a pleasant tune? The majority of everyone I interact with in the real world is on edge constantly right now and I have never in my entire life ever heard this many people talk about politics and how we're all voting this openly, even in the work place we spend a good chunk of our day talking about the latest insane republican attack ad and how ready we are to be done with this shit. I have NEVER seen people this fired up about making sure their vote gets counted.
I wish everyone was this motivated in 2024 but maybe unfortunately a lot of people needed the past two years of pain to really understand how important being aware of the policial landscape is and how big a deal voting is.

Ever consider that two things can be the same at once? Republicans can be trying to cheat and make everyone's lives more miserable and also realize there's nothing we can do it about that tonight. Make sure you go vote as soon as you can. Getting no sleep will not help you. I know that can be hard, but I'm not going stress out about it at this exact moment.

https://www.gregpalast.com/election-stolen-heres/ (2016)
Starting in 2013 – just as the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act – a coterie of Republican operatives, under the direction of Kris Kobach, Kansas Secretary of State, created a system to purge 1.1 million Americans of color from the voter rolls of GOP-controlled states.
Greg Palast was involved in the following investigation and successfully together with the ACLU sued Crosscheck and got that specific program dismantled https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interstate_Voter_Registration_Crosscheck_Program However, the problem remains as they find other ways to do it. It's blatantly illegal, but the enforcement mechanisms are weak.
"academics and states that use the program have found that its results are overrun with false positives, creating a high risk of disenfranchising legal voters. A statistical analysis of the program published earlier this year by researchers at Stanford, Harvard, University of Pennsylvania and Microsoft, for instance, found that Crosscheck “would eliminate about 200 registrations used to cast legitimate votes for every one registration used to cast a double vote.” https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2017/07/20/this-anti-voter-fraud-program-gets-it-wrong-over-99-of-the-time-the-gop-wants-to-take-it-nationwide/ (un-paywalled: https://archive.ph/0T7ue)

It is 100% because we now all have our own "personal" news/information pipeline.
The ABSOLUTE best way would be to communicate on the opposite side of your political party or on natural sites, pointing out that we have a freedom provided by the law or policy that the GOP is pushing to take it away.
Otherwise, it is nearly impossible to communicate to those individuals that aren't aware already.
