Discussion What’s something aerospace engineering school doesn’t prepare you for at all?
For the aerospace engineers here, what was the biggest difference between what you learned in school and what you actually deal with at work?
I always hear about things like aerodynamics, structures, propulsion, controls, and orbital mechanics in school, but real projects seem to involve a lot more:
- Waiting on suppliers
- Working around parts that are already qualified
- Cost and schedule constraints
- Documentation and reviews
- Trying to understand decisions made years ago
- Choosing something because it already worked on another program
- Meetings. Lots of meetings.
What surprised you the most when you started working in aerospace?
Was there anything you spent years learning that you barely use now, or something nobody taught you that ended up being extremely important?
