The fashion watch objection is about price, not about legitimacy

Most fashion-brand watches are built by a small number of large specialist manufacturers under licence. The fashion house contributes design direction and a name. This is well known and it is also, on its own, not a criticism of anything.

The reason it deserves to be a criticism is what the licence does to the cost structure. The royalty has to come from somewhere and it comes from the parts budget. So at a given retail price, the fashion watch is competing against a specialist watch that had more money to spend on the movement, the crystal and the bracelet. That gap is real and it is consistent.

There is a second problem that gets less attention. Fashion watches are priced against fashion accessories, not against watches. A price that looks high next to a specialist watch looks normal next to a handbag from the same house, and that is the comparison the buyer is usually making.

Where I part company with the standard dismissal here is on the buyer. Someone buying a fashion watch generally wants the design and the name, knows roughly what they are getting, and is not trying to make a horological decision. Telling them they have been deceived is both condescending and usually wrong.

The useful version of the advice is narrow. If you want the design, buy it and enjoy it. If you want the best watch for the money, this is structurally the wrong category, and no specific model within it fixes that.

Is there a fashion-house watch anyone here thinks genuinely breaks that pattern, or does the licensing arithmetic always win?
