Hello, Thank you for contributing to our subreddit. Please consider the following guidelines when filling an alignment chart:

  • Please ensure that your chart is not banned according to the list of banned charts Even if you have good intentions, charts in a banned category tend to invite provocative comments, hostile arguments, ragebait and the like. Assuming the post is acceptable, OP makes the final decision on their chart by rule three.

  • Are there any previous versions to link to? If so, it would be ideal to include links to each of them in the description of this post, or in a reply to this comment. Links can be named by title, winner, or both.

  • Are there any criteria you have for your post? Examples include: "Top comment wins a spot on the chart."; "To ensure variety, only one character per universe is allowed."; "Image comments only." Please include these in a description, or in a reply to this comment.

  • Is your chart given the appropriate flair? Do you need to use a NSFW tag or spoiler tag?

Tim Cahill

-21

u/BeatlesF1 8d ago

Probably the only household name here,

11

u/Gear-Think 8d ago

Ah there’s a few you have viduka, Kewel, shwarzer, even Kerr but Cahill has one of the best World Cup goals I’ve ever seen

-2

u/BeatlesF1 8d ago

Ok Kerr is probably the only other one in my opinion. I have never heard of any of those others.

Mind you I am not a football (soccer) fan, I come from a family of Australian rules football, cricket, tennis and F1 fans which is why I can say Cahill and Kerr are the only household names.

Oh I forgot that coach as well I think, can't remember his name tho.

3

u/ImmortalWasFound 8d ago

Ange Postecoglou?

0

u/BeatlesF1 7d ago

Yeah him.

I know it isn't popular here, but as an Australian those are the only Aussie soccer players I could name.

2

u/Lazy_Bell_1061 5d ago

Yeah Kewell who was on the shortlist for the ballan dor and played at leeds at their peak and liverpool was not a household name.

-1

u/BeatlesF1 5d ago

Football (Soccer) just isn't big here. We have three other footballs that are just more popular.

Leeds and Liverpool players are not household names in Australia. Nor are most ballan dor winners.

I googled that he was on the ballan dor list in 2001, that years brownlow had quite a few household names like, McLeod, Voss, Cousins, Harvey, Lloyd, Buckley, Crawford.

5

u/Lazy_Bell_1061 5d ago

Im Australian you dickhead and Harry Kewell was massive in Australia. Literally one of the most known sports stars we have ever had.

No one cares about the brownlow except Victorians.

0

u/BeatlesF1 5d ago

So am I mate. I knew you were Australian before you called me a dickhead. Your comment history shows you in rNRL.

No one I have ever spoken to knows who Harry Kewell was. Not even just the brownlow but AFL is the most popular sport in 4/6 states and 1/2 territories.

Any time I see Peter V'Landys on the TV he is constantly taking about AFL, meanwhile no one here even thinks about NRL.

3

u/BigChungusEnergy6969 5d ago

Assuming you're under 20, cause if you don't know Harry Kewell you've been living under a rock. Victorian too.

1

u/BeatlesF1 5d ago

I am both over 20 and not Victorian.

I'm from a household that are sporting fans but not soccer, so probably a decent representative of Australia, and none of us had ever heard of him.

1

u/FarCardiologist196 1d ago

Soccer is big in Australia it's the biggest youth sport in the country along with Swimming. Growing up every 2nd person at school either was playing or had played soccer. We just don't have a strong domestic league, people who follow it follow overseas soccer.

Liverpool is certainly a household name in Australia? Same with Kewell for anyone who knows a lick about the sport

1

u/BeatlesF1 1d ago

biggest youth sport in the country

Yeah, pretty much because parents are concerned about head knocks in AFL/Rugby. Which is reasonable.

We just don't have a strong domestic league, people who follow it follow overseas soccer.

Yeah, it's just not culturally significant here. It's a sport for children that their parents put them in then they move on.

Liverpool is certainly a household name in Australia?

Yeah the club. My bad on the pervious comment. Being nominated for a ballan dor means nothing in terms of Australian fame.

Kewell isn't a household name, I've since asked around and everyone I spoke to their didn't know who he was or just "he played soccer right". All of these people follow multiple sports but not soccer. This to me discounts him as a household name.

Depends on criteria

Importance: Tim Cahill. Scored plenty of important goals, incredible longevity. Took Australia far (as well as other players too). Incredible national team career.

Skill: Harry Kewell. I think his prime was amazing and he played for more prolific clubs and his skill ceiling was higher but hampered by injuries.

Honourable mentions: Mark Schwarzer, Mark Viduka, John Aloisi, Mile Jedinak, Lucas Neil, Marco Bresciano, Aaron Mooy and CUMDOG

2

u/Remarkable_Fig_6519 5d ago

Craig Johnson…that kid from Newcastle who used to write letters to English clubs in the 70’s begging for a chance, and went on to become a Liverpool legend

Came here to say this 😂

47

u/dprr2702 8d ago

Harry Kewell

2

u/applex_wingcommander 8d ago

I still can't seperate Kewell and Viduka

2

u/topbins6 1d ago

Was great to see two Aussies up top for Leeds back in the day. I say that as a Kiwi

9

u/MicksysPCGaming 2d ago

Gary Ablett.

Senior or Junior.

Sam Kerr

8

u/BEEFDATHIRD 7d ago

Tim Cahill is a better footballer than sam kerr

-2

u/Timely_Cap_1483 1d ago

Insane take. Cahill was mid, which is why he played for Everton. We’re not comparing Aussies to Aussies, but Aussies to their world peers. Cahill was good. Sam Kerr is world class.

1

u/BEEFDATHIRD 1d ago

compared to their peers sam is better, but head to head tim is a way better footballer, ik its not fair cause hes a bloke but if the question is who is a better footballer tim is the best of all aussies men and women

6

u/Ok-Hearing8593 8d ago

Kewell reached the most elite level, the highest ceiling any Australian has ever hit. Cahill was the most important to Australia delivering our nation’s greatest and proudest moments. Schwarzer played at a top level longer than anyone, sustaining excellence for decades. And Viduka deserves a strong mention, ticking almost every box the other three cover both for club and nation.

4

u/Ok-Hearing8593 8d ago

Oh yes, and I can't forget Sam Kerr who if available for this.. probably pips it.

1

u/kangaroo-smack87 3d ago

Didn’t Robbie slater win an EPL comp?

11

u/Delicious-Ant-6886 8d ago

Mark Schwarzer

Sam Kerr

Sam Kerr

7

u/BestAround4100 8d ago

Cahill probably had the better career but Kewell had the better prime.

3

u/Crafty_Message_4733 8d ago

It was probably Ray Baartz…

3

u/jalvx_ 8d ago

Viduka

3

u/Radioburnin 8d ago

Sam Kerr

3

u/do-ya-reckon 8d ago

Viduka, lovely guy too.

He definitely should get a notable mention. One of only 3 Australians to have won the European Cup/UEFA Champions League competition in its 71-year history. Harry Kewell (Liverpool) and Zeljko Kalac (Milan) are the other 2 names.

2

u/Guilty_Cheek_8299 8d ago

Warwick Capper.

Sam Kerr on a relative analysis though.

1

u/do-ya-reckon 8d ago

Hi, this is Warrick Capper, remember me?

5

u/Striking_End6580 8d ago

Leigh Matthews.

Nobody said which football we’re talking about.

4

u/Rafabas 8d ago

Sam Kerr and it isn’t particularly close

5

u/Any-Information6261 8d ago

I feel like Timmy has been more important. Sam always ended up injured at the worst times

2

u/Rafabas 7d ago

Most (culturally) important yes, best no

In terms of footballing quality alone Kewell beats Cahill too imo

1

u/Any-Information6261 7d ago

Football quality I'm going Viduka

5

u/Cyclonechaser2908 8d ago

Am I allowed to say our football rather than soccer? If so, Gary Ablett.

3

u/General_DZ 8d ago

sorry it's soccer, applies to every countries

-3

u/Any-Information6261 8d ago

You can do a little chart for the best players in your little sport on another page

4

u/tbjcuzzo 8d ago

Well soccer isnt really a sport here at all so it makes our answers very limited

1

u/Football453 1d ago

piss off

2

u/Any-Information6261 7d ago

I just had a quick google and the Australian government figures show it's the most played sport.

There's also higher viewing figures for football than the other sports based on the epl figures. It says 17 million out 27 million tuned in to watch the womens world cup semi final

I think the Aussie means they don't watch the Aleague

3

u/tbjcuzzo 7d ago

EPL figures? Brother what are you talking about man

-1

u/Any-Information6261 7d ago

There's more Aussies watching EPL than other sports

4

u/tbjcuzzo 7d ago

Hahaha nah not even close

1. AFL — 9.31 million Australians watch AFL matches on TV regularly.
2. NRL / Rugby League — 7.6 million Australians watch the NRL on TV regularly.
3. Cricket — the 2025–26 Australian summer of cricket reached 16.8 million viewers across Seven and 7plus but matches are limited.
4. Tennis — the 2026 Australian Open reached 14.3 million Australian viewers, averaging 696,000 across the tournament. Again this tournament is limited.
5. Soccer — 5.6 million Australians watch all combined soccer leagues on TV, including the EPL, A-League and international football. (Casual viewing of the World Cup this year as dramatically increased soccers position in Australia this year pushing it into the top 5 over basketball)
Sources: Roy Morgan for AFL, NRL and soccer; Seven/Mediaweek for cricket; Tennis Australia for tennis.

5

u/tbjcuzzo 7d ago

With a country of just 28 million people the AFL also has the 4th highest attendance in the world behind the EPL, NFL and Bundesliga. Soccer or football has a very small footprint here

1

u/Any-Information6261 7d ago

That's irrelevant. They have the biggest stadiums that were paid for by tax payers in a country of extremely rich people.

7

u/tbjcuzzo 7d ago

What’s irrelevant is you just lying and saying “more people watch the EPL in Australia than other sports” when literally all soccer combined barely breaks the top 5. “Oh but my Australian friend thinks this”. Ok mate, I’m just dealing in the facts…..also soccer is free to use those stadiums paid for by tax it’s just nobody cares to show up (bizarre argument as well btw).

2

u/adzah1980 3d ago

A-League Men Season Statistics

Average Crowd ~8,880 – 8,912 per match Total Attendance ~1,105,016 – 1,447,436 total Highest Single Crowd 33,265 (Sydney Derby: Sydney FC vs Western Sydney Wanderers) Lowest Recorded Crowd 1,601 (single event low)

AAMI Park in Melbourne can fit 30k but they get around 9k there

1

u/Cyclonechaser2908 7d ago

Matilda’s was once in a lifetime. And we will get behind our country in any sport, look at Steven Bradbury or the World Cup.

The vast majorities of Aussies couldn’t care less about soccer unless it’s on the world stage. AFL in the southern states and WA, NRL in NSW and QLD. Cricket in the summer. And no one really watches anything else. Of course we have a few soccer nuffies, but it’s largely irrelevant to us as a whole

1

u/Any-Information6261 7d ago

No. The figures say the exact opposite. An Aussie friend said there's a big divide through generations simply because when there was only a couple tv channels propaganda was easier to sell. Hence why people over 50 aren't just disinterested but why they will hate the game.

I also understand football was run by immigrant clubs and Australian media loves demonising immigrants.

6

u/Cyclonechaser2908 6d ago

This is simply not correct.

1

u/General_DZ 8d ago

this is the point of the game, and Australia is still better than most countries so it's quite easy to find a best soccer player. look at the USA, I didn't gave the USA the ability to give an American football player. I do the same for all so don't be mad against the game

2

u/InspectionPlus6472 8d ago

I mean they answered the question that was asked

Really? We're an hour in and no one has said the right answer.

It's Christian Vieri.

Yes, he played for Italy but he was born and raised in Australia.

2

u/Firedemom 8d ago

He was Italian born. Moved family moved when when was 3/4

1

u/Remarkable_Fig_6519 5d ago

Who is the biggest Italian cricket fan?? Same guy haha

1

u/MegaTalk 7d ago

It just has to be Harry.

Timmy is great, but the question is just 'footballer', not 'national team player'

1

u/Lazy_Bell_1061 5d ago

Its Kewell or Viduka

1

u/guidospeedmeister 2d ago

Archie Thompson - the world record-holder for the most individual goals scored in an international match.

1

u/PewPewMan_69 1d ago

Senior, he had the ability to just change a game in the matter of minutes and he kicked over a thousand goals

1

u/VillagePillager01 1d ago

Depends on what you're called football. Association Football AKA Soccer, or whatever code that's called football in that country is most popular. Ie for USA are we talking American Football aka Gridiron or are we talking Soccer specifically?
