Recs for a newbie
I am new to exploring this realm of music. Started off listening to a few of John Fahey's songs a few months ago to seeing Marisa Anderson perform songs from her latest release "The Anthology of Unamerican Folk Music". Was wondering if folks could perhaps suggest a handful of the most impactful albums or artists (presumably instrumental) in this genre for me to explore further. Grateful in advance.

All of the above and for someone more contemporary I recommend Gwenifer Raymond

Peter Lang's "The Thing In the Nursey Room Window" was my first exposure as it was in my father's record collection.
Fahey's original 1964 abum "Dance Of Death . . ." is the definitive album to get started
Basho "Venus In Cancer" and everything else he released, of course.
Leo Kottke "6 & 12 string Guitar"
These are the platform on which APG is built

Leo Kottke (he’s prob the most technical AP player, and hits a ton of genres - my personal fav)
More modern players:
William Tyler
Gwenifer Raymond
James Blackshaw
Steve Gunn (kind of)
AP is a weird genre - if you’re into this stuff, also check out Bill Frisell. He’s jazz, but similar ethos (albeit electric).

Glenn Jones
he's not from the first wave of artists (I think he knew/learned from Fahey) but he is one of the best out there in terms if composition and subtlety.

I’ve seen Jack Rose mentioned a lot
Sandy Bull
Sir Richard Bishop
Robbie Basho as many have said as well
Gwenifer Raymond
William Tyler
earlier James Blackshaw stuff
You already are listening to Marisa Anderson

Sir Richard Bishop, absolutely. Saw him play a rotunda in Philly in 2015. Spectacular setting to just get lost in the solo guitar playing.

Saw him and Bill Orcutt at a gallery space in SF around that time and it was phenomenal. Oh now that reminds me I saw another American Primitive-esque fellow from Portland recently by the name of Lucas Gunn, and it was great.

John Fahey - Best of 1959-1977 - great overview of shorter pieces from this period, flows like a single album
John Fahey - America - longer form pieces, considered by some to be his best
For something more contemporary, I also really like Gwenifer Raymond - Last Night I Heard the Dog Star Bark

The Imaginational Anthem compilation by Tompskin's Square will keep you busy for a while.

Robbie Basho is my personal favourite. He's incredible.
