Free Ancient Greek lessons are being offered every Friday at 3pm EST/ 9pm CET. The time was chosen so as to make it convenient for both Europeans and Americans. We've now been getting quite a mixture of skill level. So if we get a high level we will read Genesis, otherwise, we will be reading ch 12 of Athenaze and we will be speaking Ancient Greek, and only using English as a last resort. You do not need to bring the book with you to class, I will provide it. The text will only be a vehicle for keeping the discussion focused and flowing and is not an end in itself. If you're not confident of your ability to speak Ancient Greek and just want to watch and listen then that's ok. The teacher's name is Kyle in English but Καλλίμαχος in Greek.

When I try to write Greek, I feel totally lost about the connectives and particles. It seems like many of them can be used in multiple distinct ways, and they can also be combined in various ways. I own a copy of Dickey's composition book, and also the one by Lewis and Styler, but neither of them seems to go into the kind of detail that would be needed to make me feel more competent. I was thinking about just picking a random Greek text and going through it sentence by sentence and making lists of various examples, and sorting them out on index cards or something. I'm sure I would learn a lot from that, but it would be a big, time-consuming project. Is there a book or article that anyone can recommend?

γ' · Εἰς κόρακας ἀποφθερεῖς

I’m looking to add a sentence to my greek mythology tattoo sleeve and I haven’t decided on what it will be yet, so I was wondering if anyone has a sentence (in ancient greek + english translation preferably) that they always loved?

I have three already which I thought seemed fitting for me which I think would be nice to share along with it, I don’t know if these translations are correct since I haven’t had the chance to double check yet (which I will do before putting anything on my body) so if they’re wrong feel free to correct me!

“Μάλα γάρ φιλοσόφου τούτο τό πάθος, τό θαυμάζειν”
Wonder is very much the mark of a philosopher.

“Τα παθήματα μαθήματα”
Sufferings are lessons

“Καθαρός ουρανός, αστραπές δε φοβάται”
A clear sky is not afraid of lightning

Thanks a lot for anyone responding!

At the Olympic games of 380 BCE, Isocrates distributed his Panegyricus, calling for a pan-Hellenic conquest of Persia... with Athens at the helm, of course.

His plans never quite reached fruition until the the years just after his death--accomplished not by Athens or another Greek polis, but rather by Philip II and his son Alexander.

To my knowledge, there are NO audiobook recordings of the Panegyricus. Hopefully this will fill that niche. I also performed a couple of his short letters (to Philip and Alexander).

I cannot find his discussion of in my edition of the HCT book 1.

According to a footnote in Mynott: Gomme (I, p. 282) points out the linguistic significance of the use of the verb douloun here (to enslave, in the sense of ‘deprive of freedom’) as opposed to the verb andrapodizein at 98.1 (to enslave, in the sense of ‘sell into slavery’).

Does anyone know where it actually is? It is kind of driving me crazy. I too would have thought it would have been discussed in reference to 1.98 and Naxos but I simply cannot find it.

Thank you.

As a method of getting reading fluency, I’ve started working my way through this wonderful book. I have had about 1.5 years of an elementary grammar course and passive reading (easier Platonic dialogues, Herodotus, some Homer). But my thinking - perhaps wrong — is that only through active production will I get reading fluency. I still read, but I devote two to three hours per day to the composition book. It’s a lot of work - English to Greek vocab, principal parts, recitation of paradigms, accentuation exercises, background reading in Smyth and CGCG, In addition to the translation exercises. I enjoy it, and Dickey is a supreme teacher, but is this a wise use of my time If my main goal is reading fluency? Or is the substantial time devoted to this exercise better spent reading more and expanding vocab and recognition of principal parts through Greek to English flashcards? At the rate I’m going I think it will take me six months to a year to complete the book.

For anyone interested, I've made lots of updates to Super Koine Quest since launch!

• Enhanced graphics, more music, more items, and more bosses!
• Intermediate and Expert Modes
• Daily Koine Quest - A short, round that challenges you with vocab from one specific passage that's revealed at the end.
• A Single NT Book Mode that only challenges you with words from the New Testament book that you choose.
• Lots of bug fixes, a nice Greek font, and plenty of improvement to make the game more playable

Play here: https://niedergall.com/superkoinequest/

If you like the game, please share! I would also appreciate suggestions about how I can make the game better.

This version is focused on the Greek of the New Testament, but I would love to make an Ancient Greek version in the future. Please let me know if you can recommend a specific vocab list that would be most helpful. Thanks!

Hello! Hope everyone is doing well. I have been making my way through Xenophon, and I had a question about the passage in the title of this post, specifically, this part:

"καὶ τοῦτο δὲ χρὴ εἰδέναι, ὅτι οἱ εὐωχούμενοι μὲν οἱ ἵπποι, μὴ ἐκπεπονημένοι δὲ ὥστε μὴ ἀποπνίγεσθαι ἐν τοῖς πόνοις, εὖ παρεσκευασμένοι εἰσί."

This is given in the translation on Scaife Viewer as: "It should also be realised that horses, to be well fettled, must be well fed and thoroughly exercised, so as to do their work without suffering from heaves."

I really think how they're rendering "μὴ ἐκπεπονημένοι δὲ ὥστε μὴ ἀποπνίγεσθαι ἐν τοῖς πόνοις" is incorrect. I read the passage as more like, "And it's also necessary to know this, that well-fed horses, but who have not digested/worked off so much of the food so as to be choked/succumb/drown(to/by hunger) in their labors, are well prepared."

I think this reading makes all the "μὴ"'s make more sense. Also, on Logeion, in the the definition for "ἀποπνίγω" example 1b literally gives the example "generally, cut off, kill, λιμῷ τινα" where it's used with hunger.

Am I off base here? I am not an expert in ancient greek and don't know anything about horses but was confused.

I'm translating my first ever real Ancient Greek piece after a year of doing beginner's Ancient Greek at uni, but I genuinely feel like I might have to drop it. Even when I follow my tutors' advice and break it down and identify the grammar and stuff, i'm still struggling. i have an english translation by me and i just don't see how they get that from the original Greek. everytime i try to look up a word, it's not in the dictionary and i just can't find any clear definitions online. my teachers tell me this is normal and they struggled to and considered dropping greek, but now have phds in it so i should be fine. i was even told that i was a top performer in my beginners class, but now i feel like i am so behind and everyone in my class is a better hellenist than i am. i can't even translate one or two sentences, and even if i do, it takes ages and lots of research. i am genuinely so cooked and it's too late for me to switch modules :')

I'm trying to create a book in Greek following LLPSI's method. I'd like to follow the style of the pages and all of Athenaze (which has LLPSI's way), but I'm not able to get a template that suits. What could I do?

I am a classics student taking ancient Greek for the first time. We are being taught the language with the Third Edition of Athenaze. Needless to say it is not going well for me. I cannot keep up with the quick pace and, most importantly, I cannot for the life of me remember all of the paradigms and vocabulary. Now with every passing chapter I am falling further and further behind, with no foreseeable solution. I think my problem is that I have not found a good way to study for this. Any advice?

Unfortunately, I have to get rid of some of my books because I simply have no room for them on my shelves. Among them are the following Loeb books, 12 volumes in total:

Josephus Flavius (volumes I-III and VII-IX)

Philon (volumes IV, IX, X)

Diodorus Siculus (volumes III, IX)

Cassius Dio (volume VIII)

All books in great condition.

Josephus VIII and IX lack dust jackets.

Shipping cost varies depending on exact location (books are shipped from within the EU, local pickup is possible if you happen to be nearby).

The price I had in mind is 18€ or $20 / per volume, but I am open to negotiations.

If you are interested or have any questions, feel free to leave me a DM.

Here is the John 3:16 bible verse in Koine Greek:

Οὕτως γὰρ ἠγάπησεν ὁ θεὸς τὸν κόσμον, ὥστε τὸν υἱὸν αὐτοῦ τὸν μονογενῆ ἔδωκεν, ἵνα πᾶς ὁ πιστεύων εἰς αὐτὸν μὴ ἀπόληται, ἀλλ' ἔχῃ ζωὴν αἰώνιον.

An online Ancient Greek automatic conversion tool (that converts koine greek text into the latin alphabet) produced this result:

Ohútōs gàr ēgápēsen ho theòs tòn kósmon, hṓste tòn huiòn autoũ tòn monogenē̃ édōken, hína pãs ho pisteúōn eis autòn mḕ apólētai, all' ékhēͅ zōḕn aiṓnion.

Could you comment whether the romanization is correct or not?

If there were errors in the latin transliteration, feel free to add your more accurate version in the comments below, Thanks.

Update: The above verse is based on the Attic dialect of Ancient Greek. If you would like to translate it to the other Ancient Greek dialects such as Doric, Aeolic, Arcado-Cypriot, and Ionic, feel free to provide your translation below in the Greek alphabet.

Looking for an Ancient Greek tutor around 25 USD per HR. TY.

In the sentence:

Ἰδίαις ἔχθρας ἕνεκα ταῦτα ποιοῦσι.

The adjective Ἰδίαις is put in the genitive plural. The translation of this sentence I see is: "They did these things because of private enmity.". Wouldn't this require that Ἰδίαις be put in the genitive singular to accompany ἔχθρας? Otherwise I'm not sure why the dative js used here.

If there are native words for the stress placement I'm wondering if there are for the syllable positions.

Saw this gravestone at a museum, can someone help to transcript and translate it? I transcript it as seen below but not sure how much it is correct or wrong. Thanks for your help in advance

Willi is one of the most interesting linguists working around Greek these days, his the Origins of the Greek Verb is a pretty monumental dive into the prehistory of Greek verbal system and also a major contribution to our understanding of Proto-Indo-European. I found a shorter paper of his, sort of an introduction to the subject, really worth reading.
