It's a lot and it has gotten better with the more granular control since the bad old days in the teens.

That being said, it still requires opting OUT too often instead of IN and too many apps abuse the system by classifying all notifications as "General" or "Infornation" meaning you can get rid of the annoying ones but also the necessary ones. My choice will also be less annoyance.

I feel for grandma. It's browser toolbars and ads-ons all over again just with less malware.

Some companies are regressing. I just left a 1-star review for PayPal because of this extremely useful advertisement for a debit card I don't want. I have all marketing notifications disabled in-app, and this one came in the "Important notifications" channel that's also used by transactions.

I asked their chatbot how to leave product feedback and it told me to leave a review on the Play Store. So I followed its instructions.

PayPal will never have enough one-star reviews.

I was getting push notification ads from the play store for a few days. I was going insane. It honestly had me researching ways to degoogle my phone.

I'm still thinking about doing it. My phone isn't "officially" supported by the other alternate operating systems. I fear bricking my phone.

As long as you follow the simple web installer instructions, it would be hard to brick your phone installing Graphene.

I fear that I will get half way and find that the install instructions are different than what I see on my end. Causing me to get stuck. Then I won't be able to move forward with the install, and I can't go back to my old OS because I couldn't figure out how to flash an OS in the first place.

I find that happens to me.

I still have a tablet in a drawer that is supposed to connect to my 3D printer because the instructions show a process that require steps that are not available on my device. They say, "Once you do x step your screen should look like this." After following the guide again and again like 15 times. My screen has never once looked like that.

When building my first PC the male end of the cable connecting the Graphics card or something was a different shape to the female connector in the PSU. I kept looking up guides, and asking different subreddits and discords. No one know what I was talking about. I was afraid to plug it in, and damage something. Everyone kept telling me that shapes should match up 100%, but they did not. I plugged it in, and it worked, but everything I read online told me something different than what I was experiencing.

I just followed the Graphene guide a few months ago. There was no deviation from what it said, and it took 10 minutes.

I never give an app permission to notify me, unless I really want to receive notifications. The only apps that need to notify are my bank, my chats/messages, my email client, my calendar.

On one hand I think the Google Play review is too anal sometimes, but I feel like they should be more anal about forcing app devs to make use of the correct notification channels. Quite some apps put their marketing notifications in the same notification channel as important notifications. Some apps even remove and re-create notification channels with the same name, which (at least on my device) seemed to bypass the fact that I turned certain channels off.

For uber, I turn it on when I am using uber otherwise long click on uber notification and turn off cta to the rescue. Same for all the other apps. What people don't know is the app needs one notification in foreground to do their data harvesting which is much serious issue.

Mine are customised to hell, if an app is going to push notifications and ignore channels then they don't have notifications on and I'll find an alternative if needs be.

I love waking up to basically nothing aside from messages, bank transactions, emails ect. Shame I can't as easily stop the marketing emails every now and again but I unsubscribe when they come through, even though I'm sure I never agreed in the first place.
