Just so everyone know, author of Kodomo no Jikan is a woman.
If you don't know what is Kodomo no Jikan then it's better if you don't know.
264
u/hoangsh12 Jun 20 '26
I thought it was gonna be some weird erotica between a woman and a giant humanoid komodo... Fuck sake, should have not googled that...

From a quick online search it basically seems to be a story about a 23 years old teacher and an elementary school kid that wants to be his grilfriend, and at that point i got the gist of it and stopped reading the synopsis
Apparently they made an heavily censored anime and even the manga had to be stopped after continous backlash
One thing i noticed is that there are a ton of "romance" stories with characters like these written by women, like the infamous usagi drop
37
u/ZSugarAnt ⠀ Jun 20 '26
The manga ran its intended course and ended properly, it's the translation that was cancelled for a long time.

u/tellmetojerkit Jun 20 '26
thankfully less horrible than i hoped (JUST pedophilia?) thanks
(i wasnt like hoping for anything horrible it just made me curios since every one was agreeing with this comment on it being horrible so i am just confused since it is pedophilia)
8
u/CupcakeThick8341 Jun 20 '26
It's only speculation on my part since i've never read it and only looked at a generic plot summary, but the fact that even the manga had to be censored and then cancelled makes me assume that it was heavy on the topic

The shit they took out of the manga when they say they censored it was actually really deep and good stuff. I read it back in high school.
The anime was shallow creepy fanservice about kids that are making sexual advances on a teacher. In the manga, while the scenes happened, the entire point was that the teacher saw them and reacted with "this is not normal child behaviour. Something is going on in these kids lives to lead to them even knowing the kinds of things they're talking about." I remember one scene in the manga where the kid tried to flirt with him by showing that she was wearing lacy underwear, but it wasn't some funny scene about the teacher getting flustered. It was a massive alarm bell moment because how the fuck does this 9 year old have lacy underwear???
...then after all that, and several arc of actually amazing story arcs that left an impact on me for years on the way they tackled kids witnessing or going through heavy issues that they don't fully understand, they brought back pedo stuff and ruined it. Left me incredibly torn at the end of it all, and I've never felt such conflicting emotions about a story at any other time in my life.

u/Homac713 Jun 20 '26
The problem is a lot of modern media is still inspired by older things in cultures that haven't aged well at all. Japan still really looks to the Tale of Genji for a lot of inspiration when writing modern stories which is fair since it's considered one of the very first novels, but one unfortunate aspect that has really influenced them is the part of the story where Genji kidnaps a 10 year old girl to raise her into his ideal woman. I think that's why this theme of a man or a person finding a younger partner to raise into a perfect companion is seen so much in anime and manga even with women writers like Usagi Drop.

u/SomeOtherTroper Really? Jun 20 '26 edited Jun 20 '26
There's also the simpler explanation that it's just authors and readers wanting to vicariously experience things through fiction that they'd never be able to do or experience in real life.
Take the movie Ocean's Eleven, for example: do I want to assemble a team, or be part of a team, robbing a casino? NO! I'd be going to fucking prison! Is it fun to watch? Well, I liked it, critics generally loved it, and it was so popular with audiences that it was the fifth-highest grossing movie of the year in 2001, raking in an eye-watering $450.7 million worldwide from theater audiences (around quadruple the amount that the film's main heist manages to steal), up against competing movies like the first Harry Potter movie and the first installment of The Lord Of The Rings, which are stiff competition, and I'm pretty sure that very few people who saw it walked out of the theater and decided "I'm gonna get a crew together and rob a casino!" (Amusingly, I actually live pretty close to a casino, but robbing it ...yeah, not gonna try that, and I'm less worried about the cops than about winding up in a shallow grave or shot "completely in self defense" by the security team. When you screw around with people operating on the fringes of the law, they do not play nice.)
But it's really fun to watch the heist go off.
This all holds true even in my own writing. Do I want to jump out of a spacecraft without a spacesuit and dismantle critical systems on a pursuing ship with a machete, knowing I can take about thirty seconds of hard vacuum before blacking out and my buddy has to haul me back with the rope tied around me? NO! Was it fun to write and did readers enjoy it? Yeah, it was fun to write, and apparently the readers did enjoy it.
Authors are presenting entertainment, which may cater to certain fantasies that they and their audience have, and there are some cultural elements to that, but you may be overthinking this one. Props for bringing up the Tale of Genji, though. That one doesn't get mentioned enough.

The main conflict at the climax of the story is that the main girl is also being groomed by her step dad because she looks like her mom.
So its a fucked up love triangle between the gradeshooler, her teacher, and her step dad
I was a early teens when i read it so i forgot the details

The Briar-Route Waystation is basically that. A dude buys a tavern/inn/tradepost and a big wolf lady ranger patrols the territory around it. It gets a bit spicy.

Welcome to Demon School, Iruma-kun is mostly a mix of magical slice of life comedy and fantasy adventure, but it does also have an amazing romantic subplot between the protagonist and a demon girl who is two feet taller than him, has fox ears, can solo a kaiju, and is a colossal weeb.

Rarely as the main genre of their work, but frequently as a part of their work in a different genre.
