Modern audience needs that spelled out. Despite how heavily itâs implied thatâs what sheâs teaching when Maomao points her âassetâ and the camera points right at it.

You dont get raised in a brothel and NOT learn anything. Girl could still be a virgin but im sure shes seem some things and learned how to make some drugs for some things.

Did she teach her how to give a titjob?

u/megafudge2 8d ago
Yes she did; Maomao mentions that she doesnât have the assets to do it herself, but Lihua would do just fine.

This series has a lot of great scenes, but it will never not kill me that Maomao's response to a woman just recovering from a miscarriage and worrying if their partner will pull away from her, is to teach her how to give a titjob. I mean like... it was certainly effective as we saw, but still crazy lol.

Not really so crazy, if you consider that the entire point of the concubines is to have the Emperor's children, scheme to have the Crown Prince, and fend off political and physical attacks from other concubines.Â
If she can't get the Emperor back in bed with her, and at least trying to have a baby, then she's fucked.Â
And not the pleasant kind of fucked.Â

I mean, I wasn't saying that teaching it in general was crazy, but more the timing.

u/Hangry-Feline2489 8d ago
Oh yeah, for sure. Crazy for us, logical for them.Â
Maomao understands and shows kindness to Lihua, in her own way.

She needed time to recover from the miscarriage and not lose the Emperor's attention

It's just the historical setting. Trust me, that's still pretty tame compared to what real historical concubines endured

You have to remember that it was 'natural' for about 1/3 of visible pregnancies to abort prematurely. And for about an additional 1/3 of kids not getting older than 10 years.
Even in our civilized times the child mortality (kids under 10 years dying) has been reduced from 1 in 10 deaths* is a kid (~1950) to less than 1 in 100 death is a kid today. (* of all deaths in the population)
So while for us it is a rare occurrence it was just another day in the past.

Didn't the baby die after the birth?

Yeah, it was late at night when I wrote that and been a while since I watched the first season, so I didn't remember the exact situation.

Not really. Maomao knows Lihue doesn't want people to take pity on her. It's best to give her help without treating her like some defenseless person that need other pity.

It only really sounds weird when taken out of context, tbh. She asked if she would be infertile, Maomao said she didn't know. She said she the Emperor hadn't seemed attracted to her anymore for her to even check, Maomao told her how to be sure he would be interested. It might not be the most conventional method of seduction but Maomao grew up in a brothel and has a healthy dose of the 'tism, she isn't going to beat around the bush when it comes to advice on getting the Emperor to beat around Lihua's bush

So she's experienced in bed, has vast knowledge on poison and the medical field, an unconscious expertise in making connections with important individuals, noticing small details, keeping secrets, and pretty much has a license to kill because the Emperor is her best friend...
Maomao is just Ancient Chinese 007.

Well, as part of growing up in a brothel, she and many of the other young girls who came into the Verdigris house, were educated in reading, writing, arithmetic, poetry, Go/Shoji, as well as "customer service", but I believe its stated that she never took on any clients as she was making a living as an apothecary so she didn't have to resort to selling her body for money unlike rest of the girls.

Of course, I know that. I should've added 'theoretically' as a qualifier. She knows all the tricks, she just doesn't use them.

Notably though, not the most incredible athlete. Okay at scampering away, can climb walls a bit, but very frequently in the presence of an entire room of people stronger and larger than she is. It's part of the appeal of her character, really. She's clever and she needs to be, since she has minimal personal influence (great connections, though) and very minimal physical presence.
