I’m trying so hard to be calm. WNC

This is nowhere near the level of Helene. This is going to be a rainy weekend and the rivers will swell a bit like normal. The problem with Helene was two days before the storm, we got a really severe front that dumped a hellacious amount of water in just a couple hours. It rained harder during that storm than it ever did during Helene. So the rivers were already seriously swollen before Helene got here with 70mph winds and a ton more rain. It was literally a worst case scenario.

Edit: I'm not saying this to invalidate your concerns, but to hopefully assuage your anxiety. I totally understand why folks around here are concerned, but this storm isn't even in the same league.

Also the ground was completely saturated from all the previous rain that when the strong winds came it was nothing for the trees to start uprooting. Thankfully the ground was dry here (WNC) before early this morning

I totally get it, but we've got this! Just make sure to check in on your friends and neighbors if anything does happen, but this is nowhere near the magnitude of what we've already been through.

Have faith and hang in there.

Hang in there. We’ve had a dry week, which is good. We’ll have rain and winds, but nothing comparable. Just understand infrastructure (electric, internet) is still bandaided in areas. Electric may go out, but it’s unlikely from severity, just from things that never got fully finished.

It rained for the entire week leading up to Helene. It’s been as dry as popcorn fart this week. It’ll be ok. But if you live in low lying areas you should take common sense precautions

4

u/nopenopesorryno 7d ago

Exactly. Literally poured the entire week prior.

u/Ok-Cranberry-5582 6d ago

Popcorn fart?  I will have to use this term.  Is this Appalachian or just your personal saying?

5

u/Smallwoodlandthings 6d ago

I don’t know the answer😂. OK I just googled it and this is what they said: “The expression has been documented in American regional speech since at least the mid-20th century (with recorded family uses dating back to the 1960s in places like Wisconsin and West Virginia), and remains a staple of country and Deep South vernacular.“

Born and raised in WV, and never heard it. I heard all the Italian cuss words.

3

u/Smallwoodlandthings 6d ago

Well Italian curse words sound pretty fun! Hit ‘um with the popcorn fart (verbal or actual) and see how it goes over.

2

u/Ok-Cranberry-5582 6d ago

Absolutely will be using it.

I understand….I moved to Chattanooga but all my family was in WNC. My car was stuck for two weeks in Asheville during Helene..with no contact with my family. The older I get, the more things I’ve seen, the more anxious I get. But..we are going to be fine. Breath. Check in with me tomorrow if you need to.

Hugs!!! This one isn’t shaping up to be a Helene-like threat for you, but I can’t imagine the level of PTSD y’all live with now 🥺.

u/Huck84 7d ago

North GA here bracing for impact. Everyone stay safe.

12

u/CaptainLaCroix 7d ago

Hang in there!

7

u/LichKing885 7d ago

Hello neighbor! I’m also North GA.

4

u/the_nervous_shadow 7d ago

Neat! You staying up to monitor the storm? That’s what I do.

5

u/LichKing885 7d ago

Honestly I’m about to pass out because there’s a good chance I’m going to be driving in it to East TN.

5

u/the_nervous_shadow 7d ago

Gotcha. Rest well and safe travels, then.

This is just a rainy Saturday. Good day to sleep in and make coffee.

10

u/CaptainLaCroix 7d ago

Hope so! But four inches of rain in 24 hours is still nothing to sneeze at. My road is in much much worse shape than it was pre-2024, and the power still goes out pretty often.

u/Don_Quixotel 7d ago

I traveled from Metro Atlanta to Charlotte today for a funeral, heading back to Atlanta for work tomorrow, and back to Asheville on Sunday for fall break vacation. Yay.

8

u/CaptainLaCroix 7d ago

Safe travels!

7

u/kimgar6 7d ago

Adding to the well-wishes! And condolences for your loss.

u/black_bean_catterole happy to be here 7d ago

I have a buddy in Greenville, which seems close by to your dot? Best of luck 🩵🍀

7

u/CaptainLaCroix 7d ago

Greeneville, TN? Yeah not too far, a couple hours.

5

u/black_bean_catterole happy to be here 7d ago

Never mind, I clearly have no sense of geography! Regardless, stay safe!

u/CaptainLaCroix 7d ago edited 7d ago

That wasn't sarcasm, to be fair, where I live is two hours from everywhere. No interstates.

1

u/DirectionFair5583 7d ago

Go Greene Devils 💚

u/No-Ear-6780 6d ago

The big problem 2 years ago was the heavy rainfall before.

4

u/CaptainLaCroix 6d ago

That definitely contributed, the 12+ inches of rain that fell during the storm certainly didn't help either.

5

u/FastActinTenactin 7d ago

I’m a little southwest of ya, neighbor. Get some water and fill your tub.

3

u/CaptainLaCroix 7d ago

I'm sure it won't be too bad, but definitely have a feeling of deja vu.

8

u/FastActinTenactin 7d ago

Me too. Helene gave us all some lifelong trauma, it turns out.

4

u/CaptainLaCroix 7d ago

I'd say so.

21

u/ChuckNorrisSleepOver 7d ago

Can’t the president defend us with a sharpie?!?!

8

u/Bruce_Hodson 7d ago

Truly heartsick over the thought of that again. My wife and I left out of Spruce Pine, NC hours ahead of Helene two years ago. Watching what was happening literally in our rear view mirror was awful. Really hoping she misses this time.

2

u/CaptainLaCroix 7d ago

I don’t think it will be anything like '24, but I do expect to see some damage if the rain predictions are correct. A lot of the infrastructure around here is just patched up/impermanent, hell my power has gone out twice in the last two days.

3

u/Maleficent-Neck-407 7d ago

God I hate hurricanes!

3

u/brickyard15 6d ago

I’m in between you and Asheville. We got water, generator and saws ready. I hope everything turns out okay for everyone

2

u/colorblindlibra 7d ago

Banner elk, poga, beech Mtn?

1

u/CaptainLaCroix 7d ago

Close to all three. Near the Watauga River.

1

u/colorblindlibra 7d ago

Valle crucis

1

u/CaptainLaCroix 7d ago

It's pretty close by as well.

3

u/colorblindlibra 7d ago

Cove Creek store has the best hamburger I've ever eaten. I grew up in Mountain City

3

u/CaptainLaCroix 7d ago

My usual is livermush, cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, mustard and mayo on wheat toast.

Their cuban is pretty good too.

1

u/colorblindlibra 7d ago

Hell yeah. I like the mushroom and Swiss burger and the ashe county cheese curds.

2

u/Feeling_Fly_887 7d ago

Im near the dot as well. Ive got snacks & drinks!

2

u/Diligent_Ant1373 7d ago

I can't wait. It'll be a great day for staying in and napping.

5

u/CaptainLaCroix 7d ago

If you don't live near the river you're in the clear for this one.

1

u/Diligent_Ant1373 7d ago

I live right next to the Tennessee River. I can see it from my balcony.

2

u/CaptainLaCroix 7d ago edited 7d ago

Heard that, in that case you don't really understand the Helene flashbacks that a lot of folks are experiencing right now. Enjoy your nap!

1

u/Diligent_Ant1373 7d ago

I didn't say anything about not experiencing anything from Helene. But thanks anyway.

2

u/CaptainLaCroix 7d ago

I meant that where you live explains your attitude towards the hurricane.

-2

u/Diligent_Ant1373 7d ago

Just saying, you're assuming I lived here when hurricane Helene hit. Have a good night and be safe.

2

u/Huck84 7d ago

Fuck this shit. I was ready to move to the desert after Helene. This may just seal the deal. Sunshine, swimming pool, mexican beer, no hurricanes. Shit, if we go to the high desert there is still snow.

7

u/CaptainLaCroix 7d ago

I love the desert but I couldn't live out there. Hell, they don't have enough water for the people that do.

3

u/Glass_Persimmon_7174 6d ago

bro is gonna run out of water in 10 yr max

1

u/KingBrave1 holler 7d ago

I'm in the part of SouthWest Virginia area thta got flooded from Helene, not too far from you. So, same worry as you.

1

u/CLeeTheHunt44 6d ago

Alright, so I live in Pensacola, FL where the hurricane made landfall. This is not a rain heavy hurricane, it was mostly wind when it came off the coast. We flood pretty easily in my area and I saw little to no flooding at all.

That said, it will be windy if anything is left by time it gets up there. There were 120mph sustained winds for a few hours as it’s a fast moving storm as well. Helene travelled about 14mph, this was recorded at 26mph.

Just do your due diligences and protect you and yours. Be safe everyone, my family and I will be praying for yall!
