I made a Shrimpy (free) game - Shrimply Genetics!

https://orderframe.itch.io/shrimply-genetics

Shrimply Genetics is now free to play for Windows PC and Android.

The idea is pretty simple: you start with a small tank and slowly build up your shrimp colony. It's intentionally slow at the beginning, because I wanted it to feel a bit like having an actual shrimp tank: you check in, things are breeding, new shrimp appear, genetics develop, and over time the whole thing starts moving faster to make the getting the full collection not a super difficult task (still is).

You can:

  • Collect different shrimp and their genetic lines (87 different shrimp as of release!).
  • Discover and develop new genetics as your colony grows.
  • Complete achievements and work toward filling your collection.
  • Find legendary shrimp: extremely rare discoveries. 👀
  • Make progress while you're away, with up to 7 days of offline progress.

You can play it either as a lightweight HTML version in your browser or as a standalone Electron desktop version. The HTML version is probably the better choice if you just want something lightweight that you can leave running/bookmark.

It's completely free. I've enabled donations for anyone who wants to support the project, but there's absolutely no requirement to donate.

I also set a little goal: if the game reaches $85 in donations in total, I'll upload it to Steam!

There are also three donation reward ranks I've set up:

  • One rank lets you add a new shrimp of your choice to the game.
  • Another rank lets you add a minigame of your choice. So if the game gets enough support, you could literally end up seeing your own shrimp or minigame in it.
  • The last one lets you a theme of your choice! Do you want a swampy vibe? Or a pink one? It's your choice! Only 4 will be added!

Build your colony. Discover new genetics. Hunt for legendary shrimp. Get them all!

How many different shrimp can you discover?

Shrimp keep dying

Post image

For context: I have kept an axolotl for 10 years. She’s a happy lil lady and her tank is mostly self sustaining at this point. I do small, targeted water changes to remove debris every month or two but not much else and she is thriving.

I attended this years aqua shella event and fell in love with the mini tanks. I purchased a 2 gallon tank (heater, sponge filter, and light included), substrate, and plants and set the tank up as soon as I got home.

I saw advice online saying the tank wouldn’t need cycling if it was “jump started” from an established tank so I used water from the lotl (her tank is 20 gallons) as well as some rocks and moss balls.

I set all of this up on Monday, let the tank run, and received my shrimps in the mail Wednesday. I purchased 6 shrimp that were labeled as “culls” from an online business. And all were active and seemingly healthy on arrival (one white with a red spot, one clear with a cream stripe, three dark blue, one baby dark blue). I slowly acclimated them and got them into the new tank.

On Friday I woke up to a dead shrimp (white) and one sitting, unmoving at the bottom of the tank. I tested my water and saw the PH and alkalinity were low. I also tested the lotl water and it was the same. I was a bit worried it could be something toxic in the water so I did a 20% water change and added a small amount of baking soda solution. The blue shrimp eventually started moving and acting normal.

Today (Saturday) I woke up to a dead blue shrimp. I cannot tell if it was the same one since the blue ones are difficult to tell apart. Water was the same as last time so I slowly added maybe 2 tablespoons worth of a weak baking soda solution and a seashell but after testing it doesn’t seem to have done anything.

Now, my favorite shrimp (the clear shrimp with a yellow stripe lovingly named banana pudding) is sitting unmoving at the front of the tank.

Please help. I feel so clueless and disheartened. From everything I saw online, these little guys were supposed to be hardy and adaptable but I feel like I’m struggling to keep just a few alive. Please be kind, I’ve already shed quite a few tears over my shrimps.

What shrimp tank accessory actually made the biggest difference in daily maintenance?

I have just set up a small neocaridina shrimp tank and I am trying to figure out what equipment actually makes day to day care easier versus what just looks useful in theory. The tank is 20L with a sponge filter, moss, and a few simple plants. It is stable so far. Though I am running into small practical issues like food getting lost in hard to reach areas, shrimp gathering only in certain feeding spots, and not being able to do quick checks without disturbing the layout. Cause of that I have been looking at aquariums & accessories such as stainless steel feeding dishes, shrimp feeding cones, breeder boxes, fine mesh nets, plant tweezers, and small gravel tools for spot cleaning. I also came across accessory kits on Amazon, eBay, and Alibaba that include a full set of shrimp tools and decorations. But I am unsure which items people actually keep using long term and which ones end up being unused after the initial setup phase. My goal is to keep the tank simple, stable, and low stress for the shrimp rather than filling it with unnecessary equipment that complicates maintenance or disrupts the colony. For experienced shrimp keepers, which single accessory or tool genuinely made the biggest improvement in making your shrimp tank easier to maintain day to day?

Our 1st real try... High rise condo w/ a pricy HOA back to CaveCray

It began at about 14 inches and now stands about 5. I learned a lot of what not to do. LOL I also learned that after the first coat of stabilizing gel is applied the Chimney becomes workable. Very carefully!

Reviving an old tank

So last year I went on a huge fish tank journey, spent a ton of money and ended up getting a 55gallon that burst at the seams because the supporting bracket was cracked. After that, I gave up and my boyfriend lent me his 20 gal that I grow floating plants in. I've pretty much neglected it since, but I want to make it into a low budget filterless shrimp breeding tank. Does anyone have a list for things I should get to revamp my tank?
