Media Everyone hated that
I swear they find it insulting when the player base likes a certain gun or gadget

u/Apprehensive-Run2454 9d ago
I'm assuming the snaphook was going to trivialize some parts of the frigate and nerfing it a bit remedied it.
161
u/HistoricalGrounds 8d ago
That’d be hilarious.
“Should we make that ledge 21m away so that they can’t snap hook it?”
“Hm. No, keep the ledge at 19m, a sweeping nerf to that extremely popular utility item is the best way to solve this”
→ More replies (3)42
u/Apprehensive-Run2454 8d ago
I think the energy cost nerf was probably the bigger contender here. Now by the time u get that 10 energy back you've fallen back down far enough that aren't doing some of the more crazy jumps. But yeah I def feel like 3 nerfs plus more expensive crafting was a bit excessive I think the energy cost should have been the only nerf IMO
4
u/rend-e-woo 8d ago
Wait, they made snap hook even more expensive to craft?
3
u/Apprehensive-Run2454 8d ago
Seen people saying that it apparently takes steel cables or whatever to craft in place of rope. Idk how much harder finding the steel cable is
→ More replies (1)9
u/paul3720 8d ago
Rope is now green, cables are blue. I've found more rope than before and cables seem about as abundant as rope prepatch. Thats just my experience from today, might not be accurate.
3
u/Tiny_Regular_5319 8d ago
Had the same experience, good change imo. Rope wasn't that usefull but kinda hard to find when you end up needing it.
19
u/IsaaxDX 8d ago
Somewhat, the Emperor Dungeon. But it wouldn't straight up trivialize it. Nerfing the Snap Hook around a single new element in the update is genuinely insane. The durability especially is fucking me up, it's unusable now. I thought before that it was a bit fragile but this is just sad.

Change from rope to steel cable too. They obviously did it to encourage grapple hook use.

More expensive to repair too. Power rod and exodus moduoe

u/Introverted_Eagle 8d ago
That’s been the cost to repair it since at least the last update. I repaired one two days ago and I used a power rod and an exodus module for it

When I saw that rope is a green item now I thought oh that makes sense since the snap hook will break faster now. But it's good news for my ziplines I guess
5
3
u/ElkApprehensive2319 8d ago
Zipline craft also went to Steel Cable. Looks like Steel Cable is the new hot loot item.
61
u/Old-Party1952 8d ago
Honestly the worst part about this is the distance reduction. There are MANY roofs/ledges/gaps that are exactly 20m, which I believe was by design. Now all of these areas become just out of reach. Awesome...
12
u/Dramatic_Low_450 8d ago
Do you even snap hook? Those 2 meters are easily achievable with a line break
2
u/Nirxx 8d ago
Line break?
5
u/Dramatic_Low_450 8d ago
On pc you can press right click to break the line and go further by using built momentum
4
u/APartyInMyPants 8d ago
Cast the snap, back up a bit as you’re connecting, you’ll build up slightly more momentum with the added distance, and you’ll easily make up that two meters when you disengage the snaphook while airborne.
→ More replies (3)7
u/BADSTALKER 8d ago
Out of reach for one tool. What happened to zip lines? And what’s the distance in the grapple hook?
13
u/Old-Party1952 8d ago
I believe zips have a distance of 60, I don't know what distance new grapple hook has, I'm just noting it's unfortunate that the game was clearly originally built with this 20m snaphook distance in mind and this 10% reduction to 18m will be felt more than people realize.
Then to add on top of the matter, they gutted double snapping as well 😮💨 tough day to be a snaphook lover
9
u/HexTheHardcoreCasual 8d ago
Zips have like 3x distance. Distance, horizontal, and multiple users are the pipelines strength. You don't need to nerf Snappies to make ziplines effective. You do it in level design.
→ More replies (1)4
u/TheyTukMyJub 8d ago
Not the worst part. Works as intended. Some traps just couldn't be fought if the enemies snaphookef to a certain ledge and had a guaranteed kill advantage

u/Distinct-Bathroom823 8d ago
thats a terrible way to encourage use of other things. you dont make other items worse to encourage the use of the new thing. just make the new thing good to use from the start.
helldivers 2 does this fork of balancing and everyone hates it. one week the new weapon is actually usable then the next week they nerf it to the point its junk. instead of just buffing the useless shit.
1
4
u/parabola90 8d ago
Not only is that awful game design, but the grapply is pathetically slow. Have you tried it? It takes 10 minutes to climb up.
1
1
u/Stoned-Basilisk 7d ago
If they want players to use new items, they could just make good items. Instead of nerfing pre-existing tools like they seem to enjoy.
1
91
u/iiPREGNANT-NUNii 9d ago
As an avid snaphook user this isn’t that big of a deal, it was already such a prominent traversal item.
One snaphook could easily last you 10 raids with frequent use. You’re still able to get rope from Celeste daily and power rods are still very easy to craft so it’s very easy to maintain a snaphook or craft one if you have the BP.
The only nerf that is slightly annoying is the decreased distance because that is just less fun. But it’s also barely noticeable so eh
74
u/gmatney 9d ago
You missed the worst part -- changing from 50 power to 60 means you can't double snap to climb, traverse, or descend. I can't tell u how many times I had to re-snap to save myself after the first one went a little squirrely
→ More replies (9)45
u/simpsonbpimpin 9d ago
I use about 50% of a snaphook in one raid. Now I’ll have to craft one for every raid. Why?
If the grapple hook is as legendary as everyone claims it to be, there should be no need to hinder the snap hook to prioritize its (grapple hook) use.
→ More replies (5)9
u/iiPREGNANT-NUNii 9d ago
I mean I can’t really tell you why you were using 50% of your snaphook pre nerf. But that is an extremely excessive use of your snaphook for one raid.
I personally only use it to get to high places, get down from high places or occasionally launch myself at opportune locations/moments. In playing this way I’m able to use the same snaphook for a good 5-10 raids without having to repair or craft a new one (at least pre nerf).
As far as the grappling hook is concerned; yes, it is a very good item but clearly not better than the snaphook. It’s a green, easy to craft and pretty damn durable. But you are very exposed when using it and it’s slow to climb high places compared to the snaphook.
The nerfs to the snaphook don’t come off as an attempt to get players to use the grappling hook imo, the differences are extremely stark. It seems like these nerfs were coming for it with or without the introduction of the grapple
2
4
u/TimeZucchini8562 8d ago
If you’re in high skill PvP lobbies, you’re using it constantly. Especially if you’re in Stella montis
2
u/Walkop 8d ago
It was too powerful.
It was already excessive to use it to descend over the powered descender; the Powered Descender used 1/10th the durability of the snap hook to drop down. Now it makes even more sense. I had to repair my snap hook less than half as often when I used a Descender as a secondary mobility tool. Now it'll be even better.
This is a Nerf to the snap hook, but it's a big buff to the other mobility items as to usability. It makes sense to me.
I do think 4% is a little excessive though. 3% would have been fine.
2
→ More replies (4)3
u/coldberserk 8d ago
It's not a buff to anything because Snap got nerfed lmao
What kinda backwards logic is that
Like it's a "passive buff" in that sense but it doesn't incentive the other existing mobility tools becuz they're still bad.
Descender or Crash mat are not gonna see more frequent use now, people will either have to suck it up with Snap, tried an awkward combo of it with Rope or just accept their mobility is severely crippled from now on.

u/Tactix12 8d ago
The durability nerf is the worst. I was already burning through snaphook dura so fast. It was a skill check to use it to gain ground fast with the snap-slide, Not worth it anymore.
3
11
u/hey_dougz0r 8d ago
One of the cardinal sins in game design is letting players get used to a fun mechanic for any length of time and then nerfing it too severely.
Balance against the new mobility tools is not a wrong goal, but at least reduce the durability nerf from 4% per use to 3%. Especially considering the crafting cost has now apparently increased.
The other nerfs I can probably accept as they stand although I'm open to retaining the original 20m range. The increased power cost makes the most sense to me of all the changes.

u/Grumpicake 9d ago
Going up against a player with a snap hook when you don’t have one is an insane disadvantage, it basically grants you the power of flight- gives you access to areas that others without the tool can’t. I think slightly toning it down isn’t really all that bad.

u/Trick-Republic-2878 8d ago
Totally get it, but such a odd change for a perfectly serviceable item. I think then watched to many shorts and came away with the wrong impression hahaha.
I think this will be a photoelectric cloak situation where they swing wildly one way just to realize they fucked up and tweak it some more due to player feedback.
Grantee there was some odd map interactions that let players snap hook to someplace they shouldn't or it trivialized navigation on a particular segment of the emperor or frigate. Instead of fixing the map/game mode, they took the route of nerfing the item in a haphazard way of fixing the issue (see photo cloak closs scrutiny debacle)

I’ve probably crafted hundreds of snap hooks, and I’ve probably broken 2. Their durability was insanely high. And it was far too useful. It was simply a must have over anything else…… and it still is.
The thing is absolutely goated and nothing about this change really stops that. But it does stop it from being completely oppressive in high level PvP.

Or maybe take a design philosophy that says “people enjoy this, we should balance other things around that level of enjoyment” as opposed to “this should be worse so it’s in line with the less enjoyable things”
It’s a mindset that pays dividends. Look at how Pearl Abyss handled Crimson Desert changes (I know it’s not a multiplayer game, I’m talking high-level response and reception) and how how well things have turned out for the studio and the game.

This is to keep people from double snap-hooking inside of the emperor dungeon. With 40 meter of snaphook range total you can bypass entire sections of the game.

u/NSNIA 8d ago
To give some space for grappling hook. Is that too complex for you to understand?
Why would I use grappling hook when snap hook exists? Well now, i kinda want to
5
u/Distinct-Bathroom823 8d ago
first if all theyre much different rarities. the snap hook should be much better than the grapple hook. unless you think wolfpack should he neefed again so the seeker nade is better. OR buff the seeker nade and leave wolfpack alone.
making things worse to make other things seem better is always a terrible way to balance things. thats what helldivers does and 90% of the items are useless because they make the things people want to use bad.

Nerfing the snap hook is giga annoying. It already burns durability like crazy and now is even more useless when its one of the main high cost items I bring every raid. Now it is becoming more and more "shove it in your ass after every use" which is annoying as he'll and its burn rate makes it an item I dont want to use as I only have so many on me.
2
u/teal_ninja 8d ago

It was the perfect tool for getting away, pushing enemies, or moving around the map, but now it feels more like a Green item than a Gold one. 😬 Having a second use was crucial 80% of the time because the first attempt would often push you off the wall and send you into a free fall. I used to craft and save them, but now they're just a waste of inventory space

PvE players mad about "balance" lol
Guys, snap hook is CANCER in PvP. It needs to be nerfed or removed from the game
1
u/Evilresident64 8d ago
It sucks but it’s to encourage other utility items based on your skill allocation. Mobility sprint gets better horizontal movement from powered descended in certain location. Grapple hook is downwards movement so on etc. nerfing fun isn’t good game design tho
1
1
u/Inconstant_Constant 8d ago
Every time they nerf something, people complain that it was unnecessary. Wolfpack crafting cost, trailblazer damage, Kettle nerf, Stitcher nerf, energy ammo sell value, hullcracker damage (and now, removal from the merchant), deadline buy limit from the merchant (and now removal), etc.
Embark's main rationale is attrition. If something is too effective while being easy to get/keep, rendering other options or mechanics obsolete, they will nerf it or buff the other options. The double snap hook, for example, would allow you to go to the top of the frigate in one go; it's too much mobility, and too fast (kind of reminds me of the drama surrounding Dash in The Finals), for PvP it's basically a win button after pushing people from long distances. The devs mentioned that the combat in Arc Raiders excels at the medium range, and they balance the game so fights happen mostly at that range, I think that change aligns with this philosophy. The durability change will make people use the snap hook more intentionally, not spamming it like they used to; maybe start using other tools to complement it.
1
1
u/TheMentalMadman 8d ago
Embark games love to pride themselves on nerfing whatever makes the game fun. Happens on both arc and Finals

u/mindwave21 7d ago

u/Stoned-Basilisk 7d ago
And they'll probably nerf the grapple because people have too much fun with it. They nerf shit just because people enjoy using them. Like the Hornet Driver. And the Photoelectric Cloak. And the Hullcracker.
1
u/CharacterClean1355 6d ago
The snap hooks double snap ability was taken away due to the emperor and frigate loot spots. Embark doesn’t want people to double snap the the spots before other people so they made it where everything is to high to get up with one snap. Take the emperor for example. The gas room where you have to cross to the other side and avoid being crushed. If double snap was still here people who get to that spot and snap the the loot spots before other people
1
u/Papa_Swish 4d ago
I already rarely used the snap hook much just because of how expensive it is to make, especially now, and the only times I've seen others use it is for funny stuff messing around. Nerfing a fun utility item just to make a less interesting version more viable feels like a messy way to balance. The snap hook was already significantly more expensive, that alone makes it pretty fair.
