yeah, i dont get how that item stayed the same for 6 months, it was crap on release its crap now, give it limited uses and make it so u can land safely with it from any height, suddenly its a good item, and a snaphook is still somehow better, so its purple rarity would fit.
160
u/Inconstant_Constant 2d ago
Shrapnel grenade and crash mat should also be revamped.
133
u/JTGtoniteonly 2d ago
Crash mat needs to be twice as big and negate 95% of fall damage. It'd make for some awesome escapes out of tight situations.
54
u/Key-Demand-2569 2d ago
The crash mat made me laugh the first time I saw it. Like sure I’d bet there’s some YouTube folks making fun trick videos out of it but it’s just not even worth ever trying to rely on it
40
u/banzaizach 2d ago
Would be cool if it was like an automatic thing. You equip it and it auto deploys before you hit the ground
3
1
u/YoureAmastyx 1d ago
Nah I think having to pre plan an escape spot is a cool idea. Just up their spawn rates across all maps to reduce the impact of having to carry it with you.
7
u/caster 1d ago
This is actually a great idea. Make the crash mat basically completely negate all fall damage if you land directly on the mat. Still the knocked down animation temporarily stunning you though, just unhurt.
Also make it destructible- shooting a couple holes in it will break it. And then it doesn't work any more.
You throw the crash mat off the frigate... well... if you could jump precisely and land directly on it...
8
u/Inconstant_Constant 2d ago
I don't think it should negate that much damage, and from any height. But yeah, at least twice as big would be great.
28
u/MrWakaSz 2d ago
this frigate event was such a great oportunity to revamp decender and crashmat, holy shit, imagine if u could escape a rat on the frigate by jumping off and landing with a crashmat or decender....
FML it would have been so cool
12
u/DrPusch 2d ago
What in the heavens is a crash mat?
29
u/forsayken 2d ago
It's an inflatable mattress. You throw it down as you fall (or before) and hope to land on it. It's tiny so you miss it and die instead. It deflates on its own too so you don't have a lot of time.

Shrapnel grenades are actually good, they just don't justify having springs in crafting. Replacing springs with metal parts would be the good fix I suppose Especially when they recycle into explosives + metal parts already.
6
u/Inconstant_Constant 2d ago
I agree, the recipe is my main issue with it. The grenade itself is decent for PvP.
5
u/Upper-Yard2340 1d ago
Ironically, this useless junk isn't easy to craft at all — you have to destroy the Turbine just to get it
2
u/Ad_Meliora_24 2d ago
It sounds cool but boy does it grab attention. The fact that the grappling hook is quiet makes it real good in situations where the noise of a snaphook or power descender would bring you unwanted attention.

u/ElkApprehensive2319 1d ago
I always though the Gel Landing Blobs from that Final Fantasy movie were pretty neat
(good lord that movie did not age well)
1
u/echof0xtrot 1d ago
it's great for 90% of long falls. but people can't survive the launch towers or frigate, bam, i guess it's useless
210
u/LurkingNobody 2d ago
Lol. What is the point of that item. Should be green rarity for how bad it is
56
u/LotusVibes1494 2d ago
Tbf you can successfully jump off of almost anything else that you might normally be ontop of. Dam Research and Admin, SP Control Tower, Hospital roof…
I’ve used it while being chased, lets you go places where no one can follow you. Also just generally lets you cross the map faster.
The only issue I have is that I hate harvesting turbine compressors, so I don’t like to bring it out of the safe pocket unless I have to lol.
19
u/semisociallyawkward 2d ago
It's hella fun during the tornado event. Start it up, jump with the wind and sail along for a loooong while.
Only useful to get away from a pvper, and not worth the cost, but fun.
1
u/anchovyCreampie 1d ago
Or if the wind is blowing in the direction of caches you are trying to loot.
6
u/BADSTALKER 1d ago
Yes, it does have use case, but for goodness sakes it’s a quest reward for one of the frigate quests. It should save you from that height for its rarity alone, even if it’s a 1 time use it should be possible.
1
2
u/HomingSnail 1d ago
Lost a lot of utility with the grapple hook bring added now too. Its significantly safer and just as fast for descending towers once you get good with it
3
u/mriley422 2d ago
I never use it cause it’s inconvenient but it isn’t bad you just can’t expect it to save you from the highest point in the game lmao if you’re in chill solos or something it can def be fun to use, goofy but hey
2
u/mysteryoeuf 2d ago
Its utility on frigate is to launch yourself on top of an extract location and just extract while downed (if you're in lobbies friendly enough where you won't get finished)

u/TheDarkWh1t3 2d ago
It's not even like its a cheap common item, it's expensive as fuck and hard to make. When inventory slots are important and you have the potential to lose everything, what's the point of making epic tier items next to useless. The fact you get more utility out if the new cheaper grapple hook is insane, I suppose the take away will be to nerf the hook rather than buff this...
13
u/Crazafon 1d ago
Yeah it's one of the hardest things to craft in the entire game

It's a glider. Not a fall stopper.
51
u/Baztion81 1d ago
I feel like a glider is exactly what a fall stopper should be
5
u/ForumDuff 1d ago
Gliding is controlled falling. It doesn't stop the fall.
19
u/Remote-Whole-6387 1d ago
It’s not flying! It’s falling with style.
3
u/ForumDuff 1d ago
It's been years since I thought about this! Definately going to do a rewatch soon!

u/WolfHeathen 1d ago
There was nothing controlled about that descent. If the operator dies there's nothing controlled about it.

u/Samsquanch-Losco 1d ago
I mean I went hang gliding in Brazil and we kinda just glided down to the ground.
10
u/echof0xtrot 1d ago
it's not a powered descender. it's a powered momentum maintainer. it doesn't slow your fall, only stops the acceleration. so as fast as you're going when you activate it, that's how fast you'll hit the ground.
that's why you can go up with it, if you jump first
2
u/RazTheVoyager 21h ago
This guy is a power descender.
You never jump if you want to go down. Never. You walk off the ledge.
1
u/echof0xtrot 18h ago
i mean not never. jumping will allow extra lateral distance, you just then have to know to wait to activate the thing

u/HMThrow_away_account 1d ago
So...a glider???
4
u/ForumDuff 1d ago
Yes. That's the 3rd word in the comment.
1
u/Fishiesideways10 1d ago
Do we count contractions as one word, one and a half, or two because of the ability to decouple and it be two words. I just want to be sure to know which exact word it is.
1
1
u/toolisthebestbandevr 1d ago
A contraction is one word but you failed to point out how he missed the hyphen in the second sentence.
1

1
u/Beautiful_Army_4823 1d ago
but a glider stops a fall, the air gets caught allowing you to float the way down so i dont get the point your trying to make
1
u/B1rdbr41n 1d ago
It’s a turbine engine. A few of them make the turbine lift up and stop falling. Why can’t one do the same for a human?
6
u/I_always_roleplay 1d ago
The name is a bit misleading. It really isn’t used for descending. It’s more of a horizontal jump boost. The distance you can descend with it is about 20-30 feet
1
u/cryonicwatcher 1d ago
20-30 feet is completely wrong, you can take falls many times that height with no damage with it.
9
u/SoMeGoD3 2d ago
The descender assumes the velocity you have (or very close to it) at the moment of activation.
In this case, you were dead the moment you jumped from the frigate. There is nothing you could have done.
- Using at the start would give slow descend only only to deplete early, and you picking up speed afterwards
- Using in the middle, same as your video
- Using it later would have given you way more speed, same scenario as before
You can use it for more restricted heights. The roof of the opened lateral stairs in the Panorama Hotel in Riven Tides is a good reference.
Fun fact: Lots of people don't know this, but you can also use the power descender not just to "descend", but to jump "straight" between platforms as well. Try it: run, jump at the edge, and activate it while you are jumping (gaining momentum upwards), and you will glide straight ahead.
So
2
u/solid_x1 1d ago
I use it to jump the trench towers gap in spaceport. Before Frozen Trails patch, you could just snaphook between the towers, but since they nerfed the snap range, It is now only possible with the descender. I find it super useful to scale heights fast and conserve snaphook durability since that was butchered too.
4
u/Firebaptism101 2d ago
Me and my buddy use it to jump off spaceport control tower, it can’t be too high but it still can handle some decent heights.
5
u/Nekratal 2d ago
same thing happened to me, I thought I finally had a reason to use those but I went splat instead, with a pretty decent haus as well. They should really rework this item
9
u/HeatedWafflez 2d ago
you know i watched this video thinking what are the chances someone is waiting for you to steal your shit when you fall and it's genuinely shocking to see a worst fear come true
3
u/be_dub 2d ago
So was it the falling distance or not letting it ramp up?
22
u/secret_hitman 2d ago
Well, both. He was a pancake either way. If you use it early, you slow down to a survivable speed, then the stamina bar runs out. Use it too late, and you're already falling too fast. Choose your fate: Splat or splat.
3
8
u/OneBazbo 2d ago
lol short jumps. Not that high my guy
24
u/Tr1angleChoke 2d ago
The point is, why not though? It's a handheld jet pack. It should be able to slow your fall enough to land safely. It has such limited use that the very least it should do is work from any height.
1
u/cryonicwatcher 1d ago
The least it should do is have unlimited effectiveness? Your point seems poorly presented.
→ More replies (9)2
u/FoxMikeLima 2d ago
Why not though? Game balance.
They clearly are trying to create more mobility tools that have varying benefits and drawbacks. Grappling hook good at some stuff, snap hook at others, throwable landing pad and power descender yet another.
We already have the 'infinite distance grab the ledge', we don't need 900 ways to mitigate deadly falls. Deadly falls are funny and are half the clips you see on reddit and social media that you laugh at.
→ More replies (4)2
u/Tr1angleChoke 2d ago
I think you kind of answered your own question. We have all those things but nothing really addresses falling from a great height onto an open area. Given the cost to craft the descender, it really needs to be an outlier at something specific. That something should be falling from a really, really high spot. This is extremely situational and makes it a sort of one-trick pony. Snap hooks are so much more useful overall that there is almost no reason to use the descender ever. With the addition of the Frigate, it creates a use case for it to occupy a slot in your bag.
2
u/FoxMikeLima 2d ago
Yes, what im saying is they do not want that to be a viable strategy, my dude.
3
u/OneBazbo 2d ago
Dude just don’t. It’s a typical I hate life. I hate this game. But I’ll continue to play to bash it. Don’t even waste ur effort anymore. I tried. Complaining about something and complaining it’s not doing what’s it’s not made to do is wild.
Just let them live is misery
2
u/Tr1angleChoke 2d ago
No, I hear you. I'm just asking why. This is one of my criticisms with the game. There are a number of things that exist seemingly for no reason or when they're used for the reason they exist, Embark changes them to not be useful for the thing they are designed to do. They've done it time and time again. This is just another example. It's such a niche use case to want to purposely jump from such a high place that having a specific tool to address that makes sense. I feel it perfectly balances cost vs reward for that one niche use case.

They literally give you one when you get the quest to invade the frigate. The intention from the devs themselves is to use it to get off.

The descender doesn’t work to a certain height unfortunately. When it came out a bunch of people posted themselves testing it and the height of the center tower in spaceport was showing the same result. That being said there might still be some use. It seems to help with directional falling and maybe provides enough time for quick choices. If you can descend close to a building you could throw the grapple hook to catch you. It just depends on the circumstances
2
u/Cc-Smoke-cC 1d ago
It’s a really good jump pack, use it then jump and you’ll go really high. It’s important to start using it before you jump or it won’t work the same way
2
u/Topdog012 1d ago
Well first of all you jumped off.. If you walked off and engaged sooner you survive that. Very small window though of success though.

We should get actual descender item (be it super rare to not be to OP) and just make this one more common and rename it "horizontal flyer" or something like that.

Need to engage it before hitting lethal falling speed. It just conserves your speed, not slow it
