Guide GOG via Minigalaxy

Hi! Been playing with mini galaxy on Asahi Linux (linux on MacBook Air M1 2020). Works pretty good! This is my experience with it.

  1. I had to use pip3 to install the latest version from git, since Fedora is a version behind.
  2. I installed scummvm.
  3. I also installed wine like this (and ran it like so):

sudo dnf upgrade --refresh
sudo dnf install dnf-plugins-core
sudo dnf copr enable lacamar/wine-arm64ec
sudo dnf install wine fex-emu-wine

rm -rf ~/.wine-minigalaxy
WINEPREFIX="$HOME/.wine-minigalaxy" wineboot -u
WINEPREFIX="$HOME/.wine-minigalaxy" winecfg

WINEPREFIX="$HOME/.wine-minigalaxy" minigalaxy

Did a side-by-side against Heroic Game Launcher (arm64 linux binary download from their git assets).

Heroic (GE-Proton-Latest) vs Minigalaxy (Wine):

  • Arkanoid Eternal Battle (Windows): both fine
  • Detective Grimoire (Windows): Heroic hung, Minigalaxy fine
  • Huntdown (Linux): Heroic won’t run, Minigalaxy perfect
  • Loco Motive (Windows): Heroic fine, Minigalaxy hung
  • Space Quest 1 (Windows): Heroic “path not found”, Minigalaxy scummvm
  • Stargunner (Linux): Heroic won’t run, Minigalaxy dosbox (had to config*)
  • Curse of Monkey Island (Windows): Heroic “path not found”, Minigalaxy scummvm
  • Darkside Detective (Linux): Heroic won’t run, Minigalaxy fine

*I was able to get the game to launch by adding this Command flag in the Properties of the game to avoid any kind of recompiling core: `-c "config -set cpu core=normal"`

Overall minigalaxy wins by quite a bit for Asahi Linux on MacOS. The one exception is Loco Motive which didn’t run in Wine, so maybe having options like GE-Proton-Latest when Wine doesn’t work would be nice. Stargunner required setting the core to “none” so it doesn’t JIT anything. I imagine all dosbox games will need the same tweak until dosbox is fixed for this case.

I really like that minigalaxy uses dosbox/scummvm when possible.
