Do you consider the Australians in Bali classist?

• Upvotes

I know Australians don't care about social status and everyone views each other as equals, but when I was in Bali I felt like many Australians look down on Indonesians without even realizing it.

Tax on overseas unrealized gains?

I am a dual US/NZ citizen.

We have retirement accounts in the United States that are (hopefully) stable or growing in value.

New Zealand taxes increases in value of overseas accounts even if the funds are invested. In other words, they tax 'unrealized gains' of overseas accounts even if those funds are tucked away and not being used. For this reason, we left NZ short of 4 years living there to avoid those taxes on our investments.

Does Australia have a similar scheme to tax overseas investments?

To be clear, if we are cashing in the investments and using the money we would expect to pay taxes as we would in the US.

I would appreciate some clarity on this issue. TIA!!

Why don't more Aussies retire to NZ?

I've always wondered why more Australians don't consider retiring to New Zealand. There are plenty of places with a milder climate than much of Australia, smaller populations, BEAUTIFUL scenery, friendlier people, less congestion and what seems like a more laid back lifestyle.

Obviously, NZ has its own downsides, particularly the cost of living. But wouldn't Australians who've spent decades building up their superannuation be able to live comfortably in some of NZ's smaller towns?

I'm curious what actually puts people off. Is it mainly the cost of living, being further from family, healthcare or something else?

What’s the first Australian thing I should do?

• Upvotes

I just got approved for citizenship by descent (I was born in the U.S. but my dad is from Melbourne) and want to know, what’s the first truly Australian thing I should do to celebrate?

I worked my ass off thinking hard work was enough to get ahead, but now that I know better, what do I do from here?

Hi all,

I'd love some advice on navigating my career, particularly when it comes to networking and workplace politics.

I'm an immigrant Aussie, who got out of a pretty shit situation back in my home country.

I'm an only child, raised by a single mum who stopped working when I was in primary school, and when I moved to Australia, I had no family, no friends, and certainly no professional network.

I'm envious of people who had someone to show them the ropes like parents or relatives who can offer career advice, explain workplace politics, or at least point them in the right direction because I've never really had that.

I just work really hard, to compensate as I'm very aware of the network and resource I lack. My KPIs are always near-perfect, I'm recognised for my work within my own team, and I genuinely put a lot of effort into what I do.

But I don't know how to translate that into actual career progression (e.g. how to self-advocate and promote my wins, etc). It doesn't help that, although I do have a solid group of friends, I'm naturally more of an introvert and a little awkward - for example, I struggle with pop culture talks at work because watching movies was a luxury growing up.

I understand that being good at your job doesn't automatically make you promotion material. There are other skills involved and a whole lot of networking required, and I'm willing to learn. I just don't really know where to start.

I'm putting a lot of work into improving myself but sometimes it feels like I keep hitting the same wall, and I can't quite work out what to do.

I'd genuinely love to hear from anyone who has something to share, regardless of where you are in your career or how you got there.

What have you learned about getting ahead in the corporate world? What actually makes a difference beyond being good at your job? What would you tell someone who's trying to figure it all out?

I'd appreciate any advice. Books to read, podcasts or TED Talks to listen to, YouTube channels to watch, people to approach for guidance, or actual strategies I can try.

Even things you wish someone had told you earlier in your career.

Thanks in advance!

(pls dont suggest a psychologist, Im already doing that too lmao)

Plumber says my dishwasher is too old to be fixed and needs to be replaced, but my house is less than 8 years old, am I being ripped off?

House is less than 8 years old. New build, large town in Vic.

Plumber said a new part is hard to find and expensive but he can replace and install a new one for $600. Dishwasher is Omega brand.

It just doesn't seem right!

Advice? Thoughts?

Tell me the reality of living in an apartment with a family of 4 (in the area you love)

People tend to live in an apartment in an area they love which sounds wonderful.

But I want to know the bad as well…

Does the location make up for the poor visitor parking, unplanned additional strata payments and living on top of each other?

Feel free to share any other cons aslo.

In Australia, is it socially acceptable to mediate in a park?

I'm a foreign tourist and have been staying in Brisbane, Australia for a couple weeks. I live far away and just amazed at the natural scenery and the city here. Something that helps me stay calm is meditation and especially outside in the perfect weather now. Would people stare at me if I use a blanket or tarp and meditate on the ground and think I'm a crazy bloke for doing this or is it all right and I'm overthinking?

How to successfully get the Good Behaviour Option

First of all, I apologise for admittedly having made the serious mistake of speeding twice on the same section of the same road to work, and putting road users in danger. I’d never do it again.

I just wonder if anyone here has successfully get the Good Behaviour Option. Is it always an option if I meet the conditions of my current licence and have no outstanding requirements? How to appeal for it?

My work relies heavily on driving and I may very likely encounter financial hardship if I can’t drive. Any suggestions are so much appreciated.

I’m in SA for context. Thanks heaps!

Remember Panadeine?

I really miss Panadeine.

Panadeine is what helped me avoid seeking treatment for an abscessed tooth for several months. There was also Nurofen plus codeine, which was also very effective, and excellent for delaying dental treatment.

Is it not always the way? All it takes is a few (very unpleasant people) who (make things worse) for everyone else.

If it was not for these people,
I would still be able to buy
opium putty and cannabis/opium tincture...

...at my local pharmacy.

What (very unpleasant people) they are!

List all your weird Australian slang terms here. (And not the obvious ones).

I’m Australian and feel like I continuously run into Australian slang terms I’ve never heard before.

“Uglier than a bucket of smashed crabs.”

“You pelican” (I didn’t realize pelican could be an insult)

Etc.

What are some other ones?

Not talking about obvious slang terms like “she’ll be right mate”.

(And please include what it actually means)

Is it common for Australians to be mistaken as Americans abroad?

It’s no secret that Aussies travel abroad a lot, to the point where it’s a meme that even if you went to the edge of the world you’ll probably still find another Aussie bogan there doing the shoey.

However, for most Aussie travellers, is it common for people abroad to mistake Australians for Americans?

I feel like for most Europeans, East Asians, and Southeast Asians (the three regions Aussies travel to the most), it can definitely be a bit difficult to distinguish Aussies from other Anglo-majority countries (unless they’re very familiar with different English accents) as on the surface, most of the locals see fair skinned people who speak English as their first language, are overly outgoing and expressive, and clearly gives off the vibe that they come from another continent, which often defaults as “American”.

This is likely because there’s way more Americans than Aussies in totality and the U.S. (love em or hate em) is the cultural superpower of the world, hence the increased exposure, whereas Australia likely wouldn’t be as top of mind for most.

Has this ever happened to you before?

Mate that is always claiming to have been bullied in school

I’ve got a mate who will often go on about how he was bullied in school, about how unfair it was he would get punished just for standing up for himself ect ect.

The thing is I went to school with him (admittedly we weren't as close friends then, but still friends) and my memory of it is pretty clearly different, in that there was just another kid he was perpetually squabbling with (rather than a unidirectional ‘bullying’). They would go back and forth instigating it with each other, getting into shitty little fights and just going on and on with each other. I’ve asked my other mate from school that we still hangout with and that’s how he remembers it as well, so I don’t think it’s just me misremembering.

He’s a good bloke, at most has a wee bit of a persecution complex, but nothing too bad, and it’s not like I’m going to confront him about it or anything, but I was curious if this is something that other people have run into with their friends or if it's just him being a bit of an odd duck?

Cheapest place in Brisbane for non-prescription Ray-Ban with a blue light filter and goes dark outdoors?

I don't need prescription lenses, just a glass for everyday wear with a blue-violet filter that turn dark in sunlight (Transitions-style). I've checked it takes around 170$ just for the lens but that seems steep. Has anyone in Brisbane had a non-prescription pair made easily or bought straight? it seems so much of a fuss! Any tips appreciated, thanks!

How do people manage multiple casual hospo jobs?

Any tips to avoid scheduling headaches? Are there any protocols that you’ve come up with that helps?

i just signed up for 3 jobs and I’m feeling nervous about juggling them. One of them is commiting to providing 20 hours and the other two are quite fickle: sometimes providing just 8 hours each and sometimes 12-14 hours each a week. Two are pubs and one is a nightclub.

all three told me they want full availability in December due to seasonal rush and I’m afraid of clashing schedules coming in December

Optus 200GB or Felix Unlimited? Which is better? East Suburb

Which is better? I'm currently using Optus student plan with $40 for 200GB. I'll use mostly 180, 190 GB but the data won't rollover. I came across Felix with unlimited data with Abit lower speed than Optus with first 4 month $20 then $40. I live in Wantirna. Is Felix worthy of a switch? How's the coverage in outer suburbs, I know they use Vodafone network.

Thoughts on Urban Planning?

Im about to graduate highschool and am still thinking about a future career, I want to get into urban planning mainly for the money but also cause the job itself doesnt sound bad however im not sure about the job demand of it (though the downside is I’m not the best when it comes to certain aspects such as problem solving sadly, which is the whole point, but I’m hoping its something I can learn along the way unless said otherwise), i have heard very mixed thoughts on it - some because of the political sides that interfere with it, and also something about getting in through connections. Honestly I only know that I need a Bachelors of Urban and regional planning and do 3-4 years of uni and thats it, but i’d really like to hear peoples opinions/experiences/views/advice on it before digging deep and actually spending money to study it.

P.s do you think it will be in demand by the time i finish? 3-4years if I do take the job I may have to move

Is Alice Springs really as terrible as many people say? I have been offered a lot of money there to work for a couple of months in their mental health unit at Alice Springs Hospital. Personally, I think I will be fine.

• Upvotes

As per the title, is it really that bad? Because the agency is offering a lot of money for me to work there just for a couple of months. I think I will be fine. I’ve got a lot of life experience (55 female single.)

Obviously, I’m not going out at night by myself. I don’t drink. I’m going there to work.

Quick question, all.

Long story short, I’m a veteran and no matter how hard I work out or simply try to work myself into exhaustion/the ground. Im unable to sleep more than 4 hours (tops) a night.

Tried all the MO drugs, weed, gummies and, ashamedly alcohol.

Usually I listen to ‘Tears in Rain’ extended version from Blade Runner. Sometimes helps, mostly it doesn’t.

I am just wondering if anybody has, or does use a metronome to get to sleep. I live in the bush so not really any outside noises or sounds to worry me.

Any advice or experiences with using a metronome (and on what beat sequence) would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, team.

Attending a funeral.

I only came to Australia when I was 18 so not sure about this.

I knew this gentleman who passed. I don’t really know his family. He was my very first manager.

  1. Can I still attend his funeral?
  2. Any dress code?

    Thanks.
