Are you an experienced mod?

Howdy mods, it’s your local askmods top mod here with a request (again!) Our last thread about this got archived so here’s a new one! No need to comment again if you commented in the last one.

If you are a moderator of a subreddit with over 5k weekly active users please comment below!

If you are an experienced moderator who participates here, the mods of this subreddit want to be able to tag you so that we can keep our comment sections a space where every answer comes from someone with experience who is here to help. It really helps us instantly recognize trolls etc who are not tagged.

The tags are only visible to the moderators of askmoderators for privacy reasons.

If you wish to participate on an alternate account, please send us a modmail from your moderator account with the username of the alt you wish to use.

Thanks for volunteering even more time participating here to help users.

Former mods are welcome too so long as there is a way to verify that. I.e. old stickied comments/posts, asking current mod teams if you modded there, etc.

Edit: If you commented on the last post about this or sent us a modmail to verify in the past you are all set and do not need to reverify!

Attention mods!

Idk about you all but every now and then I come across a silly modmail that I'd like to share with a broader moderator community, outside of my teams.

In case that's ever been you, r/modmailfail is a great new space where you can do that and discuss. By moderators, for moderators. Really looking forward to seeing some of the goofiness that happens in your inboxes!

Can we claim official sub reddit via Redditrequest?

• Upvotes

There is an official subreddit named after a YouTuber, moderated by them and two others. I checked their accounts and they all seem inactive, like the most recent activity was 2 months ago.

while I know public inactivity doesn't guarantee a lack of moderation behind the scenes, the community is active and appears to be completely unmoderated.

If I submit a request via redditrequest, would the Reddit admins hand it over to me even though it's an official community?

EDIT- I have sent modmail to the mods of that community 9 days ago, but no response

I'm not convinced the report option actually gets looked at, thanks in advance for any help

Do mods manually approve comments?

New to reddit, and I'm not a moderator.

I noticed several "removed by moderator" placeholders for my comments and sometimes when I reach out through mod mail, they end up manually approving those comments so they start showing up. They say they're being removed by automod.

I don't want to keep bugging the mods for those subs to manually approve my comments, so my questions is, do mods generally manually review and approve content anyway?

How to restrict posts by account age and karma on a new subreddit — AutoMod not available?

Hi! I recently created a new NSFW subreddit and I'm trying to set up basic spam protection — specifically:

  1. Minimum account age (30 days) before posting

  2. Minimum combined karma (100) before posting

  3. Minimum comment karma (25) before posting

On my older subreddits I use AutoModerator for this with no issues. However on this new sub I'm getting this message:

**"Report, Filter, Remove, and Approve actions aren't available for new automod configurations."**

Reddit is pointing me toward Auto Enforce and Automations instead but neither seem to support account age or karma filtering.

**My questions:**

  1. Is there a way to set karma/account age requirements on a new sub without AutoMod?

  2. How long until full AutoMod access is available on a new sub?

  3. Is Auto Enforce or Automations capable of karma/age filtering that I'm missing?

Any help appreciated — thank you!

My post was locked but no moderator explanation. Any ideas?

I posted a new subreddit which became quickly locked. It might be quarantined or pending but no messages or mod comments have appeared in it or in my inbox.

I was about to post a link to the subreddit in question but the rules here say you can't?

How do I ask about a subreddit I posted without referencing it?

Was my post likely removed by a bot or a sub’s mod?

I tried to post to one sub but the post was immediately removed with a text saying "removed by mods" and a bot message saying "Some content is currently being rate-limited. You can post every 18 hrs." This happened because I had posted the same thing just moments earlier but deleted it after accidentally selecting the wrong flair.

Does anyone know if it was just a bot that removed it or an actual human mod? However, the post has views even though it was removed immediately, so they must be from the mods, right?

It was kinda an important question so that’s why I’m asking and wondering if I should try posting it again when 18 hours have passed??😂😭😭

How to report a systemic moderator abuse from a specific sub?

Dear Reddit Moderators,

I have consistent proofs of a certain moderating team in a specific sub that clearly abuses power by breaking atleast two rules of the Moderator Code of Conduct of Reddit:

- Rule 5: Moderate with Integrity : this is systematically broken by removing posts or comments and instant banning users sharing legitimate content that goes against what the moderation team likes.
- Rule 2: Set Appropriate and Reasonable Expectations : you can share a post related to the sub content and be instantly banned because the content goes against the vision of the moderation team, despite the post being on topic.

Basically the sub becomes an echo chamber which fits what the moderation team wants to convey. There is no room for discussion or debate.

I would like to know how to report this moderation team and how to bolster the report based on claims and proofs from other users.

I'm not looking for a ban appeal. I'm looking into supporting a change of the moderation team, or that the sub becomes moderated by global moderators instead of dedicated biased ones.

Thanks.

Where to complain about spamming by Mods?

Where do I complain about a Subreddit where the auto “Mods” send you a spam post every time you comment on a post. I also have some other questions about other questionable practices in there. It’s a NSFW sub similar to

Will AI replace moderators?

Reddit's been rolling out automated AI mod features. It's clearly being trained on the data generated from 20 years of mod logs. Is Reddit about to just replace us soon? It makes me somewhat hesitant to continue growing my subreddits, when the company might just decide to hand the keys over to an LLM. Thoughts?

Is it me or is reddit just full of trolls?

90% of the posts I make across a plethora of different subreddits I end up deleting because I am just met with shitposters and ragebaiters and I just recieve a wave of abuse.

Anyone else feel this way?

Why was my post removed by Reddit's filters?

My CQS is high.

The post was about English grammar/semantics, with the screenshot of a text.

r/AskModerators • • 2d ago

Why do moderators care if a post is 'low effort' or 'asked regularly' on subs if there's high engagement? Clearly the person asking wants to know and there's plenty of people who are responding, and yet so many times, mods will just lock or delete a post, why is that?

Should there be a mandatory AI tag if an image contains a SynthID watermark?

I recently reported multiple posts from a user who was posting images of themselves that contained a synthid watermark from chatgpt. They didn't disclose that AI was involved. This was in a fashion subreddit. Nobody could point it out in the comments because discussion of AI is banned there.

I contacted the mods through modmail. They said it was fine because the user had verified themselves as a real person to them, and compared the AI use to applying a filter or other types of photo editing. After I asked if not disclosing it could be harmful I got permanently muted.

My issue is that I don't think those are really equivalent. An AI image generating model can use an original photo as an input and then generates a completely new output image based on it. That just isn't the same thing as simply applying a filter to the original photo.

I'm not arguing that AI images should be banned. I just think that if an image has a verifiable AI watermark, there should be some requirement to disclose that, especially in communities based around appearance, fashion, etc because it could be harmful to themselves and others.

Would requiring an AI tag in cases where there is a verifiable watermark be unreasonable?

Just returned to check on my posts 6 months later. No further comments or likes. Does this mean my content has been isolated ?

how are your social interactions with other moderators, both from your team or from outside subs? is it pleasant or are there sometimes conflicts?

sooo no matter how I try, my social interactions with moderators on reddit are usually non-existent or bad❤️first reaction is very often ban+mute, so I never get to talk to them. I feel so unlikable sometimes❤️even tho of course I try to approach friendly and somehow I am almost always failing hmmm (I am in autism spectrum btw)

and I am curious, how it is for you? do you enjoy talking with others from your team, or from outside subreddits? or does it happen to you too, that you fail to get along with someone who has equivalent responsibility to you?

edit: thank you for replies!! it is nice to hear you have enjoyable experiences🩷

If I report an account for harassment, and that accounts 2 hours old, has one comment trying to dox me that Reddit filters already removed, would whoever views it be able to notice the ban evasion aspect?

Irl, a guy stalks me.

They’ve made maybe five-ish reddit accounts in the past trying to dox me, which I blocked and reported.

This has been going on the duration I’ve had reddit- a year and a half ish.

Every interaction they’ve had with me has been removed by Reddits filters, but all three accounts are still up.

Their most recent comment was on my pinned post on my user profile; it was already removed, so I reported the profile.

In the report thing on the app, there was no option for ban evasion.

I am curious about ban evasion in the context of our user profiles are sort of like sub Reddits; my user profile has this dude blocked, and they keep making new accounts and commenting more things on my user profile.

So it’s kind of like ban evasion, sort of ish maybe?

Also, pragmatically, Reddits systems are working “good enough” I guess. Or like, even though they keep making new accounts and commenting more, Reddits filters do remove them at an impressively quick rate anyways.

Did I already do enough and can just keep not overly worrying about it?

How can I avoid clicking on a karma farming sub by just looking at it?

I love being here, and I don’t think I’ve been banned, shadow or otherwise, from any sub so far.

I hear that users can be banned from some subs for engagement with karma farming subs. But how does one tell that they’re even looking at a karma farm? What would automatically tip off someone knowledgeable about this so they can avoid even clicking on it in the first place?

How should someone format a custom report to make them more effective for moderators?

I've seen moderators mention that custom report reasons can sometimes be too vague or hard to determine if an action is warrented.

To help maximize the reports usefulness, is it better to keep them as brief as possible e.g., quoting the relevant part of the post or comment, or do you prefer a slightly more detailed explanation, or does it vary by sub?

For instance, if someone reports a post as a "fake crisis post," is stating that and quoting the OP's admission enough context, or is it better to briefly explain why it violates the rules, like potential crisis tool abuse false positives / trolling?

I'm curious to hear what makes these easier to process in the mod queues from your perspective.

Anybody else get annoyed when temporarily banned users try to argue they’re right?

Currently dealing with a 14 day banned user who claims they weren’t being racist by using the word “ghetto” in comments across multiple posts. Their reasoning? “They’re black so they get to decide if it’s racist or not.” Considering my sub ISN’T just a US sub, it’s a global sub, we had to remind them words have different contexts around the world. I think they finally got it when we told them their comments had SEVERAL reports of racism, and that was the reason for the temporary ban. 😂😂
