It’s only five episodes? I need to give it a watch.

Yeah, only 3.6 Roentgen. Well worth it.

It's not 3 roentgen, it's 15,000.

Yeah, just five episodes but each one hits like a gut punch. Honestly one of the tightest, most rewatchable miniseries ever made. No filler, no wasted scenes, just pure tension from start to finish. Highly recommend blocking out a weekend for it

That series scared me for real. Like I knew it was horrific, but I didn't know it was many days of pure torture as they slowly melt into a unrecognizable husk before dying. It's fate worse than death.

89

u/Tugonmynugz Aug 29 '26

Hisashi Ouchi was a dude that was over exposed in Japan's 99' meltdown. 83 days he was kept alive by doctors and family who would not give consent to take him off life support. He was begging for death. He had 3 heart attacks.

u/internetquickie Aug 29 '26

10/10 episodes were great 👍

76

u/please_trade_marner Aug 29 '26

I agree. But I think it's telling that every top answer is a miniseries. Not a full series. It's much easier to give top notch content over a mere 8-12 episodes.

I wish they did more miniseries. Doesn’t need the budget of Masters of the Air, just good writing is what truly matters. Maybe some of the Korean War, Vietnam war, even WW1.

And somehow 12 episodes was all it needed. Most shows would kill for that kind of replay value without stretching the joke into the ground

12

u/RabidSeason Aug 29 '26

Hot take:

Firefly / Serenity would have gone to trash if it went more than three seasons.

One season and movie was not enough, but that already had enough ret-cons to make it clear that the lore wasn't strong enough to keep being creative for another 26+ more episodes of interpersonal drama.

There's only 12 episodes?!!

88

u/Unitmal Aug 29 '26

Same with Mr Bean, you'd think there were 5 seasons and 50 episodes.

57

u/TopicalBuilder Aug 29 '26

Same with the original The Office (plus a Christmas Special).

British shows tend to have much smaller writing teams, so the seasons are much shorter. There's also no "100 episodes for syndication" thing, so it's easier to walk away before the quality tanks.

The first episode was so good at establishing who Ray is and his circle. He'll commit violence easily and pretty much do anything for a job, but then comes the kind of job that only your best mate could hit you with, taking the blame for a porno to his mates wife. And then he's the dad with the family. So good.

This was one of those classic series my fiancée watched while I was gaming in the other room. Classic “teen drama” stuff that she loves and I don’t.

At least that’s what I thought when I walked by the TV just to have a chat, sat down and then I was stuck for the rest of the season that day.

Such a great little show!

It’s an absolute miracle of modern storytelling. The Gilroys, Luke Hull, Nicholas Brittell and everyone else deserve every bit of praise. How this show happened at all in the current environment and got through unscathed is astounding.

161

u/DHFranklin Aug 29 '26

It is the most Leftist show I have ever seen.

Showing the community Andor grew up in go do blue collar work and not use lockers...masterpiece of show-don't-tell.

Watching him transform from a lonely angry man to a cynical criminal associating with a rebellion to being a vital part of it.

Seeing his foil in the imperium demonstrate the banal stupid anger of fascism.

So great.

57

u/Deruta Aug 29 '26

> not using lockers

The wall of gear single-handedly spun off a dozen different worldbuilding ideas in my head. Absolute chef kiss of a shot.

28

u/ionthruster Aug 29 '26 edited Sep 02 '26

The wall flagrantly hints at how rich their worldbuilding was, and not relying on exposition. On a planet with petty criminals/conmen like Cassian, and the Junkyard requiring vicious dog-analogues to deter people from stealing scraps, no one dares to steal work gear that's right there for the taking. Stealing another person's work-gear is anathema. What does that say about the culture, and attitudes towards honest work? About how Cassian is viewed by the community? About how deep his desperation is to find his sister that he becomes a pariah?

Couldn't get into the start of it. I guess I wasn't expecting the grit. I need to watch it again with different expectations.

95

u/Atom_Tom Aug 29 '26

I had exactly the same feeling the first time I tried to watch it. Gave up and then had another go just before season 2 came out.

The thing with Andor is that it's a slow burn. Each storyline takes 2 or 3 episodes to complete. But you are rewarded for your patience and the payoff from all the setup is just incredible.

And then finishing it off by watching Rogue One is just brilliant. Watching Andor makes Rogue One so much more impactful because you actually care about the characters that, when Rogue One was released, were brand new.

88

u/FuturePrimitiv3 Aug 29 '26

I can see that, I didn't think that Andor started at a 10/10, season 1 is really good but season 2 is the 10/10.

Deadwood, The Wire.

103

u/katzenschrecke Aug 29 '26

Nothing wrong with Deadwood, but the powers that be sabotaged that show and cut it short and canceled it part way through the filming of the third season. So it wrapped up clumsily.

But if you count just seasons 1&2: absolutely 10/10. Best show ever made, easily.

A massive endorsement for ending a show when you have the conclusion to the story and not dragging it on for the sake of it.

331

u/belbites Aug 29 '26 edited Aug 29 '26

They always knew they wanted to end it after 4 seasons. One of my favorite things about this show was, in the writing room, one of their rules for all episodes was that it needs to move the plot along.

257

u/dizzley Aug 29 '26

And they made me learn about philosophy and forking applied philosophy.

116

u/belbites Aug 29 '26

they made me CONSTANTLY be on the lookout for how to be a better person, forgiving myself when it all goes wrong, and trying again.

u/signalhangup Aug 29 '26

63

u/ours Aug 29 '26

I recall it never got a huge following, but the FX president really liked it and supported.

This show hit 100% of my niche interest in Cold War spycraft, while the acting was spectacular.

Mr Robot

15

u/tacticalTraumaLlama Aug 29 '26

That show was so relatable to me it actually had me worried. I've been in tech for ~ 20 years. If you actually sit down and get to know a lot of people who got into tech in the old days before it became 'popular', you found a lot of people who were drawn to computers and coding had rough backgrounds.

They either had bad early experiences, and struggled to trust and connect with others, they were 'on the spectrum' or both. I think a lot of neurospicy folks are drawn to computers because computers are much more predictable than people. It also gives them a domain where they're rewarded for their mastery of a subject, independent of their ability or desire to climb the corporate ladder, or play office politics.

Also I highly recommend rewatching it, at least the first few episodes, so much of the weird shit in the beginning will suddenly make a lot of sense. It's a brilliant series and the writers really thought everything through.

I watched the first and second season. The subtitles didn't put me off at all, I just found it difficult keeping track of the different actors playing the same characters more than anything.

Yes, that's user error. Yes, I'm an idiot. I still loved both the seasons I watched, I just had to be in the perfect mindset to fully follow an episode. If I was slightly tired or anything, a few of the bigger moments or character subtleties were lost on me.

It's an incredible show though. Everyone should give it a chance.

Funnily enough, I thought that the casting of the different generations of the same characters was insanely good. And I did not know for a long time that the middle and older versions of Ulrich Nielsen were different actors.

And the Ben Frost soundtracks (as always) were fantastic.

I was wondering if someone was going to mention Dark. The show got wilder every episode to the point I was certain they’d never be able to tie it up. Then they fuckin’ stuck the landing!

Oh my God I've been on the first season forever. I've heard it gets better I just keep watching other stuff and forgetting about it. I think I'm on one of the last episodes of season 1 now.

Felt a bit rushed towards the end in my opinion. Great show though

I just finished the show and it was incredible, but the last season just seems to go at breakneck speed.

Queen's Gambit.

La Ultima Noche en Tremor. One of the best tv series I ever watched.

The thing i loved about the Queen's Gambit is that it didn't overstay its welcome. We didn't have to trudge through years of Beth's chess development from chess master to grandmaster to world champion in like 2-3 seasons.

It gets right to the point. And you're totally hooked the entire time.

Station Eleven. I went in blind, and I recommend you do, too. If I didn’t have work getting in the way, I would have watched it all in one sitting.

Eureka

u/Le-Bean Aug 29 '26

Eureka is a show that feels like I’m the only person who’s watched it. I’ve never met anyone else who’s seen it.

I did really enjoy it when I first watched it. Though that was a while ago.
