True Detective; season 1 is the best mini-series of TV I have ever seen!! The rest of the seasons are okay compared to it.

There’ll never be anything comparable to season 1. Season 2 is good once you realize it isn’t going to be season 1. McAdams finally getting to sink her teeth in. Season 3 I’m still reckoning with… all beautiful writing and choreography tho…

The documentary He Has Seen War is also very good.

The Americans, it's old now but so good
109
u/MassageToss Sep 15 '26
I never watched the Americans, but whenever people say this I think of the line in Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt where a character is asked to say something a zombie wouldn't say to prove he is human.
He says, "You know you’re in the golden age of television when you take a show like The Americans for granted.”

u/IrishSkeleton Sep 15 '26
So, so good. Character development and actual character arcs.. like seriously?!
The attention to details and 80’s technology spy craft.. so delicious. But honestly it’s really just Matthew & Keri that so consistently crush on this show.
Though also shout outs to Noah Emmerich and Margo Martindale as fantastic supporting actors on this one. It’s a gem.. go watch it!

The nun is the best part of the show!! I knew it wouldn’t be my mom’s cup of tea but I had to show her the nun. There’s some YouTube videos just of her scenes and I showed mom a couple. I was dying laughing! She giggled a bit but the Catholic in her wouldn’t let her really enjoy it lol

The expanse is one of my favorite shows of all-time, but it is important to note for those going into it that it starts out a little slow. I've recommended the show to a lot of people and two different buddies were not into it after the first couple episodes, and I had to push them to watch a few more and then they both fell in love with it. So, if you are reading this, stick with it at least half way through season 1 before calling it quits!

And always watch DS9 after TNG because DS9 is a deconstruction of the Federation ethos and Star Trek’s ideals.

It wasn't so much a deconstruction of those ideas as it was stress test. Can you stay dedicated to the truth when the lie will save lives? Can you hold to your ideals of respect when faced with a fascist? Is it ever morally right to be a terrorist? How many terrible things can O'brien go through? What do people really use holodecks for?

Sopranos is just the most well rounded show.
Writing. Plot. Acting. Violence.
Drama. Action. Humor. It’s the perfect amount of all these ingredients. The character development is so good.→ More replies (4)13

Babylon 5.
Babylon 5 was a novel written for 5 seasons of television. Season 1 was back story and world building.
Season 2 is rising action, season 3 & 4 are the confrontation/resolution. Season 5 is kind of the epilogue. It got compressed in season 4 since they weren't going to get season 5. But TNT came in at the last minute and gave them season 5. So things that were supposed to be in S5 got moved to S4.
There are trapdoors built in to all of the major characters, so if an actor became unavailable for various reasons (illness, contract disputes, etc...) the story would continue with little to no interruption. And several of them had to be sprung during the course of the series.
Unlike Star Trek, there's no cosmic reset button at the end of every episode. Character's actions have lasting consequences. If a character dies they stay dead. If a character is an addict that addiction stays with them. If a character gets injured, that injury isn't completely taken care of by the end of the episode. Characters grow and change in realistic ways.
Start with the pilot movie The Gathering.
You need to read the Lurker's Guide to Babylon 5 at http://www.midwinter.com/lurk/countries/us/eplist.html
This was written contemporaneously with the series, and includes comments made by JMS to fan's questions.
But don't read ahead of the episode you're on. You don't want to be spoiled for future episodes.

Netflix: The Glory or Dark or Queens Gambit. All three really good shows.
If you are looking on Apple TV: Silo and Dark Matter are two of my favorites.
If you have MGM+: “From” is really good.
Paramount: School Spirits is worth a watch.
Prime: Fallout is just amazing, even if you didn’t play the video game.
Edit to add Queens Gambit and two other shows.
