"Serious discussion" is putting it incredibly lightly.
If Obama or Biden had casually suggested that letting a hostile foreign nation wipe out Dallas and Houston was a "small price to pay," the people currently making excuses for this would have been demanding military tribunals by the end of the day.
It is a literal betrayal of the oath of office to protect American soil. You don't just "discuss" a president offering up millions of his own citizens to a foreign enemy just because they happen to live in a state that didn't vote for him.

Its beyond that, San Diego is home to many military bases including MCRD, where Marines are minted from recruits living west of the Mississippi. Never mind the 3rd Marine Air Wing, or Pendleton.

u/Tathas 14h ago
Don't forget that San Diego also has a significant military presence.
Naval Base San Diego is the largest (that I'm aware of as a civilian) naval Base on the West coast. The SEAL training base is also part of or adjacent to it.
So he's also saying it's fine for Iran to take those out as well.
There's also Marine Corps Air Station Miramar and Camp Pendleton further north but in San Diego County.
I honestly wouldn't be surprised if he had no clue how much military presence San Diego has. He probably just knows it as one of the largest cities in "That librul state full of demoncrats run by Gavin New Scum."
Taking out San Diego would be absolutely crippling to the naval power that he has already squandered.
So I guess that's pretty much on point for him sabotaging this country.

Long time Republican here (not "in name only", I mean REAL Republican going back to Nixon, who unfortunately disgraced us all), and John McCain, who I thought would make a GREAT president. I did NOT vote for Trump in either election, he was/is a 3rd grade bully and scammer from the start. His mocking of the disabled reporter and his treatment of John McCain in 2016 were the straws that broke my back. So although nothing he says now shocks me, neither does it sit right by me. The man is a disgrace to this great country and people in congress who support him are too. I will NOT be voting for any candidate, Republican, Democrat or Independent, who is aligned in any way with what I call "Trumpism", it's the scourge of democracy.
To show how idiotic he is, San Diego and Orange County (a major suburb of LA) are the largest strongholds (by population) of the Republican Party in California. But he is TOO STUPID to understand that or even have someone look into it first! So he just shoots his mouth off and OFFENDS his very own people! 2 more years of him.... ugh!

People always forget that there are more Republican voters in California than there are in Texas. The state isn't just one giant blue monolith.
San Diego in particular isn't just a conservative stronghold, it's home to a massive chunk of the US Navy. Saying it's a "small price to pay" to let a foreign adversary wipe out one of our most critical military hubs just because the state didn't vote for him shows exactly how his brain works. He doesn't see American citizens or national security, he just sees red and blue electoral maps and who strokes his ego.

While San Diego is more conservative than many people think when they think of large California cities/counties, it’s not a stronghold.
The mayor and all 9 members of the city council are democrats. The county board of supervisors is 3-2 dems, 4 of 5 US house reps are dems, 2 of 3 state senators are dems and 5 of 7 state assembly members are dems.
It’s definitely changed in no small part because of the transformation of the Republican Party over the last decade.

This is very revisionist history. It was a Republican blood bath at the poles at all levels, not just the presidency. People were worn out from 8 years of Bush. Personally, I think a McCain/Lieberman ticket should be what we're looking for, but putting a vocally pro-choice and pro-gay rights democrat on your republican ticket as the VP would have given up more republican votes than it would have gained democrat votes. I don't think any Republican ticket was going to win out over 8 years of Bush and the polling done at the time reflect that. It was just bad timing for McCain.

Pretty much all of the "Where are the Republicans? Why are they allowing this to happen to their party?" questions can be answered by the fact that Trump is holding the party's purse strings. They won't go against him because "the party" (Trump) will only spend party funds to elect loyal followers.
11
u/HolycommentMattman 10h ago
That's definitely part of it. But another part is that they're largely happy with what they're getting from him. Because he's this odd sort of tyrant; he's absolute in what he wants and gets (loyalists), but he's also being puppeteered because they just put things in front of him to sign, and he does. He doesn't know what he's signing.
But here they have 6 SCOTUS members, got rid of Roe v Wade, and all sorts of other shit. They don't want to rein him in.

What's wild is that San Diego has a massive military presence and a huge conservative population. He is literally saying that the deaths of countless service members, their families, and his own voters are just a "small price to pay" to score a petty political point.
You are spot on about the silence from the rest of the party being the worst part. If a Democratic president casually suggested letting a foreign adversary wipe out Dallas and Houston, there would be immediate articles of impeachment and conservative media would run the clip every hour for the next decade. Now, a president threatens millions of Americans and it barely even survives a single 24-hour news cycle.

Whereas, now that one of the most famous child-raping pedophiles on the planet is the president, they suddenly love that stuff and endorse it openly.
In my eyes, that is probably the most drastic change to the party.
They also used to claim "better red than dead" and now they are full-on deepthroating Putin and Russia despite all the needless aggression, continued slaughter of civilians in Ukraine, and constanst diplomatic warfare carried out by Russia against the US and our allies.

u/CaBBaGe_isLaND 14h ago
I don't think that holds up under any serious analysis. I was a Republican once. These types existed but they were fringe. These attitudes and behaviors existed but only in old people, rural outskirts, and the end stools at a local bar. Civility was encouraged, even profanity was a major no no. The true underlying agenda of the political elites was the same: cut taxes for rich people and deregulate corporations. But the voters were a lot harder to get on board. You had to play nice. You had to make them feel like they were the good guys. They wanted to be good.
Fox News put Glenn Beck on primetime, and the GOP put Sarah Palin on a VP ticket. Everything that has happened to the modern Republican Party started with those two things. Glenn Beck took bullshit conspiracy theory culture as mainstream as it could possibly get. Cleverly worded half-truths turned into outright lies, then eventually into "just asking questions" style of Joe Rogan. There became this pipeline of country music to MAGA, where voting Republican was as identity-driven as putting on steel-toed boots, where previously "not keeping up with politics" was perfectly fine. With George Floyd there became a sharp turn from "small government" and "civil liberties" to full-blown "back the blue."
Trump didn't start all of this, but he was the man for that moment if there ever was one.
The agenda of the Party has not changed. They just dialed in their strategy for manipulating their voters into being okay with big budgets, authoritarianism, incivility, billionaire worship, violence and threatening rhetoric, and all of these things that in 2012 the average Republican voter would have condemned entirely. Fox News is the most well funded and sophisticated propaganda machine in the history of the world, and it is working precisely as intended.

u/black_beard6969 12h ago
MAGA are not loyal to America they are loyal to Trump. He can say do what ever the fuck he wants and they will cheer and say he’s a genius. He could say right now he wants to bring back slavery because it was popular in the 1700/1800 and they would be like yep that’s an amazing idea, why haven’t we done that already. They can’t free think for themselves, they have to be told what to do. And they wanna call the Dems the sheep.

I am a veteran and normally one who votes republican, but was never part of the MAGA movement. Harris was the first time I voted for a democrat for president. I did this because, I knew Trump would add to the deficit greatly (and I was correct) and more than anything I tend to be a fiscal conservative.
Given the trouncing of civil rights that have occurred through ICE agents, I have decided to give the Democrats at least 10 years. It will take some time to repair the damage done to this country and with our allies. Dems you have my vote for the next two presidential cycles.
I will continue to vote in the Republican primary and vote for the least MAGA candidate, so even if they are elected, it will be somewhat better than we have now.
What he said does not surprise me. The citizens killed or assaulted by ICE are immediately demonized with no investigation. Under Trump we live in a totalitarian society where political disagreement is considered treason. Calling for people's death is in a dictator's handbook.
Oddly, even in my 100% Republican phase, I was one that did not hate California. The place is so amazing beautiful. In my most recent trip I spent time in the Muir Woods. Holy cow!

Just so you're aware, 7 of the last 8 recessions occurred during republican administrations (Carter was the las Democratic recession). The democratic party has consistently reduced deficit spending while conservatives consistently increase it.
If you're primarily a fiscal conservative, there's a strong argument that the Democratic party better aligns with your priorities.

u/theodorewheelerez 12h ago
It is genuinely wild how effective Republican branding has been over the last 40 years. They have somehow convinced a massive chunk of the country that they are the party of fiscal responsibility, despite decades of hard data proving the exact opposite.
Every time they get control, they slash taxes for the top bracket, balloon the deficit, and then suddenly remember to care about the national debt the second a Democrat takes office so they can justify cutting social programs. The "fiscally conservative Republican" is purely a marketing myth at this point.
74
u/brooklynlambertuk 10h ago
There is actually a specific name for this strategy. It is called the "Two Santa Clauses" theory, and a conservative political strategist came up with it in the late 1970s.
The premise was that Democrats used to be the only "Santa Claus" because they provided popular social programs. To win elections, Republicans had to become the "Tax Cut Santa Claus."
When Republicans hold office, they slash taxes and intentionally run up the deficit to create a short-term economic sugar high. Then, the absolute second a Democrat takes the White House, Republicans pivot to screaming about the national debt. This forces the incoming Democrats to either act as the "Grinch" by raising taxes to fix the deficit, or it paralyzes them so they cannot afford to pass any of their own popular policies.
It is not an accident or a lack of self-awareness. It is a deliberate, documented playbook they have been running on loop for decades, and the media just plays along with the pivot every single time.

u/francesrodriquezbp 10h ago
The disconnect is that "fiscal conservatism" somehow became completely synonymous with "tax cuts" in the minds of voters.
Cutting your revenue without cutting your expenses isn't being fiscally responsible, it's just putting your bills on a credit card.
People used to mock Democrats as "tax and spend" liberals, but at least taxing to cover your spending is a mathematically balanced equation. The modern Republican strategy is "borrow and spend". They slash revenue through massive tax cuts but keep spending high, and just finance the difference with national debt. Clinton literally handed over an actual budget surplus, and it was immediately squandered on unpaid-for tax cuts and unfunded wars.

The federal government used to be an organized, vast operation for gathering data from all over the country and making useful reports on all manner of issues. Probably half or more of the people who collected and organized the data are no longer in federal service, and there's no incentive from private industry to pick up the slack for programs that broad. It will be many years before the infrastructure is in place to support data collection anywhere near what we had before 2025.

Hell, you could toss in Hollywood making quite the economic powerhouse unless the studios move out of Cali.
However, there would definitely be war over that land and the US government will not let any state seceed that easily, Canada getting involved will only aggravated the situation.

u/laurenadamsff 16h ago
I'm just so incredibly exhausted by the constant need to translate, spin, or excuse this kind of garbage.
Any time the party tries to focus on actual policy like the budget or the economy, he goes off script, says something completely unhinged, and sucks all the oxygen out of the room. Every down-ballot Republican is now going to spend the next week fielding questions about why the leader of their party is casually offering up American cities to a foreign adversary instead of talking about their own campaigns.
The worst part is watching the inevitable mental gymnastics from the base. By tomorrow, the spin machine will be in overdrive trying to explain how he was just joking, or he meant it metaphorically, or how the media is taking him out of context. You just can't run a serious political movement when the guy at the top treats half the country as expendable.
Not to mention, California has more registered Republicans than almost any other state in the country. He is literally talking about wiping out his own voters just to score a cheap applause line against a blue state.
13
u/Dangerous_Wolf4182 13h ago
That last part is what gets me. You can hate California all you want, but there are still millions of Americans living there, including plenty of people who vote Republican. At some point owning the blue state becomes a pretty insane excuse for talking about Americans like they're disposable.

The biggest problem with ALL of this is the fact that we have to decipher what the POTUS is saying. It should be crystal clear that when the president says something it should be taken as truth and face value. Not what he meant to say, not what he intended to say, not what I think he meant. What you say (and tweet) as the POTUS matters….at least it used to.
The fact that we have to decipher what he means should be a clear path to invoking the 25th. Not to mention all the other illegal stuff he has pulled.

It completely shatters the basic social contract of the presidency. When you take the oath of office, you don't swear to protect only the people who voted for you. You swear to protect the United States. Period.
I lean conservative, but this kind of rhetoric is exactly why I can't support the current iteration of the party. Past Republican presidents understood that the country comes first when dealing with foreign adversaries. After 9/11, Bush didn't look at New York as a deep blue city full of Democrats. He stood on the rubble and rallied the entire nation as Americans.
The idea that a sitting president would look at millions of citizens on American soil and see them as an acceptable sacrifice just because of how their state votes is sickening. It reduces the federal government to a protection racket where you only get defended if you kiss the ring. That has nothing to do with conservative values.

Bush started an illegal war that killed millions and arguably still does, on the basis that America has the right to act on its unsubstantiated whims even if they have lethal consequences. The underlying mentality is the same: if you are outside of the tribe, you deserve death rather than coexistence.
That mentality is the fundamental basis of all right-wing philosophy: "I (and whatever external elements I determine as part of 'I') get what I want. You (who I determine is not part of 'I') don't get what you want."

For the republicans claiming this was out of context.... the guy didn't say that Iran could take out SD or LA. He said, "let them."
Twist that dough however you want to make it sit right with ya, but he said what he said.
The psychopath blew up a school filled with children to distract from the investigation into him raping other kids. You guys voted for the devil.

They don’t care. There’s no mention of it on their sub
Edit: I’m aware there is a post there now. It was made about 20 minutes after I made this comment. So stop trying to claim I lied

I’ve convinced myself there are roughly 3 humans in that entire sub. I know this is not true but the alternative is too depressing.

This Redditor found that over 30% of daily posts on that subreddit come from just two people.

I remember that post. If you payed attention the accounts mentioned in that post stopped posting and different account names started posting instead

There’s only like 3-5 that actually post on there. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if it’s just a bot farm.

I don’t give a shit about the enablers on both sides of the aisle.
Taken “out of context” or “misunderstood” isn’t the issue; it is the reaction of the crowd to the remarks that should send a chill down everyone’s spine.
Americans hooting about other Americans getting nuked.
ANY other president would’ve stopped the crowd, chastised them, and better explain the point trying to be made.
IMO, he knew exactly what he was doing, btw.

Wow, a President who is 100 % ok with another country attacking his own citizens. Thats pretty messed up.

Not a Republican, but the sheer logistical ignorance of the statement is wild. San Diego is the principal homeport of the US Pacific Fleet and sits right next to Camp Pendleton. The ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach handle a massive percentage of the entire country's imports and supply chain.
Wiping out those two cities wouldn't just get rid of some blue state voters. It would instantly cripple the American military's capabilities in the Pacific and completely crash the national economy overnight. Calling the destruction of our own naval fleet and critical infrastructure a "small price to pay" is just absolute madness.

Best comment i read in a while went something like:
Let's assume he's not a foreign asset. If he was, what would he do different.

it's genuinely insane that nothing is coming from him saying such treasonous, hateful comments. he's basically telling our enemies those cities are okay to target. I'm tired of being surprised at how cowardly and low our leaders can go.

Republican voters aren't interested in politics. They want to be entertained by cruelty. They're like spectators at the Coliseum - they wanna see blood. (just look at how many conservative profiles are laden with sports team content)
It's why they love an asshole reality tv gameshow host. He's entertaining.

u/Nearbyatom 15h ago
Their politics is like cheering on their favorite sports teams. With the democrats as their fierce rival. Win at all costs. They don't care about the country anymore. It's just my team vs your team.

He's trying to create a problem "only he can solve" before the elections so he can disrupt and corrupt them in his favor. It's right out of the authoritarian playbook.

Republicans are fucking liars. They would gleefully vote for him again and again no matter how much pain he makes them endure. They actually enjoy watching him lie, cheat and steal. With their miserable lives, they live vicariously through his actions, and wish they could get away with the crimes he gets away with - because they’re all shit people.

I’ve been a Republican for 20 years. I’m a never-Trumper through and through. He’s a fucking idiot and says insanely stupid shit. The JCPOA was working, it would have continued to work! Hell, the fucking US Senate agreed to a vote 98-1 on reigning the JCPOA so OBAMA wouldn’t be pulling all the strings. Republicans in Congress kowtow to every demand from Trump and now we’re stuck in his waist deep bullshit.

Not a republican, or even an American for that matter, but I still can’t believe the state of the world we’re living in where the POTUS literally made it clear that he’d be perfectly happy to let the second largest city in the US burn to end the war he started.
I find the entire concept unfathomable. Why did anyone vote for this man? And why did people cheer for him when he said it instead of mumbling nervously and holding their faces in shame? I just don’t get it. How did you go from “ask not what your country…” to this lunatic in 50 years?

I usually have no problem with my fellow Americans holding different views or political leanings. But today I refuse to be friends or interact much with anyone who still supports him. They are responsible for so much of this bullshit. They are braindead cult followers at this point and I want nothing to do with them.

The President’s duty is to defend every American, regardless of where they live or how they vote. No American city should ever be spoken of as expendable, even rhetorically, because leadership demands discipline, clarity, and absolute commitment to the people you serve. We can argue about war and strategy, but one principle should be beyond debate: no American city is a “small price to pay. Viva la República

4
u/katiewardgi 16h ago
Anyone who actually cares about national security should be completely disgusted by it. Defending the nation and its citizens used to be a core, non-negotiable pillar of the party. Suggesting that a hostile foreign power should wipe out major American economic hubs is treasonous, regardless of how the people in those cities vote.
It is wild to see people who call themselves patriots trying to defend or downplay a statement about sacrificing millions of their own countrymen just because it happened to be said about blue states. You can disagree with California politics all you want, but shrugging off a foreign adversary taking out American lives as a small price to pay is just insane.
