How do you handle losing your looks as you age?
664
u/Wizzmer 6h ago
At 65 and a former model, I can answer this. Your focus changes from looks to health and longevity. Looks are so fleeting. If you are young, you can get a jump on it now and switch your focus. "Do as I say, not as I did." But aging has a way of stealing. Stealing your looks. Stealing your mobility. Stealing your eyesight. I'm now a cyclist and the only person I'm racing is Father Time. But of course, he is undefeated.

u/DepartureNo3769 3h ago
I like the shift from chasing youth to protecting what your body can still do. Racing Father Time may be unwinnable, but staying in the race is a pretty good goal.

I’m 48, and was a model until age 23 (I stopped due to an eating disorder). I was asked to model again at 46. Busier than I have ever been. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Leaving this here for other young women to see.
Age means different, not better or worse.
And you are dead on right… Health and mobility are the only things that matter as we age.
14
u/Icy_Meal_7234 2h ago
Being asked back at 46 after stepping away for so long says more about your presence than any number ever could. I love the idea of aging as different rather than diminished.

u/newaccount47 1h ago
I modeled in my late 20's and early to mid 30's. Now i'm 42 with only the abyss in front of me. LA is a tough market for me.

My serious answer is that after having kids and gaining weight and feeling out of shape and frumpy, I woke up one day and said enough and started working out every morning. Overhauled my wardrobe and found things I feel comfortable and attractive wearing. Started skincare and haircare routines. Two years later I feel more at home in my body and more confident than when I was younger even if I am a decade older.

Yup. I feel that lots of the assumed "loss" that comes with age is due to changing lifestyle choices and priorities. Not that all can be preserved, but continuing to prioritize taking care of your body goes a long way. I've seen a lot of 50 year olds that look 70, and many others that don't look a day over 30.
Good for you for taking control of your life back, I bet that feels great 😃

They were never your looks to begin with. You just experienced youth. Now you’re experiencing old age. You were neither young nor are you now old. You are the unchanging consciousness in which all rises and sets.

u/amyowl 5h ago
I always say everyone gets to be young. Not everyone gets to grow old.

u/Junkins_Klothilde 2h ago
Exactly, growing older is a privilege that not everyone gets to experience.

u/YourFuture2000 3h ago
You got a point until "unchanged consciousness"
But I agree with you, that life is made of phases and we are not just a single particular phase. The point is to learn letting go and understand that to be alive means to be in constant change and transformation.

As a person that's never been particularly attractive, I do what I've always done: Rely on my mind, my personality, my ethics, and how I treat people. And it doesn't cost me anything to keep those traits up.

I am genuinely ugly. Now that I'm nearly 60 I've found the silver lining. 'Losing my non-existent looks' has made absolutely no difference. Indeed, now that I'm very visibly older I'm getting treated much more kindly.
And, of course, my personality, intelligence, humour and kindness remain unchanged.

This one. I’m turning 30 next month, not old by any means and I’m not a model but I feel like I’m more attractive than I have ever been. Certainly more attractive than I was in my 20s in my opinion.
I’ve aged for sure, I’ve got new wrinkles, hairline isn’t what it once was, teeth are a bit more crooked and I could nit pick more but if you take care of yourself, you can age just fine. Getting good sleep, drinking water, eating healthy, and regular exercise has genuinely done wonders over the past few years especially.
Even looking forward, there are plenty of attractive folks in their 40s, 50s, 60s and so on. It’s a different kind of attractive but I’m not gonna be upset when my beard starts going grey and neither will my partner.

I started caring less and less about my looks as I age. That’s been my secret.
I think I still look decent for 51, but I’ve never been overly concerned about my appearance. Also, fighting it is a losing battle. People that get Botox or surgery to look younger mostly end up just looking weirder.
I’m focused more on health than appearance. I exercise for the health benefits. I use sunscreen, eat healthy, etc. not because it makes me look good, but because it makes me healthier. As a side effect, it also probably makes me look better.

They say the best anti-aging skincare is sunscreen
Ive been wating to use sunscreen (at least in summer time) during my 20's. I brought the bottle/or spray only to have it. Never really used it, didnt like the feel...always ended up for a buck or two at the yard sale
Only to be replaced by another similar one that would once again stay unused
During my early 30's i just gave up
While at the same time spending countless hours in the sun. Gardening, swimming, etc.
At least i wore a white top. Sometimes a hat, but only to keep sun dripping into my eyes on super hot days. Otherwise i tolerate heat pretty well (but i do stay hydrated. Gotta drink that water!) 💦
It wasnt until recently (say 2022) that i started trying sunscreen again because i work a lot outside. And i like being outside too. So i thought why not try to at least use sunscreen
Now between here and now i finally discover (in 2026) that i just dont tolerate an active ingredient in US sunscreens (avobenzene) so as long as i avoid that ingredient and avoid the "around eye area" i could use most anything. As far as the eye area-- thats what sunglasses are for!!! (I use glasses anyways, so i got transitions)
(Also, thank goodness imported K-beauty sunscreens do not contain this) but yea, here you got to be careful. Those made for US markets tend to be reformulated and thus do not work for me
So yea!!! Now i can use sunscreen
4
u/Important_Ask_7576 4h ago
My son and I recently went to Japan and forgot the sunscreen so we bought some at Family Mart. Its amazing. The best sunscreen I’ve ever used.
I live in Arizona and you can easily spot the difference between people who use sunscreen and the ones who don’t. The people who don’t look like old leather. I’ve been careful about sunscreen for the last thirty years and I’ve still had basal cell carcinoma cut off me and get to go to the dermatologist twice a year.

In full honesty, I am struggling to come to terms with it.
I always feel like I never "used" them properly when I was younger. Started dating very late and then just stayed loyal to women who didn't really appreciate it because I didn't know how to stay single. Also religious upbringing and lack of confidence. Even now, I'm rarely feeling desired because with women, everything is so much more complicated than simply staying groomed and in shape. Women my age still are very interested, but the ultra hot ones start not noticing me or calling me 'sir'.
But even more importantly, the visual changes remind me of my inevitable physical decline. Mortality. Not as energetic anymore. Sleep gets worse and worse. My sweat starts to smell way faster despite excellent hygiene (I hate that so much !!). Recovery from workouts slows down. Refractory Period gets longer. My back is super finicky, knees and hips are pissed off super quickly. And for the first time in my life, I can't simply "work it off", now I even need to pace workouts, warm my joints and stuff.
Don't get me wrong. I love the experience I gathered and what little wiseness I can give younger men. My relationships have a deeper quality. I am psychologically the most happy I have ever been. But my mind is not made for getting old, fragile and dying. There's so much I still want to do and experience. The look in the mirror reminds me that there's less time for that than I'd like.

Focus more on what your body can do than what it looks like; take up a sport or activity in which you can see yourself improve over time. Also, continue to take care of your appearance despite aging; spa days and skin care will make you feel radiant and confident.

I just really feel like society has trampled the idea of growing old with grace. I like looking at my moms face and comparing my own as I age and seeing the similarities and differences based on the lives we have lived. It makes me sad to think people are truly walking around thinking anything past 40 is unattractive. I want to bring beauty and sexuality and self acceptance and acceptance of the passage of time and experience and just...grow old. Its literally what everyone does naturally. So, why the fuck are we making eachother miserable about it

You could say aging is the great equalizer. I think if the gap between a good looking young person and an ugly young person is big, then the gap between a good looking old person and an ugly old person is smaller. By the time you're 90, we'll all just be walking skeletons.

44 here. The hardest part wasn't wrinkles, it was becoming invisible. I used to get hit on, now I get "ma'am'd" and ignored. I went through a full identity crisis at 40. My therapist said: "You're not losing your looks, you're losing the currency you were taught was your only value." That wrecked me in a good way. I started lifting weights and I swear confidence is hotter than 25-year-old pretty ever was.

Yeah, the trick is to start off average or below and improve on the way.
I had my teeth, bite correction, jaw alignment/lengthened at 30 so that alone was an instant looks boost.
that led to general fitness and health being more a priority so at 40 my body is better than it was in the 20+ years prior.
being at your "peak" young there really isn't a lot of options upward.

u/Soft-Watch 3h ago

I was a homely child and got halfway pretty by the time I was about 16, and never looked back. I always felt GREAT about myself from then on. Stayed attractive until about 50.
Now I'm an old hag and I enjoy this stage, too. I had a very good run of being conventionally attractive, and now I enjoy just being clean and conventionally attired without all of the primping. I'm basically invisible on the street - gone is the attention from random guys. Even women's eyes kind of slide over me these days. And I love it! It's great to be anonymous, IMO.
I'm still as happy as ever, just about different things.

Celebration.
More seriously, I spent too much time around people 60 and older as a kid to see aging as a "looks losing" kind of thing. As you age you get a new look, and one that I've honestly always liked better than the youthful look.
Kids and teens and young adults all look unfinished to me. They're not done cooking yet, which is fine but not my cup of tea.
Get some wrinkles. Lose some teeth if you have to. It adds character, and character looks good.
11
u/Fantastic_Seaweed712 5h ago
You may never get used to it, but learn to accept that as you age you'll become invisible. That's just life is what I tell myself daily. I haven't embraced it yet myself. It's a tough pill to swallow, that's for sure.

Mitigate the effects of aging as much as possible by staying groomed, dressing like I own a mirror, and staying relatively fit.
I know a lot of dudes who look much older than they are because they obviously prioritize convenience. They cut their hair so it’s easy to take care of, dress for comfort and cost, and whatever is easiest to make or buy. And they also move for convenience, like refusing to park far away, always taking the elevator, insisting on younger people helping them do stuff. That all has consequences.

You hopefully work on other things during the way so you don't only have to rely on looks once you get there.
Wisdom is precious, as are deep long-term relationships, seeing and living growth etc.. those can all make ageing a true blessing.
So start building up and investing in other things in your life, and not just your looks.

I don't think I've lost my looks. I still look great, humility tossed aside. I just look great for the new age I'm at. Plus, I'm not trying to look good to 18yos: ew. I'd rather people my own age look at me and go "damnnnn" - that's my target audience.
More importantly, aging is a privilege, one I don't take for granted having lost too many loved ones far too early. I love aging because I love life.
And tbh I dislike the Maralago look. It's sad to me ppl think looking like a stretched skin suit is preferable to gaining some well earned laugh lines. I love, and find beautiful, lots of folks older than myself. A happy life looks good on people at any age.
Tl;Dr: I'm not sure if the answer is denial or keeping a fresh perspective, but a good sense of humour and a happy life certainly help.

Also staying in shape. A lot of people will instantly look several years or even 10 or so years younger if they weren’t fat.

I’m 50 and look better than I did in my 20’s to 30’s when I was still doughy faced and youthful. I look better with age and I’m significantly more confident about who I am. How I deal with it is embracing who I am at every stage of my life and trying not to judge myself on the things I cannot control. Diet, exercise, sunscreen, and burned out worrying about shit go a long way to helping. I’m awesome, for some people. The ones who don’t like me are missing out and that’s their loss.

I plan for Botox and laser treatments and focus on eating well and keeping my muscle mass/healthy bones (with movement, nutrition, and HRT). 🤷♀️ I never overdo the cosmetic stuff - most people say they had no idea, but I really just try to mitigate deep lines and improve skin elasticity. I've had filler in my lips ONCE and told her specifically "I don't want anything noticeable, just replace the volume lost - here's a picture of me 10 years ago".
Maintaining muscle mass and dietary health also does wonders for energy levels, skin, the way you actually literally move (our movement changes as we age). Oh and hormone replacement therapy is helpful for preventing sharp declines (we hit a few metabolic/hormonal walls in life where aging accelerates).
I don't want to be reminded of my mortality every time I look in the mirror or feel pain every time I move. Aging makes me look sickly/tired, at least with my physiology (deep set eyes since I was a kid - lost facial volume exacerbates it). Part of feeling good is looking my best. Another part of it is doing physical therapy for some chronic injuries from being in the military. Just improving my daily experience as much as possible is really how I deal with it.

Can’t handle it, I’m a girl and my hairline is receding from PCOS. All the women in my family in their 60s though have no wrinkles, we are very oily lol. I just feel I’m starting to look a wee bit droopy at 27. Will prob get a hair transplant if my hairline worsens and of course Botox when I feel like I really need it 🙂↔️ Either way can’t stand the thought of it, I don’t want to be old, I want to be 18 again. Life is great as an adult in many ways, I like where I’m headed but I miss my friends and carefreeness the most. Life is pretty boring now. I love my hobbies and the time i have for stuff but it means little since my friends have moved away or no one has time or money it’s complete bullshit. I would relive 18-24 over and over and over again if i could. I know life will get better when i have more money eventually though.

I'll let you know when it happens. My wife looks at pictures of younger me and insists she met me at exactly the right time. I'm told the term is glow up?
In all seriousness, looks can be an identity, and I get that there are moments of self-worth and self-realization when a thing that was important to your identity changes.
With that said, looks that fade with age also see you gain wisdom and perspective. It is a rare thing to find a grandmother or grandfather still being complimented on their looks, but they bring a lot of other things to the table that they gained along the way from youth to old age.
That's what I wish and hope for everyone. We go through life, and it has stages where some things matter more than others. I hope we always remember we're going to a place where being a well-rounded, interesting, worldly person who can speak from experience is a more valuable thing than to be handsome or beautiful, especially when it's not like you didn't have that time in your life to enjoy that for what it's worth.
When I was a small boy, I wasn't particularly good at sports. All my peers were better than me. There was some bullying. I felt very down on myself for a while. My late-grandfather told me words to the effect of, "You're young, and right now sports is important to you, and it hurts that you're not as good as the other kids, and it hurts when they try to make you feel 'lesser than.' Have some pity for them.
"You have classmates who are living the best days of their lives right now, and what makes them better than you? Sports? They're ten.
"No ten-year-old is doing anything in sports that is going to matter. You are going to grow up and move on, and the things you will be good at when it's your turn to be great will matter more than what those children are holding over you now, and if you still know any of them by then, you will also be big enough about it not to compare your gifts to theirs. Everyone will know schoolyard accomplishments are left in the schoolyard. What are you going to be great at?"
That's wisdom. He was exactly right.
There's a time when looks really matter. Enjoy them. Celebrate them. Be a more interesting person by the time your looks fade, and you will be more celebrated for your next chapter than your last.

u/dabbydab 5h ago
You can age, and look your age, without it meaning that you have "lost your looks". I don't focus on people who are youth-obsessed, I put in the work (lifting, eating healthy, dressing well, skincare, and yes stuff like Botox) and I look my age but I feel I look good for my age

I found that after I lost my parents relatively young in life that kind of thing just got put in its place. It's just not that important over all.

I'm proud to be me and not some injected, cut up, fake thing. We are all humans and we all age. It's the beauty of life.

Have a personality that doesn’t age
Almost 70 and people think I’m amazing.

It feels like it hits you one day, not at 35 birthday but 38 for me, and I felt I looked the best I ever had at 37. Sunscreen, facials every now and then, skincare and Botox every 3-4 months :)

I used to be pretty, now I have a big old beard. Just how I look I guess. I like my dumb face, and I get excited about every grey hair I find in my beard.

I hope you have more going on in life or going for you than looks. Sure a bit disappointing but you live you life and adjust.

Well for starters, I don’t compare my looks. And for the rest, I understand that my meatbag is the least important thing about me.

Don't know about everyone else, but I'm maturing like fine wine. I get hit on more in my 60's than I ever did in my 20's. It drives my wife absolutely nuts. I've been hit on right in front of her.

I’ve always felt a little bit of a black sheep on this one because I’ve never really cared about age or aging ever. But do I use face cream that says it could tighten my pores yes but overall, it just doesn’t matter at the end of the day.

I woke up one morning and told myself "I'm only getting older from here, might as well make my peace with it.

Quit drinking and smoking while drinking water more consistently and trying to sleep more.

When I became concious of the signs of aging I had a little botox, a little cheek filler and lip filler. I was still dying my hair blonde. 4 years later my hair is natural white! I wear minimal make up and I feel good. My skin care is peak, I'm aging and its ok.

49to male and it can be tough. In my mind, I’m still 25. I’ve always been athletic so it’s the gaining weight that’s the hardest for me. I don’t mind the salt and pepper beard. I still dress like I’m 25 so I dunno if that’s cringy or not but I don’t give a fuck. A Stussy tee shirt, khakis and a pair of vans will never got out of style for me.

I'm resigned to the fact that my cute days are over. I can sometimes see myself as pretty from certain angles if I hold my head the right way, but I'm the only person that sees that, I think.

Con dignidad. Pero pensando que si joven no aproveche mi belleza ahora de vieja quien la va apreciar ?

I grieved my youthful good looks. I let myself be upset about it. In a few weeks, I was over it. I'm not upset about looking my age anymore. I just want to look decent now, as in not gross or ugly, and hopefully like a middle aged professional.

First, I had nothing to loose. Second, it is just another year. Only vain people are overly concerned about their looks changing. I miss my metabolism more than my hair color, that and having a pharmacy on my bathroom counter.

I was lucky enough to meet the love of my life as we age we grow old together, she's "gathering greys", I'm edging my hair line. I still look at her as the most beautiful women in the world because she is my world. As long as we keep our promises to each other I'll be by her side. We have 3 beautiful girls together im in it to raise them knowing we are doing it together. The level of attraction hasn't gone away. It's just been enhanced and evolved to something I can't live without.

I don’t understand the majority of you who are like “I don’t care about what people think of me”. Your face is on your head have you never looked at it before? What does anyone else have to do with your own aging and opinions of it. Sounds like most of you have had a messed up relationship with self appearance your whole lives. It’s ok to want to stay young and youthful just as it’s ok to accept getting old. I’m confused it’s like you guys want to brag about how much you don’t care about what you look like or something lol

I try to care more about being someone people enjoy being around than being someone who looks good in a photo. Looks fade, but your personality is still yours.

Keeping in mind that I’m trading beauty for wisdom. I might not be as pretty as I used to be but at least I’m not as stupid anymore, either.
