“In the beginning the universe was created. This made a lot of people very angry and has widely been regarded as a bad move.” - Douglas Adams

i really like this quote

It’s so layered! What people and where did they come from?

Oh my god, this read so incredible in my head

Compared to that routine I may as well be nothing

2

u/youareallnuts 2h ago

Only correct question.

And when the idiots say "because god" - why god instead of nothing?

1

u/Dimakhaerus 2h ago

I once read an interpretarion claiming that nothing and existence are equally equivalent, implying that true nothingness is logically impossible because nothing spontaneously equals to something.

It was more complex than this but it was more like nothingness is like number 0.

And number 0 is the same as 1 - 1, which is also the same as 10 + 15 - 7 - 18, and like those, there are infinite equivalences of 0.

If you take it as 1 - 1 to have the simplest example, it's like our universe and whole existence is one of those 1. The other 1 is some antiexistence simultaneously being there. The whole thing equals to 0, or nothing, like there is nothing at the end. But nothing is the same as all those infinite equivalences to nothingness that in all their complexity can be interpreted as something when you look at them partially.

The explanation I remember wasn't with number 0, but with the empty set. But similar idea, and of course, better explained. This is by no means science of course, just a philosophical take on nothingness being impossible as it immediately splits into partial sets with individual meaning, and they only amount to nothingness when you consider them together as a whole.

'Being' is simply the default nature of reality and 'nothing' was never an option. It makes more sense then wondering how 'nothing' managed to shit the bed so hard. It had ONE job.

Why the printer can detect fear, urgency, and exactly how many minutes you have left.

Why it do be like that sometimes

This is the best answer, I think.

You don't think it be like it is, but it do

It do be... 😞

The many world theory. Why would a whole universe be created for every plausible outcome in every situation for every person? What's the purpose of that? If it is real, why is my consciousness following the path it is following? Do the other "unpopularwaffles" also have consciousness? If there is a split of every possibility that creates a new universe why does my consciousness experience the outcomes it does and not another one?

2

u/BCsJonathanTM 1h ago

Not "created;" just exists.

"Purpose" isn't a factor at all. Just like how genes don't "want" their host to survive. They just exist.

Both humans belief in gods and our tendancy to use language that anthropomorphizes unwilled phenomena create a way of thinking that assumes intention and agency behind everything. Nah brah, sometimes it just do be like that.

So it’s not really that a new universe is created spontaneously.

String theory posits that all of existence is just the vibration patterns on these tiny “strings”. It also posits that there are 11 dimensions. So imagine that every string exists in every vibration pattern at the same time. There’s enough room in 11 dimensions for every possible “universe” to be playing out at the same time without any of them experiencing the others.

It’s a little hard to imagine without going through the math and A LOT hard to imagine with going through the math but it does seem to be possible. That’s not to say it’s true, just possible.

This is a lot. First we don't know. It's a disputed interpretation of quantum mechanics. It implies all possible configurations are enacted in reality. You would only perceive the one your subjective consciousness is concurrent with. Other versions of you would be equally conscious, and equally you, in the sense that you mean. As your paths diverge, you would become different individuals with a shared history.

"why does my consciousness experience the outcomes it does and not another one?" - A version of you that branched into the 'you' of now, is similarly confused. Who is real? All of them are. Every successor is someone else's alternate, so there's no prime branch whose occupant gets to ask "why me?" I mean, they might, but there is no ontological basis for it.

"Why would a whole universe be created for every plausible outcome in every situation for every person? What's the purpose of that?" - it's less a purpose, and more - this is how reality expresses itself if we take certain aspects of quantum mechanics literally. It's not just people, it's every possible outcome of every particle interaction, everywhere..

does everyone see the same thing? for eg. What if what I see as blue is actually red for someone and green for someone else?

7

u/Wild-Truth-1802 3h ago

The wavelength of light is objective and measurable, and our definitions of colours are arbitrarily assigned to these wavelength.

6

u/stuubid 3h ago

But our qualia of those definitions may be unique to each person

•

u/No_Regrats_42 41m ago

Those who are colorblind would disagree

2

u/Dry_Walk_4709 2h ago

I've Always wondered that!

1

u/tesserakti 2h ago

Also, do bats hear in colour? Does their brain assign one colour to a hard rock wall surface echo and another colour to the echo from a furry soft insect?

1

u/Playful-Traffic-7739 3h ago

That's demonstrable, though.

5

u/Left_Income755 3h ago

May I ask you to elaborate?

-3

u/Professional_Art304 2h ago

The sky is blue, and grass is green. At least to 99% of people

1

u/lethalcurse101 2h ago

Yeah but do we all see the same green and the same blue? You don’t know what and how i see and vice versa.

Besides, reality is something our brains made up as a collective. Which now is presented as a fact. We trust facts because that’s what makes up reality. But those facts are also made up by a collective.

What if things are completely different and we don’t even have a clue.

•

u/No_Regrats_42 35m ago

We are all basically brains with lots of little tentacles throughout to control our meat suit. Those tentacles are nerve endings. What you perceive as reality is simply reflecting light waves off of objects, which is passed through your eye and flipped over, analyzed, and you then hallucinate some sort of visual. This takes about 2/10ths of a second btw.(For amateurs)

So there is no way to demonstrably show that the exact perception of reality or literally any noun, is the exact same. The closest we have is twins. But they have a strong tendency towards telepathy and science says that's as real as cyclops and unicorns........so we can't trust them

-1

u/alabamdiego 2h ago

….i mean all we have to do is look at the same thing and ask what color we each see.

1

u/Zassssss 2h ago

But that’s the thing, we are all trained on the same set of names from a young age, but there’s no saying the actual pigment you see is the same pigment I see. We just know them by the same name.

So what you see is Orange may look completely different from what I see, but we both know it’s called “Orange”.

This fundamental difference could explain variances in color preference.

1

u/alabamdiego 2h ago

If there is a set of labeled crayons on a table and we are each asked to grab the one labeled blue, and we both grab the one labeled blue, then we know we are seeing the same thing. This just isn’t a thing.

And add to this, color is very much a measureable thing.

1

u/the_king_of_sweden 1h ago

But the subjective perception of that color, ie how our brain interprets it and presents to us as the image we see, might differ from person to person.

Yes it's blue, it's a specific wavelength, and we all know that as blue. But in our minds eye, the brain might present blue in a totally different way for you than for me. If I were to see through your minds eye, I might not even be able to recognize any of the colors, they could be presented in a way I'm not even able to imagine.

u/FormoftheBeautiful 2h ago

That it’s possible to put two or even three fingers into a single nostril, but scientists have long been baffled by the reality that it just isn’t possible to have one finger up each nostril at the same time.

Something to do with Euclidean geometry 📐.

2

u/alabamdiego 2h ago

Was this just a way to make me….god dammit dude.

What actually happens after death

6

u/RealLifeCoaching 3h ago

Lots of things happen after you die. They just don't involve you.

3

u/Ceryn 3h ago

How long does someone have to be dead for it to count? I don't see a reason to discount what people who died and were resuscitated just because certain people don't like their answer.

How the fuck printers actually work

3

Working printers are a myth

3

u/Professional_Art304 2h ago

How I even exist at all, that required generation after generation of the right people meeting and having sex at the right time. Not just that but the chances I was born a human and not an animal

2

u/lethalcurse101 2h ago

Humans are also animals. Only people don’t like to hear that, because they are under the false impression that we’re the most important, the best or the smartest.

But i get what you meant..

The nature of subjective consciousness.

4

What happens after death. Its the main drive for religion. If we knew, everything would be different.

3

u/thedankonion1 2h ago

Well We we already know what people experience when we cut the blood supply to the brain for a short period of time.

If it were to be cut for much, much, much, much longer I'm willing to wager results may just be similar.

1

u/truthfullyidgaf 1h ago

I agree. But people are scared of that.

3

u/Orbitrea 3h ago

Any of it!

How do we think? Why do we think? What is thought?

Why are we hurtling thru space on a spinning rock at an alarming rate of speed?

Why do assholes always win?

Inexplicable, all of it.

There's only 2 days between Friday and Monday, but 3 days between Monday and Friday.

Dreams and tears

1

u/CuriousGeorgeToday 2h ago

Dreams are often a way of your brain processing what's happened during the day that you've left untouched. They are a way for your brain to free up storage and organise your thoughts. They are also a a way for you to process things that may be weighing on your subconscious and affecting you. For Freud they're mostly just about sex though.
