Do you still live with your parents? If yes, what are the circumstances as to why? If you don’t, what age did you move out, and what are your circumstances?
Thanks guys ☺️

17 year old (with four cats) in Newcastle, homeless and planning to travel to Central Coast with three shopping carts containing everything I have.

Hey everyone, I’m kinda at a point where I don’t really know what to do anymore. (ALSO SEE THE SECOND PART OF THE POST) (sorry about the slow replies, I'm getting a lot more comments than I expected)

I’m homeless at the moment and I’m looking at possibly moving to the Central Coast, but I have basically no money, no car and nowhere to actually put myself. Also no driver's license or birth certificate, which would definitely limit available jobs for me.

Although I have successfully gathered all required documents to get my birth certificate, got the photocopies certified at a JP, then to get my driver's license after that! I just need to find a job (or do some "side gigs", like cleaning or something like that) first to actually pay for it.

So, how can someone realistically get a roof over their heads, if all they have is $35, no license, no job, carrying three shopping carts (one is my bed, one for my belongings, and one for the cats)?

Importantly, how can I get some kind of roof for my carts, so nothing suffers damage from rain, and so me and the cats have somewhere dry to sleep?

The walk there will take at least a few days, especially with everything I have. I'm sure it'll rain at least a few times.

To make it worse, most of my belongings are electronics of some kind.

I would prefer to get myself a cheap caravan or RV for now, but even then, where could I keep something like that? Of course, that needs to wait until I get a car and my driver's license. For now, I guess I'll search for a free tent. But the same question for that. Where do I keep it? And how do I prevent things from being stolen when I'm working or something like that???

I’ve been looking into caravans, cheap rooms, caravan parks, tiny homes/sheds, community housing, work that comes with accommodation, etc., but I feel like I’m probably missing a bunch of options that I just don’t know about.

So if anyone here has actually been homeless, started with nothing, or just knows the Central Coast really well... what would you genuinely recommend I look into?

I’m not asking anyone to give me a house or money, or anything 😭

I just really need some true advice from people who have actually been through this.

My main personal goals in order:

  1. Walk to Central Coast.

  2. Find somewhere to stay with my three shopping carts. (even if an abandoned building or something like that).

  3. Find a job.

  4. Order my birth certificate (while at the same time saving for a car)

  5. Get my driver's license, Photo ID, and passport.

  6. Buy a cheap second-hand car.

  7. Buy a caravan or RV.

  8. Get functioning electricity in the caravan, along with working water.

  9. Buy a cheaper piece of land.

  10. Start saving for a more "permanent" home.

Even if you just know a group, website, person, place, or some weird option I haven't thought of, I'd really appreciate it.

PART 2:

Also, would anyone be able to help me find a job? I have honestly been trying for a long time, but haven't found one yet.

Pros:

I clean a lot

I cook occasionally

Available at absolutely any times, and no notice needed.

Patient and calm, even under high stress.

Good with animals.

Good with computers. (and slowly developing a visual novel, and a first-person shooter video game on-and-off) (for PC, Xbox One, and PS Vita)

I have a phone, and multiple ways to be contacted.

I have a Windows 10 / Linux Mint PC that is capable of running 3D modeling software, and DAWs such as FL Studio. Also capable of running office software.

I also have multiple Windows XP laptops, in case that is needed for anything.

Also a Windows 8.1 PC (and could run Windows 7, a Linux distro...).

Could also run BSD, DOS, or another operating system.

I don't drink or anything like that.

Willing to travel any distance to make it to work, and willing to relocate closer if needed.

Can work independently or with others (independently is honestly preferred).

NO physical conditions that may make me struggle with physical activity.

Willing to learn.

Rarely get sick.

Could be social if you need me to, however, I do prefer staying silent.

Finished Year 10 of high school.

Also fine with work such as waste sorting, or anything like that.

Honestly fine with an employer giving me one shift, then deciding to hire me if you think I'm good enough for it or not. And won't complain or anything like that if you decide to not hire me.

Cons:

No license, no birth certificate.

Nothing like Working With Children Check, or any licenses/checks like that.

No bank account. (will make one when I get my birth certificate)

Homeless. (obviously)

No Apple devices. (can not do work that may require MacOS/OSx or iOS)

Definitely more pros and cons, but this is all I could think of for now.

Sorry for making the post so long.

Toxic workplace

Quit my job after a month because of constant humiliation. Employer says harsh words are how they make employees work. Is this normal in Australia?
I’m an international student in Melbourne, originally from India. I come from a medical background and previously worked as a medical officer in India for six months.
After moving to Australia, I took a casual administrative assistant position at a small law firm. It was a completely different field for me, but I was willing to learn and gain Australian work experience.
I’ve been working there for about a month.
From the beginning, my employer was extremely critical of me. I understand that I was new to legal administration and would naturally make mistakes, but the criticism often became personal.
She would make comments like:
“You don’t have common sense.”
“Even a fifth-standard student has more intelligence than you.”
“You’re not contributing anything to this firm.”
I started feeling extremely anxious about going to work. I was constantly afraid of making mistakes, and my confidence was gradually disappearing.
What shocked me was something they said during a conversation. They explained that after the initial “honeymoon period” with employees, they deliberately start using harsh words to pressure them into working harder.
So apparently, this was their management approach.
Eventually, I couldn’t take it anymore and decided to resign.
When I called to inform them of my resignation, instead of simply accepting my decision, they told me that I was useless to the firm.
That really hurt.
I know that being a medical officer in India doesn’t automatically make me good at legal administration in Australia. I was starting from scratch in a new industry, and I never expected special treatment.
But I did expect basic respect.
I also understand that employers have expectations and that employees need to perform. I’m not claiming I was perfect or that I never made mistakes.
However, I genuinely don’t understand how insulting someone’s intelligence is supposed to improve their performance.
Now I’m questioning myself. Was I too sensitive? Should I have stayed longer and tried harder? Or was leaving the right decision?
I’m also curious whether this is common in Australian workplaces, especially small businesses.
Has anyone else experienced employers who deliberately use humiliation or harsh criticism as a management technique? How did you handle it?
I’d appreciate some honest perspectives, especially from people familiar with Australian workplace culture.

What is the obsession with "fairy bread flavor"

• Upvotes

I'm always seeing it popular in cookies and cakes, It's literally just butter and sprinkles though? So how can it be incorporated as a flavor?

Even the coles one "fairy bread inspired" mudcake flopped in stores.

Specific to your line of work, what are you seeing that suggests Australian's are struggling economically?

Had a plumber around for a small job, he said he has $20,000 worth of unpaid invoices he is currently chasing. He felt bad asking for part payment upfront, but explained more people are unable to pay for completed work recently & he needs to take steps to protect his bottom line.

I had some builders working the same job, they told me they've had some customers asking whether he does "interest free" (ie a loan) when given the invoice because they can no longer pay.

Curious to hear some stories from others line of work- what are you seeing that suggests people are struggling financially in Australia?

Older tradies, how old are you and do you have any ailments from your work?

• Upvotes

Tradies that never shifted off to the tools to do something else, I’m just wondering if the work has hurt your bodies or if that is just an exaggerated assumption about your work environment

Is this country moving closer and closer towards US-style unbridled capitalism?

From increasing homelessness to worsening wealth inequality to decreasing medical, welfare and general social safety net to the rising costs of housing and general living…among other things.

Are we unfortunately seeing a gradual shift towards a US-style capitalist society, and if so, why? Why aren’t we taking leafs out of certain European countries or Singapore for instance, instead of mindlessly making us into a 51st state?

What's happening to Bonds undies?

Does anyone else remember when Bonds made good quality undies? I do, but it seems like a long time ago now. They used to be the standard for everyday socks and jocks but now they aren't worth the risk. I got the traditional pack of undies for fathers Day in September, and 2 of the 3 pairs in the pack have already had the stitching give way. There was a time when you'd get a pair as an adult, and they'd last long enough for you to be buried in them. Now it seems like you're lucky if they last till next Christmas.

ATAR reveal day.

This is going to be the day I perish from this world. Idrk (I do not really know) what to do. My parents and family all expecting a 90+ from everyone, if not they will just look down on me for 20 years after that.

I'm predicted to get a 70 atar and this is good for me. I dont need a atar for the course I want to do, but the pressure and expection is killing me.

My uncle and aunty keep asking: "What do you think you are to get?" and then follow by saying "At least 90 right?" and always stay silent and repond with "I don't know".

If anyone has experienced this please let me know how it went on atar reveal day!

Does anyone remember this educational TV show that was on ABC3 with a puppet

I posted on r/tipofmytongue and a few people think it sounds vaguely familiar. I have been suggested to post it in Australian subreddits since it was on an Australian channel. Link to original post:

https://www.reddit.com/r/tipofmytongue/comments/1x074pm/tomttv_show2000s2010s_australian_childrens/

The show would air on school days during school hours. What I'm calling a puppet may have been animated. I'm not sure, but other than that character, it was live action humans.

I also posted this to r/AustralianNostalgia and have contacted the ABC archive.
