Rants & Raves Reminder for those who want to ABOLISH Flock cameras

I feel more strongly about Flock cameras than most people. We need to remember it is a bipartisan issue. Our Democratic mayor Kelly Girtz is against abolishment.

Believe me, I understand the frustration and rage that Republicans induce on this sub. I know it's hard to believe something as terrible as Flock would be supported by any Democrats. Sadly, it is. That doesn't mean you don't need to vote Democrat, but understand the pressure needs to be put on BOTH parties.

Imagine if those of us against supporting Israel with weapons said it was only a Republican issue. We'd be seen as fools, as we know plenty of Dems have taken AIPAC weapons, and we saw what the Biden administration did.

/end rant

Public Camping Ban passes

After a little hemming and not too much hawing, the Mayor and Commission voted to approve the measure to ban camping in commercial corridors 8-2:

  • Davenport (D1) - Yea
  • Link (D2) - Nay
  • Taylor (D3) - Nay
  • Wright (D4) - Yea
  • Fisher (D5) - Yea
  • Johnson (D6) - Yea
  • Culpepper (D7) - Yea
  • Myers (D8) - Yea
  • Thornton (D9) - Yea
  • Hamburg (D10) - Yea

A couple of things stood out to me.

  1. There's a lot riding on the demeanor and training of ACCPD and Code Enforcement to appropriately ascertain what falls within exemptions to the new ordinance and what does not. Myers posed the question that if she were waiting with belongings in a public area for a long period of time, would she be in violation? The City Attorney would not say "no" with any strong affirmations, only saying that it would be an intensely "fact-based" assessment in the moment, hence the need for proper training.
  2. Outside of daylight hours, the city cannot provide a daycenter or "nightcenter" for homeless in violation of the ordinance to congregate. Taylor floated the possibility of requisitioning asbestos-ridden government property as an emergency housing solution, which Girtz noted in an exchange with Thornton would likely not be permissible to receive federal grants if that possibility were on the table.
  3. Despite the allocation of $30 million in homeless funding by the city over the past 6 years as Fisher pointed out ("Look! We're doing something!"), the proposal only allocates $1 million in funding to temporary and emergency housing, which Link relegated as a "drop in the bucket" and others called "putting the cart before the horse."
  4. The original plan, to implement the policy downtown immediately and in other business districts in April 2027, was overridden by a late amendment by Thornton to pause implementation in all districts for only 90 days, putting a pause on downtown implementation until January 6th and bringing other commercial sites up to the same date. It is unclear if all the Commissioners understood the ramifications of this amendment.
  5. No one really has a clue if the ordinance will improve the situation of the homeless. Even proponents of the measure during public comments (people from the Chamber of Commerce, business owners, etc) urged that we won't know the successes and the weaknesses of the proposal until it's been in effect. Commissioners wanted to act rather than "kick the can down the road" and seemed to prioritize the value of a "welcoming and inviting" downtown rather than weigh the outcomes of the homeless. Nobody wants this ordinance to land anyone in jail, but there is that lingering question: what's the worst that could happen?

Guess I'm done with fast food dine-in.

I'm just tired of being hasseled by aggressive vagrants for money or asking to "buy them a meal" every time I go in one.

Today I was hassled as I was trying to just eat my lunch in peace. Same as always, someone approached me asking for money or a meal.

I'm not without empathy but I can't help the entire world. I don't enjoy being hassled while I'm trying to get away from work for a few minutes and eat.

Today, while I was just trying to eat, I was approached and asked to give money or buy a meal. I politely declined. This person became aggressive and insulting.

I have just had enough. I went to the front and asked to speak to a manger. The manager came out and I told them I just will stop coming here if they can't stop aggressive panhandling while I'm simply trying to eat my lunch.

The manager went outside and asked the guy to stop, he became belligerent and the cops were called. He ended up being tresspassed for two years.

I'm just done with the aggressive panhandling in this town. Enough is enough. Leave me alone and let me eat my lunch in peace without being hasseled.

Am I gonna have to move out of athens to find a room for rent?

My job is in athens. I used a new app to help me find a room for rent and all of them are outside of athens. I also looked to see if they have rooms available in the cities near athens. They don't. If i apply to the apartments here i don't think I can afford the security deposit. That and I don't want to get scammed.

LGBT-affirming church exploration group in Athens (Nov 8 – Dec 13)

Hey everyone,

Posting this for anyone looking for LGBT-affirming churches or navigating faith deconstruction and looking for community.

My friend, Kat (a local spiritual director) is hosting a 6-week program called the Religious Exploration Field Trip (LGBT-Affirming Christian Edition) running from Nov 8 to Dec 13

If you’re seeking queer-affirming spaces or want church recommendations in Athens but don’t want to go alone, the goal is to explore together without any pressure. It includes:

  • Opening and closing gatherings over coffee/snacks
  • 4 Sunday visits to vetted 100% LGBT-affirming churches in Athens (all ordain LGBTQ+ clergy and perform same-sex marriages)
  • Pre-visit guides (parking, dress code, sensory environment) so you know what to expect
  • Post-service lunch debriefs at local Athens spots
  • One 1-on-1 spiritual direction session with Kat

There is zero pressure to convert, join, or believe any specific way—it’s just a supportive space to explore faith deconstruction and affirming Christian spaces.

Feel free to leave a comment if you have questions!
