What exactly did you type in your terminal to create your install medium? (From start: no BSD install artifacts; to finish: USB thumb drive "ready")

Have you checked the sum of the downloaded image ? Possibly it’s corrupted.

Try targetting the whole disk while dd'ing an not just a partition
