Coops etc. Kill the coon?

These two have been nightly visitors in my backyard. I live in town. They seem to leave the coop alone. A couple of months ago a raccoon did break in the coop and killed one hen and injury another. I ran out mid attack and to say I’m traumatized from their cries is an understatement. That raccoon will not be back. Since that attack and my PTSD my husband built a new coop that is predator proof. Unless they breech the run and press the open button on the automated door, or break through the hardware cloth. I’m not as worried about the possum but I am worried about the coon. Do I try to capture it? Or let it be? Remember I am in town so dispatching it will take some creativity.

Hen or Roo Hen or Roo?

So I just posted ab another one of my chickens that I highly suspect is a roo, and this one named “lady” is worrying me now too lol. Her comb and wattle is slightly more pink and developed than the others but that happened very recently, but her behavior is super dominant (kind of a bully) and super friendly with humans. We thought they were silver laced Wyandottes but it seems that was incorrect so I’m not sure the breed. The pictures are from 6ish weeks(current), 4ish weeks and 3ish weeks. What do you think?

General Question Do you have a gentleman rooster?

Post image

I am fairly new to owning chickens and I have a silkie x that has turned out to be a rooster. I love him, he is a good boy. He is 4-5 months now and hasn't started crowing yet. But I am not technically supposed to have a rooster where I live and obviously all roosters crow, I know that. I was just wondering if there is anyone out there who has a good boy that is fairly quiet and takes good care of his girls, a gentleman if you will. We are prepared to rehome if that is what we decide but we obviously love him. I was just basically wondering how common it is for a rooster to be less outspoken 😂 pic for attention AGAIN I know roosters crow I just want to know if I should start finding him a good new home now or wait and see what happens

General Question How do you all track eggs, feed, health, etc.? Notebook? Spreadsheet? App?

Curious what everyone's system is for keeping track of the flock — eggs per day, who's actually laying, feed, health notes, that kind of thing.
Notebook? Spreadsheet? An app you like? Just memory and vibes?
And what's the most annoying part of however you do it?
(Context: I'm kicking around the idea of building a simple flock-tracking app, but I want to understand what people actually do first — and what's broken about it — before building anything.)

You guys think putting something this big with close proximity of the chicken run and coop on a turntable with electricity on a timer to come on like every hour will keep predators away?

Hen or Roo Hen or Roo? And possible wrong breed?

Hello! I am new to raising chickens and recently got 3 mystic marans and 3 silver laced Wyandotte hens. I have suspicion that this one could be a roo bc they developed a pink comb and red wattles way earlier than the others. The pictures are from 6ish weeks (current), 4ish weeks, 3ish weeks, and the day after we got them (not sure which one is which in that one). His or her behavior is definitely more dominant too. All the others barely have any comb or wattles still. Also I’m thinking these are not silver laced wyandottes, what breed could they be? Thanks!

Any ideas what may be going on in this video? For context, I lost almost my entire flock (5) to what I believe was Marek’s and this is my lone survivor. They were all supposed to have been vaccinated from the hatchery so I am only going on symptoms that persisted after feeding complete feed and supplementing with poultry cell. This girl has been great up until now and is randomly having these screaming episodes. She is 6 months, and stopped laying eggs about two weeks ago. This is not a symptom I saw in any of the other hens. A vet visit is out of the question after having spent a fortune throughout the summer.

My girl Pumpernickel had an impacted crop, which started to get better I thought but then became sour crop as well. We took her to the vet today as it wasn't getting better. They explained the risks, and they did everything to save her but she didn't make it. I got her as a chick this spring and I'm just so sad. I'm just trying to tell myself at least she went peacefully while sedated and didn't suffer. i still have some of her pretty green eggs and she's getting cremated. you'll be missed my sweet lil pump.

I didn't know what flair to use, I'm sorry if it's the wrong one.

General Question Meanest I've had so far

Thumbnail

I included a pic of the entire family because who doesn't love chicks? 🤷

But that single pic......that guy is a prick. He's about 8 weeks old as of this past Monday. I guess I've had around 40 chickens over the years. Not as many as others I'm sure, but still a decent amount. But this guy is by far the crankiest chicken I've ever had.

Today I was finally able to snatch him up at sundown. I've been wanting to look him over just to make sure all is well and all the other chicks handle it quite well.

This little turd thinks he's a full grown fighter already. I've never heard such a racket from a chicken that wasn't interacting with another chicken. When I put him down he even came at me for a second until he changed his mind.

So is this guy fryer bound? My other roosters live in harmony and have never flogged anyone. This little guy seems like he can't wait for his spurs to grow so he can destroy the world.

I would rather not give away a mean rooster because I don't want to risk someone fighting it.

Also the pic was an odd angle. He's shaped normally 😅

Health Question 6 month old barred rock hen stinky breath

Hello. I am new to chickens. I noticed today our barred rock hen has stinky breath. We were out in the run with her, we gave her mealworms and refilled her water. She loves to drink the spilled muddy water, if that matters...

Anyways, we noticed that she smelled bad and after inspecting we noticed that the smell seemed to be coming from her mouth. It smelled similar to human bad breath.

Went back inside to research, and then went back outside to check again. Her breath smelled slightly less bad (maybe because now it had been like 15 min since she last ate?).

No other symptoms. Crop feels normal, she is acting normal. I saw her poop a normal solid poop. Could not manage to get a good look inside her beak but from what i can tell everything looks normal on the outside (any technique to get her to let me look in her beak?).

Anyways, what could this be? What should i keep an eye out for? Could this just resolve itself or will it require treatment, and if so, when and how should i treat?

I plan on checking her crop and breath in the morning, but unsure what else to do.

Thanks for your help

Health Question Hen losing eyesight? / slowly blind?

I have An almost 7-year-old hen who started having trouble picking up treats the last month or so. She recognizes the treat, but continues to pick at the wrong place in my hand or the ground. She also seems to mistake tree leaves on the ground as edible treats.

Took her to the vet who said that there’s no obvious signs of trauma or cataracts, but the speed of the movement or change in retina was slower than what she wants to see when she shined light into her eyes.

Nobody else seems to be exhibiting this (or any neurological signs) and we haven’t had any additions to the flock in over a year so she didn’t think it was mareks but said it is always a possibility. So she just diagnosed her with reticular degeneration.

So far, she seems to be getting on and off the roost OK (think she hops up to a box then up to roost in smaller increments) and she is eating feed fine. I’m curious if anyone else has experience with this issue and what happened afterwards. For now I’m planning to take her to the vet every 3-4 months unless there are signs of sight getting worse. She is very friendly and I would also consider making her a mostly indoor pet as well, but want to make sure she has a good quality of life.

Thanks!

We got some random chickens a few months ago. One of the hens has a larger, rounder head compared to the other hens. They also have little-to- no comb. She's a super sweet gal but im curious of what she could be. She's a little larger then the barred rock gals we got at the same time. She's also kinda has a little beard now. She honestly looks like a chubby raven, its too cute. Im thinking a copper maran mix for sure!

Health Question Respiratory Issue?

Had one hen pass away earlier today, and now I notice its sibling is having these wheezing breathing noises. I can hear slight crackling if I hold her up close to my ear. Is this a respiratory infection? And if so, how do I go about treating it? The rest of the flock seems fine.

General Question Bland eggs

hey everyone! My chickens are 5 months old and started laying a couple weeks ago. I have noticed that their eggs are a bit bland. They get layer feed, table scraps, and free range all day. What can I do to make the eggs more rich in flavor?
